Oh you made my day! Yes, I've noticed throughout the years how proud my hispanic students get when we do this lesson and I play up the part of Diego being the brilliant Mexican artist that he was. And it's so fabulous to sometimes have non-English speaking students in the classes I teach & see them get just as much out of an art lesson as the kids who do speak English.

Glad you'll be using my Planet Booklet lesson w/ your students:)
I used watercolor paints for my examples you see in the PDF. Just the regular Crayola watercolor paint set. I like the way the colors become light and dark naturally as you put them on the paper. I also think it makes the booklet a little more special b/c painting is sometimes a rare occasion in classrooms. Colored pencils would work too, especially if it's important to you to have the colors stay in the lines. (Being more right brained, I'm never very particular about staying in the lines.)
Either way, hope it's fun for both you and your students.

Thanks Scipi. You touched on my goal to help teachers offer art, even when they consider themselves "terrible artists". So many teachers tell me they're terrible artists when they find out what I do, and I tell them they shouldn't be lying to me and especially not lying to themselves. God gave everyone of us amazing creative abilities.

Your very welcome! Hope your students are proud of their flower baskets and learn more about balancing their artwork. It's surprising how many kids age 9 and up still put their subjects lopsided on a paper and don't pay attention to one side having way more shapes or colors than the other.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I began my teaching career in 1989, as a 5th grade teacher. Since then, I have taught numerous other grades. Between teaching in the classroom, I took a 4 year hiatus at which time I was the Education Director for the Cal Poly Performing Arts Center. This was a dream job, but the fundraising aspects were stressful for me. I then returned to teaching, and a turn of events brought me to my true calling and I became an art teacher.
MY TEACHING STYLE
I like to use art lessons to teach other subject areas such as science and social studies. The dvds I created, available on my website are fully integrated with multiple subject matter. When I teach art, I keep this quote at the forefront of my mind: "The artist is not a special kind of man, but every man is a special kind of artist." A.K.
