There are no specific lesson plans that tell a teacher what to do each day. I like to leave that up to the teacher because each classroom is a little different.

This packet includes a page that can be used as a pre/post test, information about fractions, activities and practice pages.

Thank you for your interest in this product,

I have not added any SS standards because I don't know anything about the national standards for that content area. Do you know if any national standards have been adopted? Or I would be happy to make the signs just for your state. I could make them available for $3.00 for each grade level.

If you'll send me a link to the SS standards you want me to use I'd get started right away to make the signs for 2nd and 3rd grade. Just let me know.
Thanks

I just saw your unit including resources for the book, The Storm. However, I was wondering does it include a comprehension test for The Storm? I love the other resources, but would also like a test to see how well my students understand the book. Thanks!

Crockett's Classroom  (TpT Seller)
Hi,
That unit does not include a specific comprehension test for the book.

I like to vary the way I evaluate student understanding of the literature studies we use, so for this book I have an organizer for recording the main idea and key details. A list of suggested responses, kind of like an answer key is provided for each chapter. That could be used to evaluate student understanding.

There are also discussion cards for each chapter with questions about the characters, events, illustrations and 2 questions for each chapter. Since these are designed to be used in group discussions there is not an answer key. But you could assign some of the questions to be answered in writing to evaluate student understanding.

I hope that helps,
Debbie

I have used a few of your third grade units and they are awesome! I am working on a curriculum for 4th and 5th grade. Do you or do you know of anyone with similar units for 4th or 5th grades? Also, I did some research on the commoncore.org units subscriptions, are these what you used to create your units? Thanks for the help!!

Hi Jennifer,
Thank you, I'm so glad you like the 3rd grade units. I'm sorry, but I don't know of anyone else who has put together units that follow the Common Core Curriculum Maps like I did. If I had more experience in those areas I might consider doing it myself, but I think they need to be created by someone who is more familiar with those grades.

I did not use a subscription to that side. I purchased the book K-5 Common Core Curriculum Maps published by Jossey-Bass in 2012 for ideas about the literature and informational text to use in my units.

I'm not familiar with the website commoncore.org so I don't know if they are the same as the book I used.

Good luck with your search,

Hi Brooke,
I don't always assign a grade to book projects. If time is short I send the project home for homework and then it wouldn't be graded. The students might present their projects and I could mark it as an oral presentation. Sometimes I only use it for a visual display in class.

If I decide to evaluate the project we brainstorm, as a group, what a quality project would include. This would then become a checklist for the students. Then I would base my assessment on how well they met each item on the checklist. Each item on the checklist would get a point value, depending on importance.

I'm not very good at writing rubrics, but I could add a checklist with point values like I've described to the packet. I'll work on that this weekend and add it to the packet. Check your purchases page on Sunday and you should see a product update you can download.

Thanks for the suggestion,
Debbie

I'm not really that familiar with interactive notebooks. Are these things to be glued in a composition notebook?

Crockett's Classroom  (TpT Seller)
Yes, the components in my packet are sized to fit into a composition book. But I guess they could be glued onto regular notebook paper and then kept in a three-right binder.

The components will help you introduce or reinforce specific standards or skills. Keeping them in a notebook means students can refer back to them throughout the year.

I tried to design the components so they are versatile enough to be used with any text. Hopefully you can use them again and again with many different texts.

I hope that helps you understand interactive notebooks a little more.

Thank you for your purchase. I'm assuming you're talking about the common core posters. The current pdf files can not have text added to them. You can put them through a printer to add the text you want or write them in by hand.

But... I have learned how to create a document in PowerPoint which can have editable boxes. Email me at crockettsclassroomaz@gmail.com and we can work out a way for me to get you the pages you need.

Hi Dawn,
Do you mean you had printed them once before, but now they won't print for you a second time? You have access to all the files you purchase on your Purchases page. You can also go directly to the product page and download it from there. After a purchase, the Add One to Cart button turns into a Download Now button.

I shouldn't need to send anything. I checked the download and it worked for me, all the pages were there. Not sure what the problem can be. If you go to your Purchases page there is a section on the right side of the screen that says "Need Help? Download Difficulties" Click on that, the TpT support team will probably be able to get the file to download properly for you.

Let me know if TpT support isn't able to resolve this problem.

Hi, I'm sorry, but I still don't understand how to make the easel/tray. It looks very sturdy in the preview picture. Is it just made out of copy paper? I guess I should have asked what materials do I need? "large rectangular piece" and "triangles"? Is it a page to copy onto legal sized paper? Will I need to copy on heavy card? Thanks

Crockett's Classroom  (TpT Seller)
It's probably my directions that need to be more specific. I'm really sorry you're have a problem with the easels.

The one shown in the picture is made from cardstock. Both pieces will need to be copied on a heavy paper in order to be sturdy enough to stand up. The triangle pieces are on page 3. There are 4 on that page and you'll need 2 for each easel/tray. The rectangle pieces are the 6 pages that say Word Building across the top with the theme picture. (pages 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24)

All these pages are copied on cardstock (8.5" X 11") You can laminate the small letter cards to help them last for several years. But I don't laminate the easel because I don't have a glue that would hold the laminated pieces together.

I hope this cleared up the directions for you and you can get the easels put together now. After you get them put together I hope your kids have fun with the word building sets.

Hi, the easel or the tray is made by folding up the bottom on the large rectangular piece. Then glue two of the triangular pieces to the back to make it stand up. The slanted side of the triangular pieces needs to face down so the easel/tray leans back a little to hold the letter cards.

Thanks for your super quick reply. Yes it's just the yards to metres (notice our "funny" spelling of that word too). That would be amazing thank you! Email address is correct.

I have 2 more questions (sorry):

When you get the kids to draw the animal habitats on graph paper, do you get them to scale it properly? So, the elephant enclosure is 60 squares by 50 squares. I'm just struggling to imagine how massive their map will be if they choose a 12 animal zoo and have a bunch of the bigger animals. I thought I'd just use small squared graph paper, but then a 2 square by 2 square enclosure for the koala doesn't leave much space to draw 2 koala and some plants and features.

Also, under Step 3 Zoo Buildings, it says "Use the area measurement to draw the buildings on graph paper for your group zoo map". Am I missing these measurements somewhere or do you just get the kids to make up a reasonable sized building?

Sorry for all the questions - I told my kids a few weeks ago that we are going to do this and they have asked pretty much every day since when we are going to start - so I want to do it well!

Thanks heaps!!!

Good morning Keryn,
I just finished adding the metric pages to the Zoo Math packet. I added three pages so the Zoo Supply Catalogue is now in standard (yards) and metric (metres). Buyers will get both versions and use the pages they need for their class.

I also added an optional page of graph paper. It is 40 squares X 50 squares. This will work for all but the Elephant habitat. If students have an elephant they'll have to draw or attach one more row of squares. I couldn't fit any more in the printable space for the page.

As far as the size of the habitats go, I know the large animal have very large habitats. But students usually don't have more than a couple of large animals. They cost so much more to purchase, build a habitat for and care for. Students will see they don't have enough money to have too many large animals. If you want you can put a limit and tell your students no more that 2 or 3 large animals.

For the small animals it will be ok to add "landscaping" with native plants for that animal outside of the enclosure. Maybe a sign can be drawn with a picture of the animal if the enclosure is so small.

I'm glad you asked these questions. It helped me go back and make a few needed revisions. Now the packet includes standard and metric Zoo catalogues, 40x50 graph paper, revised directions for the buildings, and added information about smaller habitats.

I'll email the file. The revised file will also be updated in my store. So if you ever need to download it again you can get it from your Purchases page.

Let me know if there is anything else you see. I checked it several times to make sure I got all the yd. and m changed on the Zoo catalogue pages and hope I didn't miss any.

Hope your kids have fun,
Debbie

When I'm done, I can email it back to you and you can sell it as a metric -converted copy. I totally respect your Copyright to this material and assure you I won't do anything else with it. If it's possible, my email is kakers at easternhutt dot school dot nz.

Also, do you set the ticket price or do the groups come up with their own price (I can already see some of mine saying "it's $1000 to come to the zoo!").

Thanks so much!

Hi Keryn,
I wish I could send you the file. It's not my copyright that I worry about so much, but it would violate my license for the graphics. I would be happy to send you a metric version. Is it only the yards that need to be changed to meters? Is the money ok? About the ticket prices, we discuss what would be a reasonable price. Then we usually come to a class agreement on the price for adult and child tickets.

I'll send you the file as soon as I have it ready. This will be a simple revision so I'll have it ready later today. Is this the correct email kakers@easternhutt.school.nz ?

Hi Amanda,
Thank you. It's so nice to hear that other teachers are enjoying the units.

I've always had reading and writing notebooks, but this is the first year I'll be having the students use the interactive notebook components. When a new standard or skill comes up in our lesson I plan on introducing it with a read aloud and the notebook component. I plan on using the Patricia Polacco books to read aloud as I introduce the skill, but sometimes I might use the read aloud text from the unit. It will depend on what we're doing in the CCmaps unit at that time.

Right now I'm working on notebook components that can be used with any literature study. Then I'm going to move on to the notebook components for the RF, RI, L and W standards. I think all of them will blend smoothly with the CCmaps units. The interactive notebooks will be a way for students to have a resource for all of these standards.

The Sum it Up organizer from Unit 1A would work well to see how student are able to summarize a chapter. The main focus of that organizer is writing a summary with character, problem, solution and central message. There is also the lighthouse organizer that goes with The Storm. It focuses on the key events and big idea. Both would work well as a wrap up activity. Since it's for an observation I'd pick the one I thought my kids were most prepared for. If they've had previous experience with one or the other organizer that will help.

Good luck with your observation, hope everything goes smoothly,

Thank you for the questions and interest in my newest product. The Interactive Notebook components don't follow the themes in my Common Core Units, so in that way they don't follow each other. But, the components for the IN are aligned with the standards so you can use them with the CC units. Good morning lorreo,
Most teachers display the posters so the whole class can see the standards focus for the day. They are as large as a regular piece of paper will allow so they are pretty easy to see from anywhere in the room.

The pocket chart cards are a good size to use at a small teaching area. (3 cards per page) If you have a reading table or a small area for small group math instruction you can put up the cards to show the standard focus for the small group instruction that day.

Thank you for asking. I'd like to start working on some science units, but probably not this year. My district isn't using the Next Generation science standards this year so I'm not very familiar with them yet. Maybe next summer.

Hi Helen, thank you so much. I wish I knew of someone putting the fourth grade units together, but I don't. I don't have enough experience with that curriculum or else I might give it a try.

Thank you for your question,
I'm sorry, but the check list is not editable, it's a part of the pdf file. The word "editable" is not used in the description so I'm not sure what you're referring to in your question.

I just got this reply from TpT support:

Let's be sure that she is opening these with the latest version of Adobe Reader, which can be downloaded from here:
http://get.adobe.com/reader
Once this application is downloaded to her computer, she can follow these steps:
1) Open the PDF file with Adobe Reader
2) Click ‘Print’
You'll come to this window here (see attached)!
3) Click on ‘Advanced’
4) Check the ‘Print as Image’ box, and this should cover all potential issues.
Regards, Shaun

I can send you the pdf file through email, but I don't know why that would make a difference. My email is dsrtdebaz@gmail.com.

I'll also send this information to TpT and see if they can help us with this printing problem.

Uh Oh! That's not good. I know the file is working because other teachers have been able to print the pdf file. I also just downloaded the file from the site and had no problem printing one of the pages.

From what I've heard from other users who've had a printing problem you need to make sure you have the latest version of Adobe Reader. If that doesn't work contact TpT for technical support.
Sincerely,

Amy W. re: Common Core Third Gade Posters for Arizona (I can) Modern Font
Hello,
A colleague of mine purchaed your Arizona Common Core I can statements for 5th grade. I really like them and I am interested in purchasing the 3rd grade common Core I can statements but I am unsure if the third grade statements also come with the self evaluation (4,3,2,1) posters. Does the Arizona 3rd grade I can statements set come with those self reflection evaluations?

Hi Amy 24,
Do you mean the generic learning scale I made.
It has:
4- know everything that was taught so well I can teach it to others.
3-I know and can do everything that was taught without mistakes.
2- I can do most of the things that were taught but need help with the harder parts.
1-With help I can do some of what was taught.
0-don’t know what was taught and can’t do any of it.

It is a free product on my site called Our Learning Keeps Growing. The poster sets do not have learning scales.

If that's not what you mean please let me know.

Buyer re: Common Core Fourth Grade Posters (I can . . .) Modern style font
I see below (Aug. 13th) that you have your posters with a block font that would be more readable in the back of the room. I am required to post my I Can statements in the classroom so they need to be able to be read throughout the room. Is the block print larger than the modern print? If yes, are they for sale on TPT? Am I able to change the posters once I buy them (ex. make the font bold etc. or enlarge it to fit a 8x 14 sheet of paper)? Finally did you create a poster for every Language Art(ELA) and Math 4th Grade common core standards?
Sorry to ask so many questions but it is hard to tell from the preview if this will meet the needs of my student.

Hi mrsm262,
The font on both styles are about the same size. Both styles of font (modern and Zaner Bloser style) are available with the fourth grade standards. If it would help I'd be happy to send you a sample page from both sets so you can see them before you purchase a set. Email me at dsrtdebaz@gmail.com if you'd like the sample posters.

All the posters are 8.5 X 11 inches, landscape view. They are pdf files so you cannot make any changes to them. I don't know about enlarging them for the printing process. You can give it a try on the sample pages.

And yes, every ELA, Math and now Science standard is included. I just added the science standards from nextgenscience.org.

I hope I got to all of your questions. Let me know if there is any other way I can help.

Buyer re: Writing Process for Amazing Authors, Classroom Tools
On the page where I purchased the item it shows a sheet that has the writing process broken down like the one on the downloaded page 4. On page 4 you have craft, etc. We use the writing process so I would love the sheet that is shown on the purchase page. The description says there are two versions but the download only gives you one. Thanks

Wednesday evening: I just uploaded the correct version of this file.

Hi Rossbma,
I think I'm losing my mind! I know I updated that file with the traditional writing process wording in early August. Now it's not there. I can't figure out what happened to it. I'm so sorry about this mix up. I will work on it again and get it reposted by Thursday evening.

Again, I'm very sorry you have to wait for the correct file.

Amanda W. re: 3 R's; Effective Classroom Management System
We made it through the first week and had our first "Friday Reward Time" . I think the system will work very well. My question is how you communicate to each child how many infractions they have? Do you wait until the end do the day and conference with them? Or do you have a whole class display or some other visual?

Hi Amanda,
Thank you so much for your question. I went back to the packet and realized that I needed to explain how I use the Student Responsibility Sheets a little more. I just uploaded a revised version of the product that I hope clears up your question. Basically, the Student Responsibility Sheet is the communication for both students and parents. You can download the new version from your purchases page that explains the process in more detail.

The new file is a zip file because I also added a PowerPoint version of the Student Responsibility Sheet. On this version you can click and change the text so you can make it totally fit your classroom. (I just learned how to make these editable files so it's nice to add them to some of my previously posted products.)

If there are any other questions you have I'd be glad to help. You can email me at dsrtdebaz@gmail.com.

Hi Lupe,
This set of posters contain the ELA and Math standards from corestandards.org and the science standards from nextgenscience.org. The ELA and Math standards have been adopted by California. I think the states are in the process of adopting the science standards. You'd have to check with your or district or state dept. of ed. to see if the science standards would apply to your classroom.

Hi Veronica,
You have to the science standards now. I sent out a notification so I'm not sure why you didn't receive that. All you have to do is download the file again from your "My Purchases" page. Any updates I do to the poster sets are free to customers who've already purchased them.

I don't have the Social Studies standards and don't have any idea when I'll have time to add them. A notification will be sent again when I make any updates to the file.

Hi and welcome to TpT. I see from my sales page that you figured out how to purchase the posters. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner today, but I was busy tiling the backsplash in my kitchen. What a job!

Anyway, buying products on TpT is super easy. You purchase through the site and TpT then pays me. Another great thing is everything you purchase is kept on your "My Purchases" page. If you misplace the file you can always download it again. Also, if a seller updates the product you'll be notified and can download it again with the updates.

Thank you for your purchase and let me know if there is anything else I can help you with,

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

From my many years as a teacher, I've discovered that a classroom is a magical place. Young children enter, ready to learn and confident, mature students leave, ready to take on the world! My classroom has always been my home away from home. It's important to make a classroom a warm and inviting place for the students and teacher. After all, such a large part of your day and your year is spent within those four walls! I love watching those "light bulbs" go on as students grasp the big idea of the lessons I've planned. The challenge is planning lessons and units that are engaging and academically sound I love that challenge! Through my carreer I've seen many changes, but none as great as the transition to the new Common Core State Standards. My goal is to use my experiences to create engaging, meaningful, and academic based units and materials for classroom teachers. My 30+ years of teaching have included 1st grade, Special Education-Resource program (K-8), 4th grade and my favorite, third grade..

MY TEACHING STYLE

I love teaching with units that integrate all subject areas. Students learn best when they are excited about the activities.
