I think your 9 square puzzles has an error in it and so one is not able to complete it. In the bottom right hand square the shamrock with the horseshoe and the shamrock are not matching pictures.

Lynn, I'm so sorry you are having problems. Are you a Mac user? It seems that about 50% of Mac users have trouble getting files across the platforms. There is a thread on the forum about ways to help if you are a Mac user. I have downloaded every possible solution. My adobe reader is current. My computer will not give me the option of selecting Adobe to open files. Let me rephrase that. This is quite the conundrum. My computer, a Dell, downloads it just fine. I tried on my IPad and got your results, black boxes instead of words. Then my husband tried downloading it on his iPhone and it worked just fine. I'm going to post something on the sellers' forum to see if anyone has a solution. In the meantime, I will email the file to you directly. If you still cannot open the PDF, let me know and I will send you the word file.
I can't imagine that freebies are treated differently on the site; maybe just lots of traffic at the same time. But, we shall see what the techies know.

Hi Heidi! Yes, my $0.99 sale ended on Friday, 8/10/12. However, nearly everything in my store is still supposed to be on sale for $3.50 or less; One Dollar Words 2.0 should be $3.50. Several of my items seem to be stuck on $0.99 despite every means of editing them that I can find. I've reported the bug to the administrators but have yet to hear from them. I'm so sorry this is happening; also very frustrated. Reports in the forum indicate I'm not the only one with this problem. Grrrr. I don't know what else to do to fix this. So, if it still shows as $6 when you check out & you buy it at that price, I will send you another unit of your choice for free just to make up for your inconvenience. I am a K-5 gifted teacher, and I like the jack-o-lantern activity, but I need a bit more information to decide if it would be an appropriate investment for my kiddos. Absolutely. I originally developed it for gifted 3rd graders. As you know, the reading levels of Caldecott Award books can be quite advanced. Thus, when used it with lower grades, the books must be shared as read alouds. Fourth graders should be able to read the books independently. Similarly, the critical thinking skills will be appropriate for independent work in 4th grade, as opposed to whole class discussions for the primary classes. This unit is especially good for exercising the upper levels of Bloom's Taxonomy.
An additional aspect to Story Sleuths is the art technique used by the illustrator. Some are described in the forward of the book. Others are not. Researching the techniques (perhaps under the tutelage of your art specialist) could expand the challenge for your students.
Finally, when conducted as a competition, either within the classroom or among other classes at your grade level, older students are absolutely driven to succeed. I think your 4th graders will love Story Sleuths.

Currently, on my blog I have a series of FREE poetry posters. They can be hung in the classroom if you teach an upper elementary grade or even middle school. Otherwise, I created them as a quick reference for teachers.
That said, I don't think I've really posted about actually using them in the classroom. So here's a quick description and I'll write a post soon. I like to start the year with my students creating their own poetry anthologies. They add these poems as we go through the year. (Our anthologies are 3 ring binders.) Then I choose 1 or 2 of the "Possibilities" to do with each poem, based on the current units of study, time constraints, student needs, etc. One of my favorite things to do is to use the poems for small group guided reading instruction. You can make a lesson out of almost any poem by focusing on something other than the essence of the poem. For example, parts of speech, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary,... You get the idea.

On your directions or suggestions pagegive a couple of examples of words that might be created. Visually showing how to play the game helps the visual learner. Also, number your pages.

I noticed that you bought them twice and worried that you might be trying to get Hinky Pinkies and that there was a snafu in the links. I fully expected to hear from you and will exchange the products happily. However, I don't know exactly how to do that. Do we have to work it out with TpT? And how do we do that? I'd really appreciate your feedback on these products and don't think you can rate them if TpT doesn't know you have them. So, just let me know how we orchestrate this exchange.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
For more than 3 decades, I have taught everything from K to 5, G/T to Reading Recovery, and enrichment to Title I. It was my privilege to develop & co-author a district model for gifted/talented education for 2 districts and to develop & implement a system for mentoring young gifted children with experts in their areas of interest. As an education specialist at the U of IL, I developed differentiated curriculum and evaluation tools for gifted students and lectured graduate classes in G/T. Additionally, I have guest lectured at the local community college and IL State Univ. Reading Recovery training, while rigorous and demanding, has improved every aspect of my teaching.
