Almaschool  (TpT Seller) re: Criminal Elf - Christmas Common Core Reading Writing and Listening Craftivity
On the Just a Note page it refers to Cupid and Eros. I assume that Cupid is the Elf, but I'm unsure of the point of view character. Sandy already tells the story, are the student's supposed to write from the point of view of the Elf or Santa?
December 12, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Beyond the Garden GATE Shari Bithell
Sorry - I'll fix that. Those are the names from Criminal Cupid. The student should write from the point of view of the elf - telling his side of the story. You could have them do Santa's point of view, but that would be very similar to Sandy's.

I teach first grade-- is the story too difficult for first graders to understand, or could this unit be modified for first grade?
November 24, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Beyond the Garden GATE Shari Bithell
The story is not too difficult for them to understand, but you will need to modify the expectations. I would just go back over the description very slowly after reading it through. They will really enjoy it. I used to teach kindergarten, so I'm sure that this would work for you with some modifications.

You don't need to modify this, I have a separate product called "Common Core Research Banner - State Report." There are actually four in this line: Country Reports, State Reports, Solar System Reports, and Greek Mythology. I also have a similar line that uses Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory - Tic Tac Toe Reports. These are available in the same four topics as above.

I saw your store on the home page of Teachers Pay Teachers; so, I thought I would look at your freebie. I left you a rating. Well done! I taught middles school math for a long time, and my husband is a middle school science teacher. I'm glad to know another middle school teachers. Since you were asking for input, here are a few suggestions that might help you to better market your products.

Add a second page which is a directions or suggestions page for the teacher. (How do use these? Are they a center activity? Etc.) List several ways you use this product in your classroom. Never assume that a buyer knows how, why, or when to use your product. Also number your pages.

I saw your name and date in the footer, but the copyright symbol, your name and date of creation on EVERY page. Items, especially free ones, have been "stolen" from TPT and posted on other sites to be sold. Here is how you do that. Use the insert and go to the right. You should see symbols there. Insert the copyright symbol, your name and date. It should look something like this: © V. Rauch (Scipi), 2011 You have to protect all of your creations. Finally, number your pages.

It is important that we see what others are doing; so, feel free to look at any or all of my freebies listed below to gather some ideas. If you care to, a rating or any feedback you might have would be great.

Thank you for your feedback. There is no way to mark "later in the year" for the third or fourth grades. I have used this assignment with fourth grade with great success. I really think that third grade teachers can use it as well, once the elements have been taught. Also, what the teacher assigns on the outside of the bag can easily be modified to fit her students and instruction. I'm sorry it was so challenging for your family - it really is meant to be a fun approach to a book report. You have given your teacher good feedback. I'm sure she will adjust it in the future.

The paper bag book report. Her teacher printed out from this download exactly as you designed it, not scaled back at all, and your product overview marks it as appropriate for third and fourth graders. She is in a second grade advanced program, but she couldn't understand half of the directions without help from Mom & Dad.

I can see third graders doing it later in the year after a lot of training. There are so many elements of literature in it - it seems quite advanced for second grade - especially this early in the year. It is a great assignment once the various elements have been taught. Also, I give my students plenty of time to complete it.

Buyer re: Fun Book Reports - Paper Bag Book Report
My second grade daughter (Cambridge Program) received this exact assignment the way you have it shown, with no alterations. I thought it was a great idea until I read the directions. What second grader (or third, or perhaps even fourth, for that matter) could follow these instructions and derive the answers without considerable help? It took my daughter twelve hours to complete the assignment and that was with her mother and I explaining and re-explaining what the directions meant.
September 17, 2012 Report inappropriate comment

Which assignment are you referring to? Most of my projects are designed for 5th and 6th grade students. They can be scaled back for younger students, but I wouldn't assign them to 2nd grade students.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching for 17 years, and have loved every minute of it! Most of my years of teaching have been in 6th grade, but I have taught all levels of learners, SDC, RSP, at-risk, regular education, and gifted and talented. I currently teach a 5th/6th grade GATE blend and just love it! Challenging students to think deeply is my passion!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I taught with project based learning before it was the new buzzword! I love coming up with creative projects that challenge my learners, and promote deeper learning. All of my units are common core aligned for grades 4 thru 8, and all promote problem solving, critical thinking, and cooperation.
