Hi, Audra! The idea is to keep the narrative balanced by having students tell as much of what happened BEFORE the main event as AFTER. So, I do not allow my students (5th graders) to even MENTION the main event/big moment until they reach the 3rd hole of their notebook paper, which means they are nearly at the bottom of the page. That way, they spend the entire front side telling what happened BEFORE, then they describe the main even, and finally, they use the entire back side of the paper telling what happened AFTER that main event.

I have a narrative PowerPoint presentation that would probably be helpful. It may not be helpful to show to the students because it's quite lengthy, but it would be good for you to view to break down into smaller, more manageable chunks for your students. I am a writing consultant for our school district and for two state universities (and a 5th grade teacher, who prepares students for a state writing assessment as well), and the strategies in the PowerPoint are used sucessfully in our school district of 63 elementary schools district wide. Your 7th graders would most likely apply a 3-hole rule. What that means is that they are not allowed to mention the during/big moment/main event until they get to the third hole of their notebook paper. That will ensure that they spend enough time completing the before/beginning of the paper while still having enough room for the after/end. Most kids either rush straight to the big moment without setting the stage or they do a great job setting the stage and then fizzle out. The 3-hole rule ensures they write from the top of the page to the bottom of the front about the before, then they describe the during in a paragraph or two, and finally, they write from the top of the back of the page until the bottom of the back about the after.
