I think it would be difficult to find most of the features on your topographical or regular map-learning/reinforcing activity. Thus, the passing effort of 20, I suppose. Here's an idea that is even more involving that you might want to try--I have used it with success, but it does involve a little handyman work--Im sure you know someone. Create two-inch high boxes about 3'x 1.5' and line with plastic, which can be used year after year. Have enough so four students can work together. Pour dirt (or potting soil) into the container and let the student go at it in forming geographical features. Their creativity will allow the use of colored paper for water; tiny toys for houses, cars and such; heavy paper for a road; sand for a beach; even special-topped round toothpicks for trees/forest. One class even sowed grass seed--being easy on the fine-sprinkling of water. The finished geo-featured projects were placed in the hallway--with a rotating student monitor--for others to admire. This is real problem solving and the students seemed to love it. And it was physical involvement and creativity. And one group was allowed to copy an idea from another.

Don't know if this is helpful or even practical for you; it was for me: I liked teaching geography.

Dear Cherri,

My name is Jack Dennison. I am the Editor-in-Chief of www.FunnelBrain.com, an educational website. I am writing to you because the quality of the work you have posted to PTP distinguishes you as a talented author. I am looking for teacher-authors to create custom study review materials for FunnelBrain (on a paid basis, of course).

These study materials would take the form of online flashcards, quizzes, and study guides for high school and college level courses, as well as for certain standardized exams such as the GMAT, the SAT or the GRE. We are also interested in lesson plans built around activities that can take place on www.FunnelBrain.com.

If you are interested in a paid writing assignment, please email me at jack@funnelbrain.com, and I will respond with details on the available assignments. In the meantime, please feel free to browse FunnelBrain.com.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Jack Dennison

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I began my teaching career in the elementary grades teaching a Special Education Self-Contained Classroom. I changed school districts and taught in Junior High School, 6-8th. I taught Social Studies/History, Reading, and Math. I became a teacher/administrator at a small private school for 9th-12th grade. I taught Geography and History, plus Biology and some English. I have had a wide variety of experience, not only with subject area, but with types of students, as well.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Because my background was in Special Education, I always tried to incorporate hands-on, interactive types of projects. I like the creative sort of projects that students can take pride in their finished project and have fun while learning. I believe that incorporating their own creativity in their projects not only makes learning fun for them, but gives them ownership in what they are learning. In that way, I believe all students learn better, not just those with disabilities.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

In my third year of teaching I won "Teacher of the Year" for my school. While teaching Junior High, I won the "Kid's First" award presented to those teachers who know how to make learning fun.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

B.A. In Special Education, 1st - 8th grade
