I spent three years as a 7th grade English teacher in an inner-city public school. I currently teach 7th and 8th grade English in a suburban private school.
I believe that it is nearly impossible to educate a generation of students who are independent from the world around them. Education is not something that stops - nor should it - upon exiting a classroom. My goal as a teacher is prepare my students to be successful contributors to their communities and to think independently. I stress basic skills applied in complex ways. In particular, I believe literature provides issues that students may face in their own lives and should therefore be used as a tool for students to evaluate larger themes and concepts; it is then, through the use of writing and expression, that we communicate and assert our individuality and intellect.
