I have taught for two years so far in a junior high school in New York City. My first year I taught 6th grade honors ELA. This year I am teaching honors 7th grade ELA, and beginner/intermediate ELA classes to ESL students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. I also work with my ESL students in a Saturday enrichment program that includes acting lessons.
I use the workshop model of teaching which incorporates a daily mini-lesson and as many student-centered activities as possible. My students have their own independent reading novels at all times, and in class we read mainly short stories and articles. I incorporate reading, writing, and grammar skills into content specific lessons.
