Arik,

I'm on a Mac. Downloaded/extracted your Ad Logic materials. Can't open your Prezi file. Suggestions?

Did you unzip or "extract" the files in the zip folder? Without unzipping, you'll be able to see PDFs and other files in the folder, but the prezi file won't run.

If all else fails, you could always view the prezi online:

Hope that helps,

This is such a well done lesson, I am just having one small issue. I cannot get the prezi to work. I am working from a Mac and downloaded the prezi application. Is there another way to get the file to open?

Thank you for your time.

As long as you have unzipped the file folder, it should play. This non-editable version of prezi shouldn't need the prezi application downloaded, but it does need Flash Player installed and up to date as the file is actually a Flash file.

Hopefully that helps.

Your products have been a lifesaver for me this year.....my first as a 7th and 8th gr. Language Arts teacher, after 10+ years in 3rd grade! I used the Ad Logic and Trial of Spongebob units for my 2 evaluation observations and they were well received by both my students and my principal. The Ender's Game and Anne Frank: In Her Own Words units were great additions to the reading of those books and I had colleagues and parents tell me how much they gained, themselves, from the MLK Disecting the Dream unit. The icing on the cake, though, is the 10-Minute Grammar unit. I bought the whole bundle and am sooooo glad I did! I hate boring text books, so I was thrilled with this product. I'm writing to beg you to do units on verb mood, adverb and adjective phrases, em dash and en dash, and ellipsis. If you would, my entire Common Core Language standards will be covered! Thanks for your consideration. ~ Pam

Great suggestion. Considering that you're not the first to suggest this, I think it definitely shows an area of need in the Ten-Minute Grammar curriculum.

I'll look it over and see what I can come up with.

Thanks so much for your support of my products!

In the meantime, check out the "Using Quotations" unit. It includes a fair amount of practice with ellipses.

That's a great idea! I've never thought to use it that way, but I think it would be a great intro activity. I could be cool to start with the quote analysis group activity before reading and then come back to it after reading to do the final analysis essay--good way to bookend the whole unit.

Thanks for the suggestion!

How do you feel about using this in 6th grade?

I think a lot of this is review for 8th graders. There might be a couple of units that are a bit tough for that age group, but I think 6th graders could handle it. My daughter is in 2nd grade, and her amazing teacher is introducing them to some grammar concepts that some of my 8th graders have struggled with in the past--she's proving that kids are often ready to understand these things a lot earlier than we think they are.

Thanks for the question!

Hi Arik,

I purchased your Trimester One resource for grammar and it has been one of the most valuable tools in my middle school teaching experience. I am interested in purchasing Trimester Two and Three, but wanted to see if it would still be possible to get the $45 bundle and to take into account the $20 I already used for the Trimester One. If there is a way to discount the cost so that my total payment is equivalent to the bundle of three, I would really appreciate it. Thanks for your help!

Arik Durfee  (TpT Seller)
I really wish I could do that, but TpT doesn't offer that kind of customized pricing as an option.

But now that you mention it, you're not the first person who has had this question. I might consider releasing a new bundle product that comes with Trimester Two and Three together so you can get the other two without re-purchasing Trimester One.

Let me think about that for a day, and I'll get back to you.

UPDATE:
Okay. I went ahead and created a new bundle download that only contains Trimester Two and Three and should save you a few bucks. Hope that helps. And thank you!

Hi Arik,

Just wanted to say thanks for the Creating A Dystopia product. We're beginning a dystopian novel study next week, and your prezi/activities were truly helpful in getting my students' minds wrapped around the concept. Lots of fun!

A question: I've just begun using prezi and want to add some to my TPT store. How did you manage to put the presentations directly into a downloadable form? I thought you can only save them online and find them through web links. How did you turn them into files that can be kept on a computer/not online?
March 12, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
n/a
Arik Durfee  (TpT Seller)
Great question! When you're looking at the main page for a particular prezi presentation, you'll see some options: Edit, Present remotely, Download, etc.

Click on the "Download" tab and download it for "Presenting," not for "Editing and Presenting." It will send you a zip folder with the prezi file along with a couple of extra folders with files necessary to play the prezi. In your product, you have to make sure you keep the prezi file in the same location as the extra folders or else the presentation won't work. You also have to remind buyers that they'll need to unzip your product folder in order to get the presentation to work correctly (I've had some customers have problems with that, but it has usually been pretty easy to resolve."

Good luck!

Hi Arik. This, like all of your products, looks excellent. I'm having a slight issue, though (and it's possible that it's a computer issue on my end that you won't be able to help me with). I built a vocab review game in the Chuck Norris template using my Mac, and none of the audio seems to be working when I attempted to open the game on my school-issued PC. Has anyone else ever experienced difficulty with the sound not working properly? If so, do you have any suggestions? Thanks so much for all your products!

Arik Durfee  (TpT Seller)
It could be several things, but here's one possibility. When you customized the game and re-saved it, did you save it in the same folder? The sound effects and music in PowerPoint presentations are just links to external files, so those sound files have to be in the same folder as the PPT file. Check that--if that's all it is, then it's an easy fix. If that isn't the issue, send me an email at arikdurfee58@yahoo.com and I'll see what I can do to help you.

I just downloaded it and checked through it, and it seems to be working alright.

One thing that might help is that you always need to "Unzip" the download folder before opening the Prezi file. To do that, you just need to right-click on the zipped folder, and then click "Extract All." You don't need any third party software for this.

Hopefully that helps.

I am very interested in your products! These look so fun and engaging and I can't wait to use them with my kids! I have a question, because I don't want to accidentally buy something that is already part of larger bundle or something like that (which I've done often enough now, that I have learned to ask first) is this part of any of your larger products? For example, is this part of the 10 Minute series or just based off of it? Is this part of your full year Daily Word series?

Thank you!

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you--you've probably discovered the answer already. My Wordplay products aren't typically bundled with the Ten-Minute Grammar series. It's based off of that series, but the Wordplay products are meant to be used separately, so they're not packaged together.

Just bought the first Trimester of TMG. Just curious, how do you spend the rest of your class time after doing your grammar activities? I only teach Language Arts (no reading) and am looking for the best way to balance grammar and writing.

Arik Durfee  (TpT Seller)
That's an interesting question. I've never taught Language Arts (separate from reading and literature). But in general, when I was teaching 8th grade and using TMG (I've since moved to high school grades), I usually had a project or unit going on at all times. That might have been a research writing unit, a literature study, a mock trial, a presentation, or some other kind of project. So I would spend 10 minutes a day on grammar, and then the other 40 or so minutes would be continuing an ongoing project or unit.

Your "DAILY WORDPLAY" bell ringer contains 3 Rhyme Thyme puzzles asking students to "think like a rapper." The words to rhyme are "ARREST," "BLACK," and "DEAD." Has no one ever mentioned to you that this is offensive and insensitive? I would NEVER present these to my students.
January 22, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
n/a
Arik Durfee  (TpT Seller)
I am very sad that you interpreted it in that way. I chose words that could be rhymed with (because some words can't, obviously) and paid no attention to possible political meanings of the words, because I don't think in that way. You chose three of the thirty-six possible words to rhyme and because of them assumed I have some kind of racist agenda. You're ignoring words like "friend," "song," "game," "zap," and "dream," all of which clearly don't support the offensive message you assume I'm trying to give. They are simply random words.

When I see the word "black," my initial thought is of a color not a person (you'll notice that the words "green" and "blue" were also included). I disagree with your assumption that rappers are all black (and I think Eminem would disagree, too). And "arrest" and "dead" are not words I associate with rappers or black people (I would be fairly disgusted with a person who DOES associate such words with a particular race); they are simply words that have an ending that makes them rhyme-able.

If I was insensitive here, it was purely by accident and coincidence, and I feel terrible for not noticing how such words could be taken in the wrong way. Now that you've pointed this out to me, I will consider changing those things so that no one else misinterprets it in this way. But I think (as a society in general) we should be careful about taking offense where none was intended. That just creates tension where there was never any need for it.

It could be several things. I've been very frustrated with the newer versions of PowerPoint. I created these games on Office 2007, and they always ran perfectly. 2010 and 2013 introduced a few weird glitches.

But one thing you could check is to make sure that the sound effect and music files are in the same folder as the PPT file. In PowerPoint, sound files like this aren't embedded--they are just links to external files. So you have to keep them in the same file folder or PowerPoint can't find them.

I hope that helps a little. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi, I downloaded your product, and it's great, but I'm a little confused about the bonus round part. There is a sentence and then it says "Guilty" or "Not Guilty." It's not clear to me why some sentences are deemed one way or the other. None of them appear to have errors in them, so I'm not sure what the question is really asking. Thanks!

The bonus round is just for fun. In some of my other games it's something as dumb as "The first person to make a sound like a donkey gets a point." So in this game, the bonus round just asks you to guess whether the person in the scenario is guilty or not guilty. It's totally random and is just intended as a fun little pause in the actual game.

What it comes down to is that the bonus rounds in my games are based entirely on my weirdly random sense of fun and humor.

Hopefully that makes sense.

Thanks for downloading!

I disabled the ability to click from one slide to the next in presentation mode so that you don't accidentally change slides in the middle of bell-work and show them the next day's assignment.

It should work through navigation buttons. On the first page, you click on the "Day One" button, and it takes you to that activity. From that activity, you can click on the "Ten-Minute Revision" logo button, and it takes you back to the menu page.

If that's not working, let me know which unit you downloaded. If there is a problem in the PowerPoint file, I'll get it fixed immediately.

I don't know why, but apparently unzipping a compressed folder is much more difficult on a Mac than it is on a PC. I'm sure that's what the problem is--you need to unzip the folder to be able to play the prezi file.

One way around that is to use the online version of the presentation. Here is a link:

Certainly interested, but I have a few questions. Are there lessons for L8.2a-c ellipsis and dash, L8.3a conditional and subjunctive mood, and L8.5a-c verbal irony, puns, denotations specifically?

I can't remember if I listed those specific standards. If I did, I probably need to remove them because I don't think those concepts are covered. I think ellipses are covered in the "Using Quotations" unit, but I don't specifically cover the other concepts you listed.

Thanks for the question.

I just downloaded it. It looks like you have everything you need. The STUDENT file is just mislabeled "Teacher's Guide." But the rest of the student file is all correct.

I'll get that fixed and re-post it. But for the time being, you can still use that student file and all of the daily activities should still be correct.

Are these files Adobe pdf or Word? I would need a Word version to alter them to English English (spelling etc). Sorry - hope that makes sense. Thanks, M Bone

They come in both Word and PDF files. It also comes with a few font files you would have to install, but then you'll be able to edit them all you want.

I downloaded your Raven lesson plan and the power points were all jumbled up. One poem or example was laid on top of another one. A lot of the formatting was messed up as well. What do you recommend I do. I'm using the most recent version of pptx.

Did you install the font file that came with the download? You'll need to do that for the formatting. Just double click on the ont file to open it and then click "install."

As for things being stacked on top of one another, if ou play the presentation, the poems come up one at a time.

If that doesn't work, let me know and we'll get the problem fixed.

Unfortunately, I can't provide the full text for The Landlady as it is still under copyright. There are, however, several places you can find it on the internet if you don't have it in a literature text book (it's a common one in many Jr. High and High School lit books). Just do a google search for "Roald Dahl Landlady Full Text" and you will be able to find a good one.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi Arik,

Thanks for your timely reply. Strangely enough, it was the Teacherspayteachers website that suggested I install 7-zip and provided the link. Perhaps that should be changed if it's causing problems.

I agree. I'll try to contact the TpT team and try to convince them not to steer people toward unzipping programs since both Windows and Mac can do it on their own.

I strongly advise AGAINST installing any unzipping software like 7-zip. In my experience, they don't work and they often cause huge problems for your computer.

If you are using a Windows system, you shouldn't need any outside software for this. Just right-click on the zipped folder and select "Extract all." If that isn't working, it is probably BECAUSE of the 7-zip software. Uninstall that and delete it from your system and then try it again.

Hi there,
I tried using your Shoot Out review game. I loved the concept and so did my kids. However, I had some problems with it that made it difficult to play . Please help!
1) The Stars for the used questions weren't disappearing.
2.) The links for the 6 different sections didn't seem to be working correctly.
Thank you!

The stars not disappearing is a problem with the current version of PowerPoint. Unfortunately, I don't think I can fix that--I just have to wait on Microsoft to get the issue resolved.

As for the links not working, that's very strange. I've never had anyone have that problem before. You could try downloading the product from TpT again (you can re-download something as many times as you want); I wonder if the links were accidentally changed at some point.

If that doesn't work, contact me at arikdurfee58@yahoo.com and I'll try to give you whatever IT help you need.

Thanks,

Hello Arik,
I LOVE your TMG series. I am now interested in your TMR series. I just downloaded the first unit and I'm looking forward to implementing it. I noticed on an earlier response that you said you would make a video of you using TMR with your class. Did you make and share that video? I'd love to see you actually teaching the program. Thank you and I look forward to more great things from you! :)

Arik, I'm a BIG fan of your resources. I'm wondering if you have developed anything to help students with Common Core's narrative writing standard. My 8th grade students really enjoyed your Blown Up Essay activity; you wouldn't have anything like that available to teach narrative writing, would you?

Not currently. Last year in our class we did a "Nuclear Short Stories Competition" in our physical science / English combo class. It was a great narrative writing project and the kids ate it up. I'm planning on developing that one as a project. So hopefully I'll have it available sometime soon.

Joshua C. re: Paragraph Structure - Ten-Minute Revision Unit #1
Hi there. My class just completed the TMR unit on paragraph structure, and it's been a total success. I can't say enough good things about it. Writing instruction in short bursts every day seems to be much more valuable (and tolerable, for students) than doing a long, intensive writing unit once a semester. I've downloaded all 4 units, and we've just started the Word Choice unit this week. Are there more units in the works? If so, I can't wait to see them. Thanks for this excellent product!

I do have more in the works. I started on the next unit--focused on sentence fluency and variety--right before school started. But since the new school year started, I've been too swamped to work on it. I am using the TMR units in my class as well, though, so I'll need to get to it pretty soon or I'll run out of units for my class. So others are definitely in the works.

I have 20 total units planned out currently, which I think is more than you could get through in a single school year. My hope is to create a program where you could pick and choose the most applicable units for your students and build your own customized grammar curriculum. Or you could do 10 or 15 of them one year and have teachers in the next grade review and do the final 5 or 10 units.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll keep working to churn more of them out.

I downloaded the pronoun ninja ppt, but there is no sound. There are music selections for it, but they don't play when I do the slide show. Fix? or is this part of the 2010 ppt problem?

Arik Durfee  (TpT Seller)
Honestly, I kind of hate PowerPoint 2010. I'm not 100% sure if that's the problem, but it might be. One thing you could check is to make sure you have kept the PowerPoint file in the same file folder as the sound and music files. If it is moved to a different location, PowerPoint won't be able to find them. But if that's not the problem, PPT 2010 might very well be the culprit.

I still haven't found out whether upgrading to 2013 will fix the problems or not. I'll find out and let everyone know.

Sorry for the hassle,
Arik

The sample readings are all included. They are just example sentences really. I just needed sentences to work with, so instead of making up random ones I tried to use sentences that might get students interested in reading a good book. Kill two birds with one stone. So you don't need to worry about whether you have the books in your library or not.

Thanks for the question,

I didn't see any preview of the bell-ringers. Can you describe what these look like? Is there enough for the entire school year?

Thanks!

Arik Durfee  (TpT Seller)
To see a preview of the bell-ringers, the best thing to do would be to just download the two Ten-Minute Grammar units that are available for free:
"Proofreading Marks"
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Proofreading-Marks-Ten-Minute-Grammar-Unit-1-148106
"Subjects and Predicates"
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Subjects-and-Predicates-Ten-Minute-Grammar-Unit-10-148088

These units are meant to last one week, maybe a week and a half if the kids need extra practice before the final quiz.

And as for whether there is enough for the school year: YES and more! In fact, because each unit provides extra practice material (including 3 days of extra bell-ringers), it would actually be impossible to do EVERYTHING in this unit in one school year--but it works out because your students most likely won't need the extra practice in ALL of the units. But there is definitely enough material here to keep your kids learning and practicing grammar every single day of the school year.

Thanks for the question!

Hi Arik! I'm interested in purchasing this package. Based on the preview, I assumed I would be getting a PDF version. If I buy it, would you be able to send me a Word version if I provided you with my email?
I'm asking because I teach by semester, not by the year, so I would have to condense some things for the sake of time.

Thanks for any help!

So, just to be clear, the way you would do use this is to put the slides or pdfs (which one?) on the projector and then students would work from that? Afterward, students are then supposed to correct their mistakes, right? When you say you use quarter strips of paper, is that like squares or strips?

Also, have you heard of anybody doing all of these on a single day, say a Monday or Friday? How would one go about doing that?

Thanks for the information.
August 25, 2013 Report inappropriate comment

Arik Durfee  (TpT Seller)
Yes, you are correct that the plan is to have the slide projected when students arrive. They work on that for five minutes. The next five minutes is for going over the answers and clarifying any misconceptions (being careful not to get sucked into too deep of a conversation about grammar as that ends up defeating the intended quickness of the program).

As far as whether to do the slides or the PDFs, it just depends on which you prefer. The PowerPoint slide version is nice because it's interactive (click on a particular question during the review period and it will bring up the answer and a thorough explanation.) I also like the PowerPoint better because it fills the entire projector screen automatically, whereas with a PDF you have to do some careful zooming to get it to fit your projector screen just right.

As for the quarter sheets of paper, I do squares rather than strips only because it's nice and quick that way on a paper cutter.

And I've never heard of anybody trying to do all five in a single day. I worry that that would create the very situation this program is designed to carefully avoid--students getting burned out with grammar practice because it's long and boring.

I hope that helps. I think when I start with students in a couple weeks, I'll shoot a ten-minute video of my class doing one of these exercises. Then I could post it as a tutorial video for how to un this program in your classroom.

Thanks for the inquiry,
Arik
