I like this packet but it is important for you to know that the pages are very tiny for first grade writers. I tried enlarging several of the sheets but that became problematic, so I am unable to use several of them.

I have done what I can to enlarge, so I think I need to just remove first grade as a recommended age for this product. With first, I was thinking more whole group with a smartboard, but it seems that most teachers print them and give them for the children to do in written form. At least that is something you can do as an alternative. I will certainly look through the unit and adjust if able though. I might be able to split some of the activities up over two pages?? Thanks for the thoughtful feedback. It helps to know what exactly needs tweaking. I appreciate your purchase too.

I think the book is a push for many first graders. The level of the book is mid second grade, so it is intended more as a read aloud/model book for first grade. You might use it as a whole group mentor text vs. guided reading book in the future if it was too hard for your students. Several pages are available for preview to give you a sampling of the unit, so I'm sorry you felt it is too wordy. It also might work well as enrichment for your advanced first graders. Thanks for your comments though. I'll take a peek and perhaps I need to revise the recommended grade level. Selecting a grade level is difficult because you know your readers better than I. I'm a comprehension girl too, so I try to emphasize model, model, model and practice, practice, practice! :-)
Revision...I also just looked at when you purchased this unit, and I saw you haven't used it with your students yet. They may do better with it than you think. I am assuming you're doing this in guided reading groups vs. giving it to them to do on their own. I hope you'll be pleasantly surprised, and I hope you'll return in the future.

Excellent! The anchor chart worked quite well with my students. I did DRTA with the Mr. Lincoln's Way for my group, but I think these materials can be used with any fictional book and multiple times. I have my students keep the anchor charts in their reading binder (strategy section) for reference throughout the year.

Hi Nicole! This unit bundle includes four separate units with materials for each chapter of the books. The Frog and Toad books each have 5 chapters, so it may take 1 1/2 weeks to complete one book. I'd say you would have at least 6 weeks worth of teaching materials with this bundle. That said, if you didn't have that much time, you could probably eliminate some pieces and still teach the book thoroughly. You could also use the materials for Frog and Toad Together and Days with Frog and Toad and do the other two another time or use one as a read aloud. Lots of options. If you look at the preview file, you can see most of the unit (but I think this was one I had to narrow the sample down some). I hope that answers your question. TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I am a reading specialist with 22 years of experience. I have worked with small group guided reading intervention and as a reading coach to the teachers in my building for the past ten years as well as ten years in the regular classroom teaching grades 1,4 and 5,and one year as a Technology Specialist.
MY TEACHING STYLE
Because my primary responsibility has been reading intervention with struggling readers, my instructional methods are based upon the individual needs of the students in my groups. I believe that scaffolded instruction targetting student deficits with quality instructional materials provides students with the modeling, support, motivation, and skills necessary for independence and reading growth. It's important to me that my students become lovers of reading, so book selection and activities are critical in my planning. By making careful choices with our materials and instructional activites, I believe we can help our students grow as readers into adulthood.
HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT
In the past three years, I've received two educational grants totalling four thousand dollars to build a leveled library and lending room for literacy workstations. With these funds combined with Title 1 reading funding, we've been able to add nearly 3000 books to our tradebook library.
MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY
I have a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Iowa State University and a Master's degree in Reading Education from the University of Virginia.
ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
My favorite authors include Jan Brett, Mem Fox, Kevin Henkes, Eric Carle, Robert Munch, Beverly Cleary, Cynthia Rylant, Gary Paulsen, Pam Munoz-Ryan, and Kate DiCamillo. Being a reading teacher is great fun because we have such talented authors creating wonderful stories to capture our children's imaginations.
