I had problems showing this from my usual computer. The document would not open. I also think there is an error on one of the slides where there is an exclamatory sentence. The slide reads "explanatory." I was able to use the program and my kids enjoyed it, but wish I could have used it on the other computer. Thanks for any help opening the document and with the error.

eloughrige re: Simple Steps to Sentence Sense for Middle School
I absolutely love your system! I have used Michael Clay Thompson's grammar series for years, and this has helped introduce the concepts and build on them much more smoothly.

My question: Have you ever had success switching steps two and three? My regular and honors kids have no trouble understanding the structure, but my lower level IEP students are finding the

Step 1
Step 2
Step3
Step4A etc.

They have had success with my explaining that in order to find the direct object...it is what 'gets' the verb... (what did you give, what did you find etc.). Then...step 4B...it 'gets' step 4A.

Okay...

currently it looks like this:

Step 1 of that report
Step 2 find
Step3 (you)
Step4A copy
Step 4B me

It seems logical to explain to them a sequential order easier by flipping steps 2 and 3. Would this cause great havoc in the system if I did this?

I apologize that this was so wordy...I hope it all makes sense!

Thanks again for a fresh, new approach that has even captured the excitement of my lowest students!

Feel free to modify as you wish. I am sure you know what you are doing, and if it works for you, I say go for it. I have found that the order of the steps as they appear in my book work better than any other way, but that is my opinion. Thanks so much for the kind words. I am so happy to hear that your students are excited about grammar. That was my intention.

How would you successfully implement this into a 45 minute class period? How much time would you spend on each lesson? Is this a "unit" or would you do a lesson every day?

Charlene Tess  (TpT Seller)
Note: Students are allowed to use the SAM sheet on all assignments and on tests.
Day 1
I would give each student a copy of the SAM sheet. (They keep this). Then I would give each student a copy of the lesson notes and go through the lesson using the overhead projection sheets to illustrate. Next, assign the group practice exercise. I usually assigned even numbered sentences to one row of students, and odd numbered sentences to the next row. If time permits, trade papers and grade aloud. (The answers are in the back of the book.) If there is not enough time, do the grading the following day.
Day 2
Pass out the individual practice exercise sheet. Depending on the level of your students, you can assign all 20 of the sentences or just a few. It is totally up to you. No one knows your students as well as you do. If you need to do something else on Day 2, assign the individual practice exercise sheet as homework. Trade and grade the individual practice sentences. Be sure to take the grades. Students will do exceptionally well on these assignments and making a really high grade will motivate them.
Day 3
Give students the test. You can assign all of the sentences or just 10. (If you have the time, assign all 20 sentences because students will have a chance at a better grade.) Have students turn in the papers, but wait until the next day to grade the papers. (Do not grade them yourself. Students need to hear the answers to reinforce what they have learned.)
Day 4
Assign the writing connection exercise. (If you do not have time for this in class, assign it as homework.)

The following week, you can start the next step. Doing it this way will give you time to work in literature assignments and other necessary lessons.
The KEY to my way of teaching is to not skip any of the steps and to do the steps in order. You are free to shorten the assignments as you wish.

I am also curious about seeing a sample page. What I did see of your work looks great, but do students transfer and apply what they are learning? I work with special education high school studens and sentence structure is so difficult for many.

Thanks so much for your question. The answer is yes, students do transfer and apply what they are learning. In each step there is a writing connection page to allow students to take what they have learned and apply it to their writing.

Special education students have been using my book successfully for many years. It works especially well for them because the steps are presented in logical sequential steps.
If you will email me at Charlenetess@yahoo.com, I will send you sample pages so you can see for yourself.

Dear Charlene,

My name is Jack Dennison. I am the Editor-in-Chief of www.FunnelBrain.com, an educational website. I am writing to you because the quality of the work you have posted to PTP distinguishes you as a talented author. I am looking for teacher-authors to create custom study review materials for FunnelBrain (on a paid basis, of course).

These study materials would take the form of online flashcards, quizzes, and study guides for high school and college level courses, as well as for certain standardized exams such as the GMAT, the SAT or the GRE. We are also interested in lesson plans built around activities that can take place on www.FunnelBrain.com.

If you are interested in a paid writing assignment, please email me at jack@funnelbrain.com, and I will respond with details on the available assignments. In the meantime, please feel free to browse FunnelBrain.com.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Charlene,
I just responded to the nice note you left about the TpT newsletters. Now that I have come to your home page and learned a little of your background and your work as an author, I realize what a supreme complement your feedback is! THANKS YOU again!

Like you, I was one of those youngsters who carried around notebooks trying to write stories, but time has shown that "embellishing the truth in narrative" is my talent. The story has to be there. I just put my spin on it. I do so admire people like you who can create both the story and its telling. Can't wait to read some of your work!

Is there a way to preview this book before I purchase it? I am looking for a good English grammar workbook to use with my 7th and 8th grade international students. Your book sounds like what I need, but I would like to at least see a table of contents or a sample page before I purchase it. Thanks

When I try to download the pdf file for the interactive grammar lesson, the program opens in my browser, but there is no option to download the program.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Charlene Tess taught English and creative writing to high school students and adults for over thirty-four years. She was the Secondary Teacher of the Year for Ysleta Independent School District in 1998, and one of the five finalists for Region XIX Teacher of the Year. She is listed in Who's Who in America. Since 1996, she has worked as an educational consultant helping other teachers use her grammar workbook, Simple Steps to Sentence Sense. Mrs. Tess now devotes her time to writing fiction and teaching fiction writing to adults. She is the author of three novels, and a non-fiction grammar workbook, and has published short fiction and numerous articles in magazines and in short story collections. You can read excerpts from her novels and order her books from her website: www.authorsden.com/charlenetess Charlene and her husband Jerry spend their free time traveling to promote her books and visiting their two daughters and their three grandsons.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe that the key to learning grammar and language skills is the sequence in which each concept is presented to the students. The grammar books our school used were hard to use and confusing, so I wrote my own lessons. My students worked in groups and used teacher and peer prepared study sheets. I combined those sheets into a grammar workbook that many teaches in Texas use with their classes. Simple Steps to Sentence Sense is also available from my website: www.authorsden.com/charlenetess.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

The National Council of Teachers of English named the creative writing magazine my classes produced as one of the top 25 in the United States. The Ysleta District in El Paso, Texas, named me Teacher of the Year in 1998, and I was one of the five finalists for Region XIX teacher of the year. I am the author of three novels, a non-fiction grammar book, and numerous short stories and articles.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I attended elementary school, high school, and college in El Paso, Texas. I have a Bachelor of Science in English and history. I worked as a consultant for a publishing company and traveled throughout Texas and surrounding states doing workshops and showing teachers how to use my grammar book: Simple Steps to Sentence Sense. I also worked for one year after my retirement as an educational consultant for the Ysleta Independent School District.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am married and have two daughters and three grandsons.
