Buyer re: Rules of Exponents
Hi, I really liked your Rules of Exponents packet, but I noticed that in the posters for the Product Rule, you have used a plus symbol instead of a multiplication symbol. I have snopaked it out on my copies but would like to print out a corrected one if you can fix it for me. Also, I am in the UK, so please could you use a x symbol instead of the big dot, as our kids are not so familiar with that notation. thank you very much.

My goodness! Sorry I missed that glaring error! It is now fixed and I have bundled the product so that there is a copy for my UK customers. I'd love to know what a snopake is. Someone else has told me they used that in another product where terminology I used is different outside of the US.

Hi. I recently downloaded your Adjacent and Vertical Angles pack and the Complementary and Supplementary Angles pack. They both pull up fine on my computer, but when I print I either get an error message (not enough memory) or the text ends up printing off as a very strange script that looks like numbers but not the correct ones. Is there something special that I should be doing to get this right? Thanks!

Yikes! I've never heard of that happening before. We can try a couple of things. Contact TpT support and ask them why this might be happening. They could probably tell you better than I what the issue is. If that doesn't seem to work, email me at jenalphillips@gmail.com and I'll try sending it to you directly. It may be something simple as you need an update.

Buyer re: Crack the Code
HI. I just purchased and downloaded the activity because the description looked good and so did the bugs and the other graphics. However, on the directions page, it is not clear how to do the activity as you have intended. I'm not sure now "Crack the Code" fits in. Maybe it's just me, but I've read through a few times. What exactly do the students do and what is the overall objective? Thanks! I'm excited to use this ASAP.

Caught in the Middle
Caught in the Middle  (TpT Seller)
Good Morning,
I'm sorry that the directions weren't clear. I will make that part of my next update. The objective of this activity may change depending what parts of genetics you teach, and when in the unit you teach it. Last year, I used it as a kick off activity to help students understand that traits are written in code on the DNA. This year I used it at the end to reinforce phenotypes and genes, transcription, translation, and the human genome project. I also reinforced how important it is for scientists to work together and share their research for a common goal. Students receive a bracelet that have a beaded code. The order that the beads are in is the same on every student's bracelet, but the colors are different depending on which trait it represents. I use a start and stop "codon" bead that are the same on every bracelet so that students have a reference point when comparing their bead to others in the class. Students then study the characteristics of their bug and compare them with other bugs in the class to try and figure out which bead corresponds to which trait. For example, if two students notice that their bugs are almost identical with the exception of eye number, then their beaded code will be identical except for the one bead (or gene) that represents eye number. They have "cracked the code" for that one trait. I have them number all their beads and keep track in their ISN the color variations for each numbered bead and which trait it ultimately represents. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Caught in the Middle  (TpT Seller)
For my gifted students I used it as an excite activity before beginning genetics. Students are handed a bracelet as they walk in the door, then must locate their "specimen" based on the number bracelet they picked up. Then working together, they must determine which color bead on their bracelet corresponds to which trait on their "specimen." My students quickly figure out that the order of the beads must be the same for each of the bugs and then begin to problem solve which color corresponds to a specific characteristic. It took my gifted 8th graders 2-3 70min. periods to complete. When they thought they figured it out, they could check with me. The first person to "Crack the Code" wins a Nobel Peace Prize for their work. Then as students learn more, I refer back to it. But, you could use it when reinforcing the relationship with DNA and traits. This is really an extension activity since it is not a product to specifically teach the technical side genetics such as how to make Punnett squares or what phenotype and genotype are. After completing this, we studied Crick and Watson and began the technical side of learning about DNA. This summer I will also be adding to this unit paper copies of the "Code" so that teachers won't need to make beaded bracelets. I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any further questions.

Hi Mary!
My favorite graphic purchases have been made from kpm doodles and scrappin' doodles. There should be a link on every product I create using their work. Most downloads for graphics are between $3-$7 depending on how many graphics are in a set. Once you purchase the graphics they will send you a folder with the graphics and you just grab and drop them into your creations. I make my items in the Apple product Pages using a blank page. This gives me more freedom to add new pages where ever I choose. As far as the specifics, I know there is a section in TpT for help topics where you can ask questions to everyone. That may be helpful for you. Good Luck!!

Since I moved to working with the GATE population, I can't see having anything in the foreseeable future since I always use products in my classroom first. You might take a look at Lisa Tilmon. I love her stuff for math. She also does a lot of interactive activities and teaches jr. High math. Sorry I can't help out further at this time.

Buyer re: 7th Grade Math Common Core Posters and Wall Cards
I love the big ideas and vocabulary cards, but being new to the ccss, I am confused about how you use them. Care to share suggestions?

Many who use CCSS are required to post objectives in the classroom in kid language. (Marzano is what our school district uses for teacher evals) And, many focus on academic vocabulary so the cards are from the objectives for word walls.

Buyer re: Math Fun Using Scientific Notation
While I really like the activities included in the packet and feel they would be useful in stations, I have always told my students that the coefficient (# before the power of ten) in scientific notation should be between 1 and 10. So, the fact that many of the numbers written in scientific notation (on the Cootie Catchers and Puzzles) include numbers less than one, this is bugging me, and I feel like I cannot give these problems to my students either at all or without some sort of explanation. Is this something that be changed? Or how are other teachers handling this? I did not notice it before I purchased it, otherwise I would have not spent the money.

Thank you for the suggestion, and I would be more than happy to send you the file as a document. When I have used this activity with my students in the past, students are to the stage where they must not only solve the scientific notation, but also put it in proper form. Please let me know where to send to document if that is what you are looking for.

Smart and Simple  (TpT Seller) re: 6th Grade Math CCSS Posters and Wall Cards
Hello!
In your freebie pack of the 6th grade big ideas, everything is formatted right. I just bought the whole pack, and the slide for big idea is formatted wrong. It's not too big of a deal for me, since I have the freebie file to print the correct idea 8, but I thought you'd like to know so you can fix the product for others. :)

I'm looking for the 6th grade ccss posters without the vocabulary word cards. I thought I saw it the other day on TpT. Is it still available? Thanks!

Thank you for your help. I will definately purchase another. I use these type of problems to push my students higher. So thank you for letting me know it is not supposed to be a square. That was how i was trying to put it together. I will attempt it again.

I have a HUGE set of the 6th grade posters hanging in my classroom. They are the talk of all the math teachers. What program were they made in? My son's 4th grade teacher is interested in making a set from the 4th grade standards. So is the 5th grade teacher in my building. I'd like to help them but can't edit the PDF. Were they started as a PowerPoint and turned into a PDF?

I have Apple products so I created them in a program called Pages, then I export them to PDF. I did post the templates as a free item if you are interested. Then I use backgrounds that I purchase and place it behind the text. Because of the backgrounds, I cannot offer it in Word format since I need to follow the clip art rules.

Hi Jena, I just became a follower - your stuff looks great! Do you have this available in word, so I can tweak it? My GED students don't really need to know absolute value, so I'd like use this game to practice and review their skills. Or if not, did you do this in Excel?

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've taught all levels of elementary school over the past 17 years, and have experience with Title I, ELL, Gifted, and SLD students. I spent the first 5 years teaching K-1, then several years in 4th grade, but I've taught 6th grade math and science (with the occasional history class) for the past 6 years, and loved every minute. For the past two years, I've been teaching 7th and 8th grade science to gifted students.
