I used your CCSS pocket chart (I can...) for the past 2 years when in grade 3 and they have been wonderful!! Now I am moving to grade 5 and was wondering if you would be able to create the grade 5 CCSS pocket chart for me in the same color tones as the grade 3 (Green/grey). However if it is a huge hassle, please don't bother. I have bought many green accents for my room and I would just LOVE it if this is possible. If not, no worries, just thought I would ask before buying!!! :) Thanks

Hi Allison,
That's a good question and I don't have an answer for you. I don't know anything about downloading files to a smartphone. I think it would be a good idea to take the file on a flash drive.

You might try calling Staples to see if they know. They might have had that question before, from other printing customers.

Good luck,

Hi Anne,
As far as I know there are no national Social Studies CCS so I have not put them into any of my sets. I think each state or district has their own SS standards. If you have different information I'd love a link to the National SS CCS.

I would be happy to do a custom order for you with the standards used by your district. If you send me a list of the standards I will reword them into kid friendly language and put them on the posters so they match the set you already have.

What I would need is a link to the standards or a copy sent to me. I would also need to verify that you purchased the first grade set. If you tell me the the day of your purchase I can search my records.

The custom order would be $5 for the social studies standards.

You can email me at crockettsclassroomaz@gmail.com if you're interested in discussing this more,
Thanks, Debbie

Thank you for bringing this error to my attention. The Fourth Grade Interactive Notebook matches the fourth grade standards.

I wrote the 3rd grade version first and copied the description when I posted the 4th grade version. I thought I changed all the wording and the list of standards, but I guess I missed that word in the description.

But I just double checked the product and this is definitely the 4th grade version.

Hi Angela,
Thank you so much, I'm glad you like the statements. Sorry, but I can't send you the whole set in an editable format because of the restrictions on the clip art I used. I created all the posters in Word and the only way to secure the images is to lock them in a PDF format.

At the end of each set are some blank pages with the frame and clip art. I intended those to be used by customers to write in any standards they needed for their state or district standards. I realize most teachers want everything to match and would rather be able to type in the statements and then print them out.

So, what I can do for you is to transfer those blank pages over to PowerPoint. In PowerPoint I can make the whole page a background image which you wouldn't be able to change. But you could add a text box on top and type anything you want.

All I need to know is which set you purchased and the date of your purchase. If you'll send that information to me at crockettsclassroomaz@gmail.com I'll work on the editable blank pages and send then back to you through email.

Crockett's Classroom  (TpT Seller)
Hi,
That unit does not include a specific comprehension test for the book.

I like to vary the way I evaluate student understanding of the literature studies we use, so for this book I have an organizer for recording the main idea and key details. A list of suggested responses, kind of like an answer key is provided for each chapter. That could be used to evaluate student understanding.

There are also discussion cards for each chapter with questions about the characters, events, illustrations and 2 questions for each chapter. Since these are designed to be used in group discussions there is not an answer key. But you could assign some of the questions to be answered in writing to evaluate student understanding.

I hope that helps,
Debbie

Hi Jennifer,
Thank you, I'm so glad you like the 3rd grade units. I'm sorry, but I don't know of anyone else who has put together units that follow the Common Core Curriculum Maps like I did. If I had more experience in those areas I might consider doing it myself, but I think they need to be created by someone who is more familiar with those grades.

I did not use a subscription to that side. I purchased the book K-5 Common Core Curriculum Maps published by Jossey-Bass in 2012 for ideas about the literature and informational text to use in my units.

I'm not familiar with the website commoncore.org so I don't know if they are the same as the book I used.

Good luck with your search,

Crockett's Classroom
Crockett's Classroom  (TpT Seller)
Hi Brooke,
I don't always assign a grade to book projects. If time is short I send the project home for homework and then it wouldn't be graded. The students might present their projects and I could mark it as an oral presentation. Sometimes I only use it for a visual display in class.

If I decide to evaluate the project we brainstorm, as a group, what a quality project would include. This would then become a checklist for the students. Then I would base my assessment on how well they met each item on the checklist. Each item on the checklist would get a point value, depending on importance.

I'm not very good at writing rubrics, but I could add a checklist with point values like I've described to the packet. I'll work on that this weekend and add it to the packet. Check your purchases page on Sunday and you should see a product update you can download.

Thanks for the suggestion,
Debbie

Yes, the components in my packet are sized to fit into a composition book. But I guess they could be glued onto regular notebook paper and then kept in a three-right binder.

The components will help you introduce or reinforce specific standards or skills. Keeping them in a notebook means students can refer back to them throughout the year.

I tried to design the components so they are versatile enough to be used with any text. Hopefully you can use them again and again with many different texts.

I hope that helps you understand interactive notebooks a little more.

Hi Dawn,
Do you mean you had printed them once before, but now they won't print for you a second time? You have access to all the files you purchase on your Purchases page. You can also go directly to the product page and download it from there. After a purchase, the Add One to Cart button turns into a Download Now button.

I shouldn't need to send anything. I checked the download and it worked for me, all the pages were there. Not sure what the problem can be. If you go to your Purchases page there is a section on the right side of the screen that says "Need Help? Let me know if TpT support isn't able to resolve this problem.

Hi, I'm sorry, but I still don't understand how to make the easel/tray. It looks very sturdy in the preview picture. Is it just made out of copy paper? Crockett's Classroom  (TpT Seller)
It's probably my directions that need to be more specific. I'm really sorry you're have a problem with the easels.

The one shown in the picture is made from cardstock. Both pieces will need to be copied on a heavy paper in order to be sturdy enough to stand up. The triangle pieces are on page 3. There are 4 on that page and you'll need 2 for each easel/tray. The rectangle pieces are the 6 pages that say Word Building across the top with the theme picture. (pages 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24)

All these pages are copied on cardstock (8.5" X 11") You can laminate the small letter cards to help them last for several years. But I don't laminate the easel because I don't have a glue that would hold the laminated pieces together.

I hope this cleared up the directions for you and you can get the easels put together now. After you get them put together I hope your kids have fun with the word building sets.

Hi, the easel or the tray is made by folding up the bottom on the large rectangular piece. Then glue two of the triangular pieces to the back to make it stand up. The slanted side of the triangular pieces needs to face down so the easel/tray leans back a little to hold the letter cards.

Thanks for your super quick reply. Yes it's just the yards to metres (notice our "funny" spelling of that word too). That would be amazing thank you! Email address is correct.

I have 2 more questions (sorry):

When you get the kids to draw the animal habitats on graph paper, do you get them to scale it properly? So, the elephant enclosure is 60 squares by 50 squares. I'm just struggling to imagine how massive their map will be if they choose a 12 animal zoo and have a bunch of the bigger animals. I thought I'd just use small squared graph paper, but then a 2 square by 2 square enclosure for the koala doesn't leave much space to draw 2 koala and some plants and features.

Also, under Step 3 Zoo Buildings, it says "Use the area measurement to draw the buildings on graph paper for your group zoo map". Am I missing these measurements somewhere or do you just get the kids to make up a reasonable sized building?

Sorry for all the questions - I told my kids a few weeks ago that we are going to do this and they have asked pretty much every day since when we are going to start - so I want to do it well!

Thanks heaps!!!

I just finished adding the metric pages to the Zoo Math packet. I added three pages so the Zoo Supply Catalogue is now in standard (yards) and metric (metres). Buyers will get both versions and use the pages they need for their class.

I also added an optional page of graph paper. It is 40 squares X 50 squares. This will work for all but the Elephant habitat. If students have an elephant they'll have to draw or attach one more row of squares. I couldn't fit any more in the printable space for the page.

As far as the size of the habitats go, I know the large animal have very large habitats. But students usually don't have more than a couple of large animals. They cost so much more to purchase, build a habitat for and care for. Students will see they don't have enough money to have too many large animals. If you want you can put a limit and tell your students no more that 2 or 3 large animals.

For the small animals it will be ok to add "landscaping" with native plants for that animal outside of the enclosure. Maybe a sign can be drawn with a picture of the animal if the enclosure is so small.

I'm glad you asked these questions. It helped me go back and make a few needed revisions. Now the packet includes standard and metric Zoo catalogues, 40x50 graph paper, revised directions for the buildings, and added information about smaller habitats.

I'll email the file. The revised file will also be updated in my store. So if you ever need to download it again you can get it from your Purchases page.

Let me know if there is anything else you see. I checked it several times to make sure I got all the yd. and m changed on the Zoo catalogue pages and hope I didn't miss any.

Hope your kids have fun,
Debbie

Hi Debbie,

I am about to start this with my kids - they are SUPER excited! Just wondering...I am in New Zealand and we use metric - is there any way you can email me this as a file I can change? When I'm done, I can email it back to you and you can sell it as a metric -converted copy. I totally respect your Copyright to this material and assure you I won't do anything else with it. If it's possible, my email is kakers at easternhutt dot school dot nz.

Also, do you set the ticket price or do the groups come up with their own price (I can already see some of mine saying "it's $1000 to come to the zoo!").

Thanks so much!

Kind regards,
Keryn.

Hi Keryn,
I wish I could send you the file. It's not my copyright that I worry about so much, but it would violate my license for the graphics. I would be happy to send you a metric version. Is it only the yards that need to be changed to meters? Is the money ok? About the ticket prices, we discuss what would be a reasonable price. Then we usually come to a class agreement on the price for adult and child tickets.

I'll send you the file as soon as I have it ready. This will be a simple revision so I'll have it ready later today. Is this the correct email kakers@easternhutt.school.nz ?

Not yet. I plan on adding the components for Foundational skills next. Then I'll add the Reading Informational text components.
It will probably take me a month or so to get all that added to my Interactive Notebook packet.

As I add more parts the price will go up a little. If you buy it now you'll get to download the updates at no extra cost.

Hi Amanda,
Thank you. It's so nice to hear that other teachers are enjoying the units.

I've always had reading and writing notebooks, but this is the first year I'll be having the students use the interactive notebook components. When a new standard or skill comes up in our lesson I plan on introducing it with a read aloud and the notebook component. I plan on using the Patricia Polacco books to read aloud as I introduce the skill, but sometimes I might use the read aloud text from the unit. It will depend on what we're doing in the CCmaps unit at that time.

Right now I'm working on notebook components that can be used with any literature study. Then I'm going to move on to the notebook components for the RF, RI, L and W standards. I think all of them will blend smoothly with the CCmaps units. The interactive notebooks will be a way for students to have a resource for all of these standards.

Debbie,

I think the main objective is to describe the central message and explain how it is told through key details in the text. I was thinking about using the "Sum It Up" organizer from Unit 1. The students would also be able to choose what chapter from Unit 2B,The Storm, they want to use. Do you think this would be a good way to tie everything together?

The Sum it Up organizer from Unit 1A would work well to see how student are able to summarize a chapter. The main focus of that organizer is writing a summary with character, problem, solution and central message. There is also the lighthouse organizer that goes with The Storm. It focuses on the key events and big idea. Both would work well as a wrap up activity. Since it's for an observation I'd pick the one I thought my kids were most prepared for. If they've had previous experience with one or the other organizer that will help.

Good luck with your observation, hope everything goes smoothly,
Debbie

Good morning!
First I would like to say how very much I have enjoyed your units. I purchased ALL of them! They are such a refreshing change! For my observation, I plan to use the circle talk from Unit 2B. I was wondering if you had any ideas to share as to what I could do after the circle talk to tie everything together? I was thinking about some type of graphic organizer. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Glynis,
So nice to hear you're enjoying the units. What is the main objective of you lesson? I might be able to suggest a graphic organizer to tie in with the objective.

I'm just discovering these units and have been trying to implement the CC standards a little this year. These units look fantastic but I'm not certain how you integrate with reading. Are these whole class lessons and if so how to you fit in guided reading or reader's workshop? Thanks!!

The reading activities for each unit is different. Some units have whole class reading and some have literature studies for small groups. In my class I have whole class instruction time for skills and comprehension strategies (about 30 min). Then I have time for small literature groups. My kids work on their lit assignment, skills practice and their Accelerated Reader book (about 60 min).

I think you're referring to the page, My Reading Record. It has a column to record book quiz scores, like Accelerated Reader. There are no quizzes in this product.

Does this unit follow your Common Core Units? Can you use them together?

Hi dianede,
Thank you for the questions and interest in my newest product. The Interactive Notebook components don't follow the themes in my Common Core Units, so in that way they don't follow each other. But, the components for the IN are aligned with the standards so you can use them with the CC units. Since you can put the components into the interactive notebook in any order it would be very easy to coordinate them with the CC units.

I hope this answer helps,
Debbie

I'm so pleased your kids are enjoying the packet. Sorry, but I do not have packets for either of those books. They're great books so I'll put them on my to-do list. Thank you for the suggestion.

Your Common Core 3rd grade bundle looks wonderful. I teach 4th grade and am looking for something that would give me direction in teaching language arts to my students. Do you have anything like this for 4th grade?

Thank you so much. I'm sorry, but I don't have the 4th grade units. I'm not as familiar with the 4th grade curriculum and standards so I don't feel as comfortable creating the units for that grade level.

Good morning lorreo,
Most teachers display the posters so the whole class can see the standards focus for the day. They are as large as a regular piece of paper will allow so they are pretty easy to see from anywhere in the room.

The pocket chart cards are a good size to use at a small teaching area. (3 cards per page) If you have a reading table or a small area for small group math instruction you can put up the cards to show the standard focus for the small group instruction that day.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

From my many years as a teacher, I've discovered that a classroom is a magical place. Young children enter, ready to learn and confident, mature students leave, ready to take on the world! My classroom has always been my home away from home. It's important to make a classroom a warm and inviting place for the students and teacher. After all, such a large part of your day and your year is spent within those four walls! I love watching those "light bulbs" go on as students grasp the big idea of the lessons I've planned. The challenge is planning lessons and units that are engaging and academically sound I love that challenge! Through my carreer I've seen many changes, but none as great as the transition to the new Common Core State Standards. My goal is to use my experiences to create engaging, meaningful, and academic based units and materials for classroom teachers. My 30+ years of teaching have included 1st grade, Special Education-Resource program (K-8), 4th grade and my favorite, third grade..

MY TEACHING STYLE

I love teaching with units that integrate all subject areas. Students learn best when they are excited about the activities.
