I really appreciate your feedback. I worked hard on this lesson. It is a Common Core exemplar and so I know that many teachers will be teaching Lincoln's two hallmark pieces. Informational text is new to many English teachers and frightening to teach. We love our fiction and poetry! Since the Common Core recommends synthesis and some of the assessments like the PARCC Consortium assessments will be making their way into classrooms soon, this activity was geared toward that goal. My AP Language students are Open Access, thus I have many hard workers who might not enter the AP class ready to do college level work but certainly want to be there. By the time we get to Gatsby, we have done two synthesis papers. This is the first one I give to them "cold" without working through the sources with them. Thanks for the feedback! My school is a high poverty school so our on-level are remedial co-taught classes. Our AP classes are a mix of the few gifted students who don't go elsewhere to magnet schools and incredibly hardworking "honors" students. We eliminated honors in 11th grade and have just on-level and AP Language/American Lit. Thus, with my population in mind, I categorized it as AP. For a advanced or gifted class, I would ask them to include some of their own sources to make their argument or cite specific passages from the Great Gatsby to support their claim. Debbie

The standards for 11th and 12th are slightly different and expanded so I made the 11th and 12th assignments more sophisticated. They need to add something, complete a different task or do more to achieve mastery of the standard.
I really appreciate the comment. After reviewing a paper that took more than 40 minutes to edit and add motivating comments without killing the spirit of the student, I needed a pick me up!

I was wondering how you scored the journals. I just collected them from students and am having a hard time scoring the bad ones. Some of them clearly put a lot of thought into them and others seem to have hastily thrown them together the day before the due date, but obviously I can't prove that.

A top score is a "5" or an A+.
A 4.8 is an A.
A 4.5 is an A-.
A 4 would be a B.
A 3.7 would be a C.

If the entry is missing, the student earns a 0 on that entry.
When I count up the points, I round up.

*Focus on Topic (Content) - Comprehensive, complete and creative. Main idea stands out and is supported by detailed information.
*Flow and Rhythm (Sentence Fluency) - All sentences sound natural and are easy-on-the-ear when read aloud. Each sentence is clear and has an obvious emphasis. Student selected diction appropriate to the writing task.
*Grammar and Spelling (Conventions) - Writer makes no errors in syntax (grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence structure) that distracts the reader from the content. All names have been double-checked for correct attribution.
*Transitions and Conclusion (Organization) - A variety of thoughtful transitions is used. They clearly show how ideas are connected. The conclusion is strong and leaves the reader with a feeling that he or she understands what the writer is "getting at."

Great question. In the English classroom, it is a bit different than in other classes. It also depends on how much technology the students have access to at home and in their communities.
I have a lab on my floor and 32 laptops on carts. Thus, students can use desk top and laptop computers 1-2 times per week. Most students have a cell phone or a SMARTphone. Seventy percent of our school takes free or reduced lunch. Without our IB program that buses kids in from all over the county, we would be a Title 1 school. I am mindful that all students do not have technology access all the time so I provide phone tutorials, before and after school help and I open the lab early so students can post assignments and view resources.
A Flipped Classroom model started with Math and Science classrooms in wealthier areas of the nation. The idea was to flip the homework to the school setting and post lectures and instruction on blogs or e-learning spaces so students could access them 24/7.
I use Edmodo and post all handouts, PowerPoints, videos, tutorials, etc. there. Edmodo even has stats for the individual student (how frequent he or she is logging in and what is being accessed.) so I adjust resources as needed. A typical day is an opening where I go over the agenda and some whole class instruction (15 minutes max), then a work session (an hour) where students work on reading text or writing together or alone, then a closing where we recap key points of the lesson. When students are working together, I pull them aside to do one on one conferences. It is certainly less teacher-driven. For readings, I offer lots of choice. Most lessons have a problem-solving element so text (informational and literary) is read with a purpose in mind rather than on a timeline or to support the canon.

This Is my first year teaching and my first year teaching Journalism/yearbook. I just got hired this January due to teacher before me leaving.Journalism and yearbook are really new for me. I have really been searching the interent for things to with my kids but no luck .I was hoping that you could really help me .These last couple of weeks have been very stressful. I haven't recieved my first pay check yet so I have been scrambleing around trying to find anything and everything. It would really be helpful if you could send any workseets,lessons,and activites or even give any suggestions . My princiapl has already warned me that people from our district are going to be coming and observing me . So any asistance is grately appreciated.

Hi Deborah! I saw that you've joined up with The Lesson Cloud and here on TPT. I teach Grade 7 and am on TPT, TLC etc... as well. I'm having a HUGE middle years Back To School giveaway/blog hop near the end of August with a fellow middle years blogger/TPT'er. We've got 22+ bloggers/TPT'er all participating so far(all middle years - grade 4-8). I know that you're middle years too - so we'd love to have you join in, if you'd like! People so far have donated items from their stores, shopping sprees - whatever you like, really. In return - hopefully you'll get lots of followers, traffic and views to your TPT store (and blog if you have one.) Debbie Is it possible that you sign up for Facebook? We have a great group of TpT sellers and Kristen Bower, who's an administrator of the Lesson Cloud FaceBook page said that she'd like you to join us. We're all authors on the Lesson Cloud. We post our products there and link them back to our TpT stores. Take a look at the website. We have all grade levels represented there and if you join up, you can post your products on the page and be an author. If you click on Meet the Authors, you'll see all of our blogs that people can click on. Mine is on the right hand side.. Teacher Park. Here's the URL...http://www.thelessoncloud.com/ Being an author doesn't mean you have to write long blog entries. It mostly means you are allowed to post your products there.. Everyone asked me to tell you they like your TpT store but you have to raise your prices.We've all been selling so long that we know that lower prices don't encourage sales... :)

Scipi I'm so glad you gave Debbie those wonderful hints!! Scipi is the BEST! I learned a lot from her when I was new on TpT. By the way, Debbie, I followed you on Pinterest and pinned two of your products to "HighSchoolHerd" where I have pinning rights. It's a collaborative board of high school teachers from TpT so any time you want one pinned on that board, let me know and I can do it for you. A few of the TpT teachers from the Facebook page took a look at your products and really like them. They did say that you should increase your prices. There's a guide that Rachel Lynette created that has suggestions of how much to sell things for. I'll look for it and give you the site so you can see what people are charging. Don't underprice your products. You deserve more for them. I sell more higher priced products than the less expensive ones. Have a great weekend :)

Scipi (TpT Seller) re: Viewing Guide TED Talks- Brian Cox on CERN's Supercollider
I saw your Ruth's posting on the Lesson Cloud Facebook page; so, I thought I would look at your freebie. I also teach math, now on the college level, but I did middle school for several years. Since you are new here are a few suggestions that might help you to better market your products.
Add a second page which is a directions or suggestions page. List several ways you use this product in your classroom. Never assume that a buyer knows how, why, or when to use your product. Use the footer to put the copyright symbol, your name and date of creation on EVERY page. Items, especially free ones, have been "stolen" from TPT and posted on other sites to be sold. You have to protect all of your creations. Also, number your pages.
It is important that we see what others are doing; so, feel free to look at any or all of my freebies listed below to gather some ideas. If you care to, a rating or any feedback you might have would be great.

Ruth has been an angel and I have learned so much- little tweaks to make my curriculum so much better.
I went back to my free one and immediately put in page numbers and a copyright sign. Since I am new, I really had not thought of that. The idea that something that I or anyone else on TpT worked so hard to craft could be sold on another website under someone else’s name is horrible. I do not mind sharing my material with friends but blatant theft is terrible. Wow!
I followed you on Pinterest and also followed you on TpT. I downloaded your recycled treasures lesson, too. This helped me visualize how you do the copyright sign. I also really liked your idea of the clothespins. I think I am going to use that for oral presentations this year. I’m thinking that my students can move the clothes pins as they go then I will have a daily visual count of who still needs to present.
Any other tips, links, ideas or networking advice is sincerely appreciated. I am thrilled to be a part of TpT. What an inspired idea.

Hi Debbie, I tried replying to your note about your sister and you loving science but it wouldn't let me. I think that's only when I download a free product. You get one reply only. Here in the Q/A area, TpT teachers can chat back and forth although it's probably really not for that.

I have a Twitter account but haven't really figured it out yet. I have tons of people following me... I have to get on Twitter. I can't find you on Pinterest, but if you follow me, I'll see you. I use blogger because it's user friendly. A friend of mine gave me a birthday gift which was to have a blog designer design my blog for me. Designing it myself was easy but I couldn't resist her gift. I'll pass your TpT store and Pinterest, etc. accounts along. We middle and high school teachers have an advantage on TpT. There are MANY primary teachers competing so I'm glad I'm not in that market. I'm also an author on several blogs.. Lesson Cloud, Connect-A- Blog, Classroom Freebies and Teacher2Teacher where I post book reviews. Connect A Blog is WordPress and it's been a challenge but I'm getting the hang of it. If you have Facebook, Paul put a TpT page up and it generates a lot of sales. I can invite you into some of the private rooms we have on FB where we network. Sorry this is a rambling note! It's late and I have to finish a press release for a candidate whose team I'm working with for the election this year.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
This is my 23rd year teaching. My husband (also an AP English teacher) and I launched our first son into college this summer. I teach AP English Language and newspaper journalism. Each instructional experience has helped me grow as a teacher- US Peace Corps; Togo (West Africa), inner city Miami, suburban Seattle, ESL in Korea, international school in Colombia, school of choice Miami, Florida Virtual School and now, suburban Atlanta. First, I love them and have been an avid TED Talks podcast subscriber for several years.
