I have been teaching in urban schools in Philadelphia for the past 6 years. I have primarily taught ninth and tenth grade so many of my materials reflect Philadelphia's Planning and Scheduling Timeline for those grades.
Much like Winnie the Pooh I believe that you must bring the learning to the student rather than expect the student to always come to the learning. In an attempt to bring the learning to my students, this year I have been focused on increasing my differentiation of instruction, so you will be seeing more stations, menus, choice boards, etc. I usually begin my week with direct instruction on skills/terms with guided and independent practice built in. I then move onto a weekly reading followed by a text based assessment. I end my week with a writing assignment or extension activity. Many of my materials include 2 or more level of adaptations as I frequently work with low level readers.
