TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Next year will be my tenth year teaching high school! I have taught Algebra I and II, Geometry, Tech Math I and II, Discrete Math, Pre-calculus and AP Calculus AB. I have been heavily involved with my district's transition to the Common Core Math Standards. I also tutor in students' homes.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I try to create an atmosphere of trust and honesty. While I assert my authority as a content expert in the classroom, I don't try to pretend I'm perfect. I reward my students for catching me making a mistake and defending themselves if I challenge them on it, and I designate a bulletin board in my room for the free expression of my students. I take my subject more seriously than I take myself, and enliven class with humor.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

"Most Likely to be Remembered," from the Senior classes of 2010 and 2012.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

High School at the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics, c/o 1996. BA, Interdisciplinary Studies with minors in Mathematics and Psychology and a concentration in Arts and the Humanities, c/o 2003

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I grew up in the Appalachian Mountains and enjoy hiking and other outdoor sports. I'm a member of the Episcopal Church. From time to time I participate in activities of the Society for Creative Anachronism.
