Excellent method! I LOVED having something different for my 5th graders to do where they began by learning a new note (E) and then reviewed the ones they already knew (BAG). And I like that they can take it home and keep it. Great Resource!

I am not sure why it is opening as read-only. May I make a suggestion? When the PPT file is open, click "Save As" and make a new file name and save it in a different location on your computer. See if that works as it shouldn't be read-only anymore. However, if it doesn't work, e-mail me at learnmemusic@gmail.com I will send you the PPT file directly and hopefully that will solve the problem.

Hi Claire. Just interested to know how you organize your lessons. Do you have a focus eg beat/rhythm etc for a number of weeks or do you do a bit of everything in each lesson? Also do you just do a little bit of recorder each week or have a specific unit for recorder?

I have taught both ways. But after teaching both ways, I prefer more of self-contained units over the little bit of everything in every lesson. For instance this school year, we started by focusing on pitch and I made sure the students truly understood pitch through a variety of activities - listening, writing, moving, playing, and singing. Then I moved on to rhythm. Then I eventually plan on combining the two so we can read musical notation, across all grade levels K-5. As far as recorder goes, I do a specific unit for 2-3 months in the late winter/spring as a culmination of everything we learned through the year. Of course I am always incorporating music history, listening, style, and expressive qualities into our lessons, but conceptually we do focus for a while before moving on. This is a zip file so make sure you unzip the file using whatever system your computer has for that. I have not had any issues with any other user and it requesting a password so I don't even know what to tell you. However I am happy to email you the zip file directly to possibly avoid whatever issue is happening from the download you have. I can also email the files separately (unzipped) if necessary. In the powerpoint, I really like the color-coded pumpkins, but was wondering how the kids should play the boomwhackers. Are they just playing them to the rhythm of the song, or play them just once when their color comes up? What's the best way this has worked for you? Great question. I have done it both ways - whatever works best for you. And whatever works best for the age group you have. The little ones would do best with just one time per color but then maybe repeat it and go for the rhythm of the words. You could even extend into the upper grades have small groups work together to play the piece - either 1 kid per boomwhacker or for smaller groups, 2 boomwhackers per kid. That will make it super challenging!

If you are using the Smart software, you must use File --> Import and choose the file. The Smart software will convert this Flipchart (for ActivInspire software) to a Smart noteboook.

The simple answer, Yes. The longer answer....It is a PDF so you should be able to either show the PDF as it is via your projector and SMART board. Or I do believe that you can import the PDF into the SMART software and make it into a SMART notebook (I do not use SMART software as my district uses Promethean, but I know enough to know that you can use PDFs in the SMART software). Thanks for your inquiry! I hope you purchase. The flashcards are super useful in lots of settings in the music classroom.

I made these slides originally about 4 years ago. So my method now seems archaic. But what I did was create rhythms in Finale on a basic percussion notation for the rhythm and voice for the mi-re-do. Then saved it as a PDF - then made selections from the PDF of each individual measure and saved each selection as a JPEG. Then pasted each JPEG image onto a slide in the PowerPoint. That's why the resolution isn't great. If I were to create it today, I would make some kind of template with a staff/line in PowerPoint and then use a music notation font (I like Simple Music I think it's called) and simply type the rhythms/pitches in a text box and move them to where I want them on each slide. Hope this helps! Good luck and thanks for your purchase. If you email me what you want, I could make a custom PowerPoint with other patterns if you wish!

I do not know as I do not own GamePlan. I did an activity like this years ago at a workshop but this is my own version of it. So I would guess it would not be the same - although if the activity I did at the workshop was based on the GamePlan version (I did not have any paperwork from that workshop - just remembered from my head) I guess there are things that could be similar. Sorry for such an ambiguous response but I am answering to the best of my knowledge!

Not in its current state. But from what I understand, you can import Flipcharts into Smartboard notebooks. I have never worked with Smart products so I do not have experience with this myself, but I have read that you can using the Import function in Smart. Here are the steps I found:
Open the Notebook software
Click on "File" on the top left corner.
Then click "Import" and select the .flp file you want.
(Make sure the drop down box shows "Promethean files - .flp", otherwise you won't see the flipcharts in your list of possible files to import. My computer lists powerpoint by default, so I have to manually change it to select .flp files w/ that drop down arrow.)
Click "open" & then give it some time to import.
I would try this with a free Flipchart first before you purchase and download.
Also, I am planning on making a PowerPoint version of the game so you are welcome to wait for that to purchase. I can contact you when I have posted that product.

If you read the description of the download, it says that it is an ActivStudio Flipchart, which is the software that works with a Promethean brand active whiteboard. It has the file extension .flp and will open with ActivStudio or the newer version, ActivInspire.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I have taught General Music to Kindergarten through Fifth Graders for the past 9 years. I have had a passion for both music and technology from a very young age...in my classroom I combine the two to create exciting, interactive, and meaningful music lessons. I am a certified Teach21 teacher, which is a two-year educational technology endorsement for my school district. I teach at a STEM Academy where we integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics into all aspects of our curriculum. We are pushing the envelope of STEM education in public schooling and I love it!!
MY TEACHING STYLE
I use a lot of technology in my classroom. Almost every lesson utilizes my interactive whiteboard. As far as music instruction goes, my classroom is full of movement, playing instruments, practicing skills, and hand-on work. I cover music history, related subjects, and reinforce math within my music lessons as well.
HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT
I serve on various Ad Hoc Committees within my school district for both Fine Arts and Student Performance/Standards. I contributed to the development of the State of Georgia Fine Arts Performance Standards for General Music.
MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY
I attended the University of Georgia, receiving a B.Mus in Music Education in 2004. I taught for 2 years then, while still teaching, I earned M.Mus in Music Education from Auburn University. My Master's program was technology rich, as I attended class via "distance learning," which only worked to fuel my love of technology.
