I just purchased the Furry Friends Fractions pack and love the activities. Upon a closer look at the dog cards where students have to tell the fraction of the set that is standing compared to the dogs that are laying down, it looks like the "standing" dogs are actually sitting. Would it be possible for you to change the wording on the cards from standing to sitting? I appreciate your efforts to make such a fun and useful resource for teaching fractions.

Hi! This isn't a question, just a comment. I downloaded your freebie and I love it! I found it through your blog, and when I first looked at the listing, I couldn't imagine how all the information listed was included in a 6 page download. But it's not 6 pages, it's 11! I'm sooo glad I downloaded it anyway! I just thought I'd let you know in case you want to change it. Clearly the number of pages listed isn't really impacting the love this freebie is getting though! I purchased the Furry Friends Fractions Pack...I love it! However, my principal is balking at me using several of the items for several reasons:
~stand alone "i" is not capitalized
~proper nouns are not capitalized
~sentences are not started with a capital letter and some do not have punctuation.
The only error I discovered was on a problem about a girl named kara and it has something to do with a chocolate bar...the word bar is spelled bard (oops!).
I discovered you on Pinterest and have since fallen in love with your blog. If you are able to tweak these my boss will let me use them in class and then I will be a happy fraction teaching teacher:) Crystal

Thanks! I teach in Texas, so it's more aligned with the TEKS, but I added a few details so hopefully you can see if it matches with the Common Core standards. Usually our standards are similar. The only one that might not match (that I know of) is the comparing numbers. We only have to compare to the thousands place, but I included six digits on the place value chart, so students can compare to the hundred thousands place. I hope the added details is helpful! Thanks for your interest.

Hi Chrissy!
I am just prepping my materials for this super fun unit and I was wondering how you made parallelograms and rectangles with toothpicks? Did you have some extra long skewer type ones to make the 'long' sides? I want to emphasize the similarities and differences between quadrilaterals but I don't want the square and rectangle looking the same because of the length and the marshmallows are referred to as the angles so I dont want to confused my already confusable grade 3s with additional marshmallow connectors :) Thanks for any tips! The unit looks fab! :)

Chrissy,
I don't have a question, but a wonderful story to share! I purchased your roll a dice gameboards and held a third grade tournament with your Merry Christmas multiplication board. It was fun, but here is the cherry on top---One of my third graders, our special miracle child (she spent almost a year at Children's Hospital when she was 3) who had been struggling with learning her multiplication facts won the tourney! She was literally jumping for joy! When she made the finals in the tournament she jumped down to tell her mom who was volunteering at school that day! I love your gameboards (and other designs too!) But thank you for making a special moment for our little miracle third grader! Our whole class was so happy for her!

You print out the foldable (page 7) and the cards to sort (page 8) You fold page 7 in half across the horizontal line. Then you cut the lines (only on the front of the foldable; don't cut through both flaps) in-between executive, legislative, and judicial. You cut the cards on page 8 out and sort them into the three branches. You glue them under the appropriate flap. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

madge98 re: Measurement: Length Song Freebie
I'm having a hard time getting thisb"to fit" to the tune of head and shoulders. It looks like it would be great since that is what we are doing right now in school. The song: head shoulders knees and toes knees and toes, then repeat, and eyes and ears, etc. Maybe I have the song wrong?

Yes, that's the right song. I usually sing "Head AND shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes." The and in the middle is an additional syllable.
Head and shoulders = inches, foot.
Knees and toes = yard and mile.
Knees and toes = mile, mile.

Head and shoulders = centimeter.
Knees and toes = meter, kil-.
Knees and toes = ometer.

Eyes and ears = We use units
And mouth and nose- = to measure length.

Head and shoulders = Metric and
Knees and toes= customary
Knees and toes! = too, too, too!

It's a little loose on the syllables in some areas, but mostly it fits.
Hope that helps (and didn't make it worse!)

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've taught elementary school for nine years. I spent eight years in fourth grade, and this is my first year in third! I'm a past president of the El Paso Reading Council, the local branch of the International Reading Association, and I'm also a Teacher-Consultant for the West Texas Writing Project, the local site of the National Writing Project. I love to teach all contents, but my heart is in literacy!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I love to work with all content areas and develop my own units rather than use textbooks or programs. Real reading, real writing, real experiences, real conversations :)

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I was Teacher of the Year for my campus for the 2010 - 2011 school year. I've presented at IRA conferences as well as an NWP National Meeting.
