To see what I have been up to most recently, you can visit my website at www.unitedtoteach.com. I share the links and books I come across to create curriculum for my own children. I maintain a featured monthly curriculum in addition to curriculum archives that people can visit. I taught 5th Grade Reading, Language Arts and Social Studies for 4 years. Before that, I subbed quite a bit in just about every grade level (though I tended to shy away from Subjects in the higher levels that I was not comfortable with). I am currently a home schooling mom who likes to design most of her own curriculum, though I do sometimes rely on occasional workbook supplementation.
I believe in teaching children how to learn, rather than teaching them what to learn. Show them how to learn and they can learn for a life time. Tell them what to learn and they are never free, and we have not done our job in developing independent readers. With that in mind, most of my curriculum is based on children doing research. I give them graphic organizers, and my children actually help me design some of the Math, Reading, and Writing extension activities. All units are generally centered around a Science and/or Social Studies theme. The themes are based on objectives most states are doing at the same time for each given grade level.
