Thank you for your response. I am hoping that since was an honest error where I didn't see the copyright symbol and I got the image from Google and I never intended to interfere with your product that you can contact TpT and let them know so that they can remove the strike they have given me. My intention was not to use your picture to confuse people. I can see why they would be confused and I will gladly take it down. I hope you see my point that since I call it History Mystery too I was just looking for a graphic that said it. I apologize and I hope you see it was an honest mistake.

Hello,
Please look at my product and you will see that the content is totally different from your content. I got the image from google images and since it was tiny I did not see a copyright. Had you contacted me directly I would have immediately taken it down and changed the picture. I have been using the name "History Mystery" in my classroom for 20 years. Regarding the picture, I went looking for a picture that said that and I came upon one on google images. By saying that I am selling your information as my own is misleading since it is not the information that is the same, but it is just a picture that can easily be replaced.

I tried to contact you directly as I could tell the content was quite different. In the process of writing to you on here, I received a pop-up from TpT telling me I needed to work through them. So I did. I made it clear in my letter to them that the cover was the only infringement. Imagine my surprise when I typed in a search for my History Mystery product, found my cover on your product, and then found my product lower on the page with the exact same graphic. Imagine how confusing that would be to buyers.

Hi!

Write about: Word Work a Guide for Teachers of Young Children.

I received your email and understand the process, it is explained simply in the product. My question was about the 3 words you used in 8b. bear, wear, near.
The sounds do not change in these words. Or was this supposed to be an example of 3 words that stay the same? Thanks.

Hi Carol. I think we may be dealing with regional differences in pronunciation. In my corner of the world, bear and wear rhyme with air, but near does not. It rhymes with here. The intention was for the 3 words to look like they would rhyme, when, in fact, 1 would represent a different rime. So you interpreted the focus of the lesson correctly. Sorry for the confusion.

Are you referring to #8? The focus is on words that have the same spelling pattern but are pronounced differently, leading the child to approach words flexibly. As in the example, "some - come - home," the spelling pattern is the same but "home" is pronounced quite differently. The key here is to ask the child to say "home," responding with, "Is that a word you know?" if he makes it rhyme with "some." If he pronounces it correctly, you want to make a big deal about his cleverness. Then proceed to other examples. Learning to approach words flexibly is often quite difficult for young children. But the key to this learning point is to train the child to question himself when a word doesn't make sense the way he initially read it.

If your question was not about #8, please let me know.

Hi Barbara, thanks so much for sharing your beautiful work. I just downloaded the syllable rules. My third graders are struggling with this so your posters are going to be a big help. I have a question about the example for rule #10. Should divers be divided between the v and e or the i and v? Rule 5 says "Divide before a suffix." Thanks ahead of time for clarifying this for me--and for sharing your hard work and great ideas.

Barbara Evans  (TpT Seller)
Hi Janet. You really made me do some thinking with your question. I've consulted a dozen or so dictionaries. A few do divide it between the i and the v. Considering the long vowel sound, I understand the confusion. However, I believe (and have the majority of dictionaries to back me up) that the base word overrules the vowel sound. Inasmuch as dive is the base word and is a 1 syllable word, adding the suffix -er constitutes its own syllable. Think of it like stor/ing or weav/er, both of which have long vowels but carry the consonant with the long vowel because of the single syllable base word. Hope this helps.

Good luck with the syllabication rules. I sincerely hope they help your 3rd graders. Thanks for shopping in my store!

Hello,
I am teaching an after school literature class to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders on Caldecott Award winners (mostly 4th graders). The class runs for about 90 minutes once a week. Do you think this would be an appropriate unit giving that my class only meets one time per week? I would like the children to do some sort of activity along with the read-aloud each week. Thanks so much for your help!

Barbara Evans  (TpT Seller)
As a pull-out enrichment teacher, I use this with groups that meet twice each week for 45 min., so our time frames are quite similar. It has worked beautifully every year for the past 12 years.

It is important to read all the books before presenting the clues. Thus, it may be that you can read to or have your students read the books independently in 1 or 2 sessions. Spend some time discussing the illustrations and techniques since each set of clues has a reference to the artistic medium. You might even want to provide your students with the opportunity to try some of the art for themselves.

I would recommend presenting only 1 set of clues each week. This will require the students to use their long term memory. Displaying the books and/or icons (provided) will help your students recall the books. Also, if you remove the icons of books that have been determined to be the correct solution to the clues, you will be teaching them valuable problem solving skills.

Once all the books are read, you can begin presenting the clues that describe one book. Given your time frame, you may be able to solve more than one set of clues each week. The most valuable portion of this unit is the discussion the clues generate. I just love witnessing their critical thinking. Given that a majority of your students are 4th graders, you will probably be able to sit back and let them lead the discussion. When they reach a consensus, you can confirm their choice and present them with a certificate (included).

This was a rather long way of saying that I think it ABSOLUTELY will work for your after school group. 90 min. is a rather long period for discussion once the books are read. That's why I suggested that you may want to include another activity, such as working with the art medium, or bringing in a guest artist to demonstrate it.

This unit is wildly popular with my enrichment students. I hope it will be with yours, as well. If so, there are 2 more Story Sleuth units in my store that can extend the fun.

Let me know how it works for you.

Beach Teach  (TpT Seller) re: Critical Thinking with TRIADS Bundle 2.0
Hello Barbara!
Thanks for providing a great amount of critical thinking activities and much needed for most of my students. I have just purchased some of your items and am reviewing them prior to printing. Specifically, I purchased the Triads 2.0 bundle. Sadly, as I try to answer cards from set IV myself I am having a difficult time doing it. I have a feeling that my students will have a good time working together to figure these out, but just out of curiosity should I have purchased the first 3 first? In other words, are they "easier".
Thanks for your time answering my question.

Barbara Evans  (TpT Seller)
Hi Beach Teach
There is no scientific evidence to prove that the 1st 3 units of Triads are easier. However, they are presented in the order that I conceived them. Thus, I might conclude that the 1st 3 units are more straight forward. In addition, I strongly recommend that you do quite a few triads together, collaborating and modeling thinking. Once your students (and you) get into the "rhythm," the task becomes easier.

Again without scientific data to back me up, I find this activity draws strongly on the right brain. In my experience with Triads, allowing your students to "percolate" this task provides lots of Aha! moments. It does, however, require some lead time while the right brain takes over.

Perhaps the best way to determine if the earlier sets are easier is for you to have Triads I to examine. Send your email address to me @ itsabouttimeteachers@gmail.com and I will send you the 1st unit free. I would love to hear your evaluation then of the easier vs. more difficult.

Hi Barbara, I think I made a mistake. I am teaching a unit on syllables so I purchased The Friendly Frog's Syllables Book and The Sports Edition Rules of Syllabication. My hope was to use the posters to introduce the rules as we went through the workbook, but I am finding that they don't match up. Is there another edition of the workbook? that would have worked better with the rule posters? Do you think you could help me match something up? Thanks so much!
September 30, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
n/a
Barbara Evans  (TpT Seller)
Hi,
You are right that they don't match up. The book was created to stand alone and developed specifically for my 1st graders. The order of the rules is slightly different as the order for the frog book was aligned to the 1st grade curricula I was using at the time.

The sports edition rules have 16 rules, while Friendly Frog has only 12. The rules about x and ed are omitted for the book. Plus, the 1st 2 sports rules are more or less combined into the 1st work page of the frog book.

I can renumber the rules in the frog book to match the sports rules. You could just ignore the x and ed sports rule posters
or create your own practice pages.

Contact me through my email, itsabouttimeteachers@gmail.com, to let me know if you would like me to renumber the frog book. If so, I will send the altered PDF version to you directly.

I am interested in your product but I want to know, what is the artistic media component? I am a math/science teacher and I would be using the product in an afterschool Creative Thinking class. Thanks-konnection
August 25, 2013 Report inappropriate comment

Barbara Evans  (TpT Seller)
Hi konnection!
Thanks for your question. The artistic media component sounds much scarier than it is. Basically, as you read the books with your students, you draw their attention to the illustrations. Caldecotts win because of the illustrations, after all. So, you point out that this illustrator used collage, that one used pen and ink drawings, another one used water colors. Most Caldecott books include a blurb about the media used by the illustrator. There is no need to go into great depth about the art. If an art teacher were administering this, that might be something he would delve into farther than a "regular" teacher would. That said, each week's clues include one with reference to the medium. For example, "The illustrations are vivid watercolors."

Since I do not have all the appropriate books at my fingertips, I can't guarantee that there is a description of the medium included in each one. However, it shouldn't take much sleuthing to determine the medium. This website has useful info should you need it: www.ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/caldecottmedal/caldecottmedal

I hope you enjoy this project. My students just love it.

Tommie B. re: Hoedown!
This says that there are 23 pages to this unit and when I downloaded it there were only 10. I was wondering if you could email me the additional pages @ b.barnes3729@yahoo.com.

Thanks

Oh my goodness!!! Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. The file is now corrected online. I'll send the 4 pdf files to your email. I seem to have some trouble with zip files, although the 1 on my product page seems to be working just fine now.

I'm so grateful to you for alerting me to this that I would like to offer you a free product from my store. Just name it and it's yours. :)

I downloaded your "What the Little Ghost Saw on Halloween" and my kiddos love it! Do you have one for Thanksgiving or Christmas? I have a reading group that this is perfect for! They were so proud they could read the story on their own.

That's not a problem! I appreciate your letting me know. When I was downloading it the first time, the site went down for maintenance. Didn't think it fully loaded. Apparently it did. I'll go remove it now.

Thanks so much!

I have tried to download your scarecrow glyph, but it's telling me it doesn't exist. I just thought you might like to know there is a problem with the download. Have a great day!

Yes, Barb, I am still in AZ! I teach 4th grade and love it ~ that age is a perfect fit for me. Another teacher had told me about the $1 word idea. She wasn't on campus today and that's when I looked it up on Pinterest! :) So glad that I found a C-U connection and I'll be following you on TPT and Pinterest ~ my 2 favorite sites!

I'm so pleased that you found me, Beth. What a wonderful thing Pinterest and TpT are. How else would we ever have found each other? :o) I've been checking out your boards, too. Even sent my daughter a link; she remembers Mrs. Dahl fondly. Please share my $1 Words products with your colleague. That is the most awesome unit; when I say my kids begged for more clues, I'm not exaggerating. I used it in 3rd gr. enrichment/GT. Should work very well in 4th & 5th as well. Let's keep in touch!

Did your $0.99 sale end yesterday? I put it in my basket last night and came to checkout today and it it was at $6.

Hi Heidi! Yes, my $0.99 sale ended on Friday, 8/10/12. However, nearly everything in my store is still supposed to be on sale for $3.50 or less; One Dollar Words 2.0 should be $3.50. Several of my items seem to be stuck on $0.99 despite every means of editing them that I can find. I've reported the bug to the administrators but have yet to hear from them. I'm so sorry this is happening; also very frustrated. Reports in the forum indicate I'm not the only one with this problem. Grrrr. I don't know what else to do to fix this. So, if it still shows as $6 when you check out & you buy it at that price, I will send you another unit of your choice for free just to make up for your inconvenience. Contact me on facebook to let me know: https://www.facebook.com/ItsAboutTimeTeachers

Sorry to be slow in answering your question. I was at a family reunion all day. Knowing I was going to be unplugged was why I ended my sale on Fri. and changed the prices overnight.

Buyer re: Destination Imagination
Is there a description of the activities or a table of contents? I'm interested, but I need to know a bit more. I am a K-5 gifted teacher, and I like the jack-o-lantern activity, but I need a bit more information to decide if it would be an appropriate investment for my kiddos. I am supposed to primarily support math and lang arts instruction, so I need to know if I can tweak things to make them work.

Hi Katherine.
There is not a table of contents. However, there is a preview file that you can download. Also, a few of the components are listed for free, are on Pinterest, or are on my blog. You can check them out by following these links:

http://itsabouttimeteachers.blogspot.com/2012/02/another-leap-year-freebie.html

Here's a brief run down of the other topics:
-Storyteller's Storyvine (ancient African storytelling)
-Stellar Collections (souvenirs + geography)
- Going Buggy (spooky bug craftivity to go w/ a book
-Blast Off!(recycling + space craftivity)
-Galimoto (literature + recycled craftivity)
-Eh, What's Up Doc? (verbal fluency + elaboration)
-Happy Birthday (research on famous Americans born in Feb. & March)
-Necessity is the Mother of Invention (inventors + creativity)
-April Showers Bring May Flowers (weather folk wisdom, interviews + creativity)
-Spring into Action (fluency & originality + figures of speech)
-Calling All Bears (history of Teddy Bears + creativity)
-Reading Between the Lines (idioms)
-Notpposites (phrases that sound like they should be opposites, but mean the same -- verbal fluency)

I have been a G/T teacher for a long time. Most of my materials on TpT are resources I developed for G/T and whole school enrichment. Destination Imagination is a prime example.

Thanks for inquiring. I hope you like it.

Shirelle J. re: Critical Thinking -- Story Sleuths I (Caldecott books)
I would like to verify that this unit can be used for fourth graders before purchasing? Thanks
June 17, 2012 Report inappropriate comment

Barbara Evans  (TpT Seller)
Absolutely. I originally developed it for gifted 3rd graders. As you know, the reading levels of Caldecott Award books can be quite advanced. Thus, when used it with lower grades, the books must be shared as read alouds. Fourth graders should be able to read the books independently. Similarly, the critical thinking skills will be appropriate for independent work in 4th grade, as opposed to whole class discussions for the primary classes. This unit is especially good for exercising the upper levels of Bloom's Taxonomy.

An additional aspect to Story Sleuths is the art technique used by the illustrator. Some are described in the forward of the book. Others are not. Researching the techniques (perhaps under the tutelage of your art specialist) could expand the challenge for your students.

Finally, when conducted as a competition, either within the classroom or among other classes at your grade level, older students are absolutely driven to succeed. I think your 4th graders will love Story Sleuths.

Yes! My blog is: itsabouttimeteachers.blogspot.com
Currently, on my blog I have a series of FREE poetry posters. They can be hung in the classroom if you teach an upper elementary grade or even middle school. Otherwise, I created them as a quick reference for teachers.

That said, I don't think I've really posted about actually using them in the classroom. So here's a quick description and I'll write a post soon. I like to start the year with my students creating their own poetry anthologies. They add these poems as we go through the year. (Our anthologies are 3 ring binders.) Then I choose 1 or 2 of the "Possibilities" to do with each poem, based on the current units of study, time constraints, student needs, etc. One of my favorite things to do is to use the poems for small group guided reading instruction. You can make a lesson out of almost any poem by focusing on something other than the essence of the poem. For example, parts of speech, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary,... You get the idea.

I hope this helps and please check back on my blog for further explanations. Thanks for giving me the idea for my next series of posts! :)

Scipi  (TpT Seller) re: One Dollar Words Freebie -- Critical Thinking
I saw your posting on the Sellers Forum page of Teachers Pay Teachers; so, I thought I would look at your freebie.

I have a few suggestions that might help you to better market your products. First, add clolor to the handout. For some reason, buyers like color. On your directions or suggestions pagegive a couple of examples of words that might be created. Visually showing how to play the game helps the visual learner. Also, number your pages.

If you have time, I’d love your input on my freebie listed below.

I'm so sorry you have this problem. This is the 1st time I've encountered a problem with a download, so am not really sure how to proceed. I will happily send the file to you directly if there is a way for me to get your email address. If TpT doesn't send you a way to give me a direct link, I'll contact TpT. Just let me know. BTW, I thought I replied to this earlier, but it doesn't show that I did here. So, if you get this 2x, I apologize.

Thanks you!

I noticed that you bought them twice and worried that you might be trying to get Hinky Pinkies and that there was a snafu in the links. I fully expected to hear from you and will exchange the products happily. However, I don't know exactly how to do that. Do we have to work it out with TpT? And how do we do that? I'd really appreciate your feedback on these products and don't think you can rate them if TpT doesn't know you have them. So, just let me know how we orchestrate this exchange.

Enjoy your units. My students always beg for more Hink Pinks, etc. I'll bet yours will, too.

Have a great day!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

From K to 5, G/T to Reading Recovery, and enrichment to Title I, I have taught it all. It was my privilege to develop & co-author a district model for gifted/talented education for 2 districts and to develop & implement a system for mentoring young gifted children with experts in their areas of interest. As an education specialist at the U of IL, I developed differentiated curriculum and evaluation tools for gifted students and lectured graduate classes in G/T. Additionally, I have guest lectured at the local community college and IL State Univ. Reading Recovery training, while rigorous and demanding, has improved every aspect of my teaching. The training has made me a better observer and problem solver. The richness of my experiences allows me to be a versatile and expansive developer of curricula.

Leading children to self-discovery makes me the guide on the side; rather than the sage on the stage.
