Oh, I do love this idea! It allows the student to choose a book, yet still gives them work to do. It also leaves the decisions of which projects up to the student (except the mandatory ones) and the responsibility to complete them. Great for my 8th grader. Thank you!!

This project took two days of hard work, but the kids loved it! The parents also liked seeing them at Open House. I think the idea that everything on a pizza grows on a farm was an eye opener for some. After all of their hard work...we are having pizza of course! Thank you!

Cathy: I really like your unit but I was noticed a couple things. The baby "dinosaur" you have is a pteradactyl and infact a pteradactyl is not a dinosaur. Dinosaurs did not fly or swim. Also you have an archeologist finds dinosaur bones and it's actually a paleontologist. An archeologist looks for human and civiliation remains, if they find bones they call in a paleontologist. I was just wondering if there were any way to edit the unit for these minor corrections?

Cathy--Sorry but my questions seemed to have disappeared! I was having problems with the Biomes PP closing with an error message and something.exe file. I removed the video links and resaved it and it works fine now. I would still like to get the set of video links--is there a way to download them separately as my computer seems to be looking for them within the PP but the url address is not on my computer. I really like your presentations and want to purchase more of them--however, I am a student teacher and my mentor teacher is thinking I use ppts too often. do you have some strategies that would mix up the ppt taking notes activity. I always think Note-taking has to be strategic because most kids dread this part of lessons the most. However, you still have to get the information out to them and you still have to prep them for their exams. If you have access to computers, you could have them create their own power points, either individually or in groups, on the highlights of the reading material. If you want to get away from Power Points, you could use Microsoft Publisher (I love this program!) or other software programs that allow for creative outlets.
I have also typed out the notes and allowed for fill in the blank. This ensures that the students follow along, but lessens that amount of writing they have to do.
You could also incorporate games into your note taking. I have several jeopardy power points and if you send me your email, I would be happy to send you one that you could use as a template. I usually divided the class in half and kept track of points on the board. I usually did the jeopardy game as review for tests, but it could be used as a way to take notes as well. If the students get tired of jeopardy, creating their own game could be a project idea and then reused to learn new lessons throughout the year.
I don't know if you have access to a Smartboard, but these allow for interactive note taking and learning and endless other possibilities.
You could also try and lesson the note taking by using graphic organizers to simply the concepts.

Actually, it is in Microsoft Publisher format. Would that work for you? Go ahead and download the pdf file and then send me an email and I can email you the original format. I like the pdf better for downloading because then the font and such doesn't get disturbed during downloads like it might during word or publisher, so that is why I do it this way.
