Hi Jeannie! Thank you so much for your question! I taught first grade for 8 years, so I completely understand where you are coming from. :) Dictionary skills are still a struggle for some of my 3rd graders and I am sure that is not something you are teaching with your little ones!! :) So... I have found that the easiest way to complete this activity even with my 3rd graders is with the Dictionary.com app on an Ipad. We each have several classroom iPads at my school, so my students have access to the iPads during independent reading time. However, this still may be tricky for first grade.
The dictionary apps on the Ipad that are appropriate for younger grades all seem to be picture dictionaries, which can make it difficult to find a definition. I did not use this activity in first grade, but I wonder if you could use this as an enrichment activity for higher level readers? I bet those little kiddos would be motivated to look up definitions by looking words up on the computer or iPad! I hope this was helpful!! Have a great week, and thanks again for your question. :)

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
