I returned to my Junior High School in Glendale, CA, which is now Toll Middle School (instead of "Junior High"), and taught English for three years. I've taught 7th Grade Regular English and ELD 4 and 8th Grade Regular, Advanced English and ELD 1-2, and 3. I went back to substituting after teaching 3 years full-time but have since been pursuing a writing career. Although I am no longer a classroom teacher, I hope the tests, worksheets, reference sheets, and activities that I had created while I was in the classroom make the days go by a little easier for today's and tomorrow's teachers.
It's been a while since I went through my classroom management class and so I don't remember the theoretical basis for my teaching style, but basically, I am quirky and like to joke around and have fun with my students, but that comes after a mutual respect has been established. I have high behavioral standards as well as classroom rules and procedures that promote responsibility and initiative. Although I do encourage and genuinely listen to students' thoughts, concerns, and opinions, the final decision about anything is made by me; that decision may be influenced by students, but it is still my decision. I make sure my students understand this. I love planning and creating lessons, handouts, presentations, etc. It's always so exciting to plan a lesson that you know will be fun for the students and give them the opportunity to learn something new. I love just talking with my students. We often go off on tangents, but I think it's worth extending the lesson a bit longer and spend time just learning more about each other.

I spent most of my pre-college years in the Glendale Unified School District in California. First at Columbus Elementary, then to Toll Junior High, and finally to Hoover High School. Then it was onward to UC Irvine where I received my B.A. in Classical Civilization (Ancient Greek and Roman history, mythology, art, literature). After graduating from UCI, I attended Cal State Los Angeles for my teaching credential. I will get my Master's at some point, but not just yet...
I belong to a family of teachers: My mom has been a teacher for 20 years, my twin sister is teaching English and History for 6th grade (at a middle school) and my younger sister is finishing up her Bachelor's but is planning on possibly teaching art. My dad even taught as a substitute teacher. It's just our nitch. Although I have decided to pursue a career in writing, I will always be a teacher at heart. Aside from the teaching aspect of me ... I love nature and the outdoors, animals, cooking, gardening, reading fantasy and historical fiction.
