Good evening. I am interested in some of the chemistry task cards. I was wondering if there would be a way to get a preview of some of the cards before purchasing. They look great, but with a very small school budget I need to make sure I will really use anything that I purchase.

If you click on the Preview Tab for on the Chemistry Task Cards Series 7-in-1 Bundle page, it will open a PDF; which you can enlarge. The cover has pictures of the individual covers (where each has 4-6 examples of the cards on them). This should give you an idea of the types of questions.

I checked out your pinterest boards and it seems like you're interested in fitness. I have started a board (I would like it to be collaborative - but so far it's just me) to post stuff about teachers and fitness. This isn't for marketing TPT, but it is to inspire teachers that they can be teachers and still be fit. It should be pins about fit and healthy teachers and the tried and true fit and healthy things they do or want to do. Ideally the description should be personalized for each teacher, not just a repin.

If you have time to join this board, email me at anti.tang@gmail.com

Good Evening. I am presenting at our regions "mini-Cast" this weekend. I've been asked to present my take on "interactive notebooks" with chemistry. I've been teaching Chemistry for 4 years, and have used notebooks for the last 2. I discovered your "store" this year. I am using some of your products and plan to use more next year. Do you have a coupon code I can give to any attendees if any are interested in your products that I'm using? A good portion of what I'm presenting is just my compilation of resources per unit of study. Several of those are from your store. I know they have helped my students, and I'm sure others would benefit also.

Thanks.

Hello Deborah,
First, thank you for contacting me. I really appreciate the fact that you wish to share my work and do so through the appropriate avenue. I just presented at my Region's Mini-CAST this past weekend; so I know all the prep you're putting into providing a great session.

At the moment, I do not have a coupon code. I know TpT has certificates, but I've never used them and I am not sure if we'll have the time to properly figure it out. However, I'm sure we can work together to provide your attendees with something. What about a raffle? You could collect names/emails and I would email the winners, as well as yourself, an entire product free of charge (if you have all my current chemistry products, I can send you my newest product free as well). Is this something you think might work?

Please email me at jlyas714@gmail.com and we can talk more about it. I can also disclose more information about the upcoming TpT site-wide sale. I look forward to hearing from you.

Also, please make sure not to share electronic files with the Service Center or participants as this would be against the TOU. Thank you.

I downloaded an Arctic Food Chain sort last year (December 2013), which I do not see in your store any more. The reason I mention this is because I just printed it out to use next week and saw that it had Emperor Penguins and Adelie Penguins as cards. However, they do not live in the Arctic. I was wondering if this was just a mistake. It is very common for people to think that they live there, but there are no penguins in the Northern Hemisphere and no polar bears in the Southern. Other than that, I love the cards and will be using them in 4th and 5th grade (with the penguins taken out).

Hi Middleschoolscience,
I apologize for the delayed response. I am at a conference in TX; I presented for 3 hours and attended sessions. Anyway, cutting will demand the most time. You will need Velcro (dots or strips) for several of the pieces to attach them when appropriate. A single package should suffice. However, you may use snap beads or some other method of securing the pieces. You also will need a single hole punch.

I also recommend setting up weeks in advance so that you are not spending long hours a few days prior trying to get it ready. I used my summer to slowly create the sets.

I can send you a picture of a few of the pieces. It will just have to wait until I return home from the conference (by this Monday/Tuesday). Let me know jlyas714@gmail.com.

On Significant Figures task cards, #48, what is the reasoning behind only 2 sig figs. The scale is by 2 so all known would be 16 (since the scale goes to the ones) you report one past so 16.5 mL would be 3 sig figs?

I'm dealing with strep throat at the moment, so I apologize for the lag time as I've been confined to bed. Before I answer your question, let me ask: Based on what you've told me, what would the measurement be if the meniscus were a little closer to 18mL?

Thank you! And do not worry, I actually really appreciate it. That's what the Q&A is for. :)
I try to be meticulous; however, it's difficult when I am the sole reviewer. September 5, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Bond with James
Bond with James  (TpT Seller)
Hi Mabel,
When measuring with significant figures, we always include the numbers we know for sure plus one estimated digit; this is because all measurements are approximations. For #47, the length of the pencil falls in between 1 and 2. We know that the first number in the measurement is 1 (that is one sig fig). Then as you look closer, you can see the tip of the pencil falls between 1.7 and 1.8. So, we know for sure that the second number in the measurement is 7 (that is the second sig fig). Again, the number of significant figures in a measurement always includes one estimated digit. In this case, you might estimate the final digit to be zero (1.70); I might estimate it to be one (1.71). The 1.7 we are confident in; however, the final digit we are unsure of and had to “estimate”. This is why this answer has three sig figs versus two.

The same rule applies to #50. The balance reads 700 + 20 + 2.9_. I put 2.9__ because if you look closely at the picture, the rider is not perfectly on the line. We know for sure the numbers in our measure are 722.9; however, if we stop there, we failed to estimate one digit according to the rules of significant figures. So I might write down 722.91g; you might wright down 722.92g. That is why this problem has five sig figs versus four.
I was on break so I typed this quickly to answer your question. I hope that I did. If not, I will do so later tonight. Let me know!

August 15, 2013 Report inappropriate comment

Bond with James  (TpT Seller)
Perhaps it may help me if you could clarify what you mean by basic information. The cards include identification of periodic families (halogens, etc.), characteristics of metals/metalloids/nonmetals, determining the number of subatomic particles in a atom, determining the number of valence electrons, drawing Lewis dot structures or explaining why a structure is incorrect, and drawing Bohr models. 2 or 3 of the higher numbered cards get into electron configurations to determine the chemical family of an element. However, all this is information that can be obtained by the Periodic Table. I did not include Periodic Trends such as electronegativity, atomic radii, etc.. Having taught 8th grade and Integrated Physics & Chemistry (IPC), I would say that students can answer a majority of the questions provided after learning the concepts. Please let me know if this answers your question.

Just FYI, the two gallery walk slides for H2O are the same minus your name on one. No big deal, just thought you might want to know.
I love the idea of a Gallery Walk and plan to use it!
Thanks again,
a struggling first year, mid-life career change, Chemistry/Biology teacher in Houston

I feel like such a dummy! Ugh, I guess that's what I get for trying to rush for the big Monday sale. Anway, if you email me at jlyas@austinisd.org I can provide you with the updated file with Days 2 & 5. I also updated directions for all the activities. I'm glad you like it!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am a University of Texas (Austin), UTeach alumnus- which is a nationally recognized and replicated Science and Math teaching program across the United States. My student teaching experience provided opportunities to teach 5th - 12th grade. With that said, I've been in education as a teacher for 9 years ranging from: 7th and 8th grade, HS Biology, HS Chemistry (Regular, Pre-AP, AP, and a Dual-Credit course), HS Physics, and HS IPC. I also hosted one of the first courses in my district known as Chembridge - which was a partnership between my school district and the University of Texas at Austin to provide up to 6 hours of college credit to HS students. I currently provide pedagogical support, as well as content specific professional development, to secondary science teachers. However, I recently started providing support to other subject area teachers.

MY TEACHING STYLE

My lessons are designed for students to build upon their prior knowledge and/or construct new knowledge through active hands-on learning experiences. I am student-centered versus teacher-centered - that is the students are doing most of the work (labs, explaining, modeling, etc.).

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Teacher of Promise (2005); Teacher of the Year (nominee 2009);

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

Graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with: B.S. Biology / Education. M.Ed in Educational Leadership with a Concentration in Instructional Leadership (Minor in Secondary Education).

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I try to develop ideas that any teacher could modify to meet the needs of his/her classroom. In my spare time I love to go to the gym, swim, watch movies all day on Netflix, and now create items for TpT.
