TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Teaching has been my passion since I was a child. When there weren't neighborhood children to play "school" with me, I made my dolls and stuffed animals come to school. I have worked with students of all ages including teaching shorthand (in the old days!) and word processing skills to adults. For the past 17 years I have been teaching at a small K-8 school with a focus on math and science and an accelerated curriculum. Currently I teach second grade using both second and third grade benchmarks.

MY TEACHING STYLE

We have an active, exciting classroom with many different activities and field trips. I introduce a broad topic and then follow the interests of the students within that topic. We explore, experiment, and experience. We have many critters in our classroom and students learn to care for them. This year we raised salmon and axolotls, started a worm bin, raised ducklings, and cared for a bearded dragon, corn snakes, and glofish. I strive to bring drama, art, and music in to my lessons. Every year we perform at least one musical as well as Shakespeare scenes or an abridged version of a Shakespeare play keeping the original Shakespearean language. I have high expectations for all students. I offer encouragement and support as students find their passions and learn that, despite our challenges, we all have strengths.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Married for over thirty years. Three children living on their own now. Operated a preschool in my home when my children were young. When the youngest started school, I returned to classroom teaching. We have always had a wealth of pets and a love of trying new things. My daughter, Shanna Anderson, is a freelance artist and frequently designs graphics for me. She is partnering with me on many of the projects featured here.
