I have taught for 39 years in grades 1 and 2. I have just finished teaching my fifth year in a transition first grade. I retired on May 24. Now I will spend my time designing games and activities for Treasures and for the new Common Core Standards.
I have always believed in hands-on teaching. My transition classes have required this hand-on approach in all subjects. I teach in small groups of 4 to 6 students. Because we use Treasures as our reading series, my kids work in 2-4 groups during reading block. When a child is struggling with a skill or concept, I make a game or activity to use with the child and that he can then use for independent practice.
