Buyer re: Common Core Standards: English Language Arts (ELA), GRADE 3
Did you include the specific language in the CC and did you include all of the standard...like parts a,b, c ,d if applicable?

Hi! I used the language specific to the standard and published by the CC in each content standard, but for your second question, I am really not sure. I created the file a long time ago, and as a 5th grade teacher, I am not familiar with the 3rd grade standards to know whether they had subparts to each standard. Each card notes the standard it addresses, but each card is its own separate file, so it would take more time than I have this morning to open each file. I typed them exactly how I created my own 5th-grade set, and exactly how I needed them. Hope that helps!

Hi Deanne,
I purchased and downloaded the Common Core Standards, but when it opens in Adobe, there is a square and no picture/text. What am I missing? Thanks for helping me out.

Never mind, I just opened it in Word, saved it as a doc. and it's working great! Not sure why it automatically opened up Adobe first.

Hi! I am SO sorry for the delayed response. I normally ge an email alert from TPT to let me know that a user has posted a question, but that must not be the case any more! I just happened to login today and found your questions. Regardless, yes, I am still selling the books and prompts. Just email the titles you want after purchase and I'll get them out to you within 24 hrs. I have emailed TPT about not receiving notifications, so after purchase, you can email the titles to deannedavis36527@gmail.com, which is a reliable address while I work out the glitch with TPT. Thanks!

I love this idea! I received a grant to buy books for students to tape record. The bonus of having writing lessons to go with them is tempting. Is it possible for me to see a sample? Your collection of 5 books costs $20. Are the extra fees for shipping/handling?

Deanne, I have not used tpt for a while . . . . since the updated website. I am trying to buy your LANGUAGE: Sentences: Simple, Complex, and Compound powerpoint. I purchased it a while back but cannot locate it on my old computer anymore. I am happy to purchase it AGAIN because I LOVED it, but I can't find anywhere to actually purchase it. TPT tells me I own it, which I do, but I just want to re-purchase and can't find an icon to click on. Can you help me? I need this powerpoint before Tuesday. Thanks. You can e-mail me at: lwick@cdaschools.org

Buyer re: Writing in the Narrative Mode
Hi,

I just purchased your narrative powerpoint, and I love it. I just was wondering if you could clarify the 2 or 3 hole rule. I have an idea, but I'm just checking.

Thanks,

Hi, Audra! The idea is to keep the narrative balanced by having students tell as much of what happened BEFORE the main event as AFTER. So, I do not allow my students (5th graders) to even MENTION the main event/big moment until they reach the 3rd hole of their notebook paper, which means they are nearly at the bottom of the page. That way, they spend the entire front side telling what happened BEFORE, then they describe the main even, and finally, they use the entire back side of the paper telling what happened AFTER that main event.

Cheryl W. re: Writing in the Narrative Mode
I am a special education teacher and very much in need of some information to help my students with the state writing assessment. They are 5th graders and they are required to do narrative writing. My students are reading on a 2nd and 3rd grade level and one is a non-reader. What strategies do you have that will help me to help my students?

I have a narrative PowerPoint presentation that would probably be helpful. It may not be helpful to show to the students because it's quite lengthy, but it would be good for you to view to break down into smaller, more manageable chunks for your students. I am a writing consultant for our school district and for two state universities (and a 5th grade teacher, who prepares students for a state writing assessment as well), and the strategies in the PowerPoint are used sucessfully in our school district of 63 elementary schools district wide. Good luck!

I purchased & downloaded your Writing in the Narrative Mode PPT (twice in fact because I couldn't find the first one on my thumbdrive)and am puzzled by the 2- or 3- hole rule. I searched online and browsed through some of your other writing ppt but couldn't find the answer. I think the ppt will help my seventh graders to become better writers. Thanks! Jeanne Thomas (c)

Your 7th graders would most likely apply a 3-hole rule. What that means is that they are not allowed to mention the during/big moment/main event until they get to the third hole of their notebook paper. That will ensure that they spend enough time completing the before/beginning of the paper while still having enough room for the after/end. Most kids either rush straight to the big moment without setting the stage or they do a great job setting the stage and then fizzle out. The 3-hole rule ensures they write from the top of the page to the bottom of the front about the before, then they describe the during in a paragraph or two, and finally, they write from the top of the back of the page until the bottom of the back about the after.
