The idea of the lesson is great! I'm thinking about using this to introduce ratios to my 7th grade as well. However, I noticed that there were no instructions as to how to use the pets in the pet shop. For example, what ratios did you use, and what was the procedures for setting up the pet shop? I think that discussing the ratios are a great idea, but what should the students be "discovering" in the activity so I could lead the discussion better?

The way I used it was as a very basic introduction to ratios where I named a few relationships and had the students think about how the various animals were related. We did not even get into reducing these ratios because I wanted it to be a very basic activity where students started to understand what a ratio was. Here are some specific ratios I had them come up with, but there are many more that you can use. [I had students practice writing them three ways (a:b, a to b and a/b)].
Cats to Dogs
Mammals:Reptiles
Animals that Swim:Animals that do not swim
Birds:Reptiles
Mammals:Birds
Animals with Feathers:Animals that do not have feathers

Sorry about all the questions below, but i couldn't get it to post and then wham..it was there like 4 times. Also, I just printed off these materials and I see the materials for the red and green group, but where are the blue group materials. And, I am not sure i understand the tracking sheets. A little more explanation would be helpful to me. Thank you

No problem. The tracking sheets should be printed off so that each student has one card for the unit. The first column is for the Pre-test and helps to determine which level materials that student shoudl start with. Each of the mid-concept quizzes are 5 questions and serves as a "ticket out" for each level. It is meant to be a tool for tracking individual student progress. For example, if the student starts in the red group, they will work through the lessons on Basic Ratios and when you feel they are ready to attempt to "test out" you will give them the 5 question mid-concept quiz. If they are successful, they then move onto the green group and work on those activities.
The green group works the same way, except they get to skip the basic ratio activities if the pre-test indicates they already understand basic ratios. They need some help applying ratios. So they should work through the accompanying lesson supports that I have put in with the investigations.
Looking at my unit again, I did not put a written piece indicating what that blue group was intended to be doing. I apologize as somehow this was omited. Thank you so much for bringing it to my attention and I will be putting a direction section into the unit. (The good news is that now through TpT you will be able to download any revisions that are made to this document free of charge.)
My intention was that the blue group should begin working on the investigations independently. Basically, they will not need the additional direct instruction if they are truly a "blue" level and have shown they have applied proportionate reasoning in their pre-test. They will probably need some direction, however it will not be as intense as the green group. I have worked through all parts of the unit myself, but no doubt there will be a need for some modifications when my kids start into it. Please also visit my blog in the next few months as I will be writing daily about the "good, the bad and the ugly" because I am sure there will be some tweaking.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching middle school math for 9 years, but have had a lot of experience tutoring students ranging from middle school to 12th grade.
MY TEACHING STYLE
I enjoy making my students as interactive as possible helping them to learn through visuals, videos and games. I am excited about the new COMMON CORE CURRICULUM because it will be much more fun to teach the concepts at a deeper level. I love hands-on activities and inspiring my students to think at a much higher level.
