I really like this activity, and hope I get to teach 'Gatsby' in the fall because of it! What I also like is the transferability of the assignment. It can be used with several different pieces of literature as well.

This powerpoint is a great springboard for starting the students. I would like to see the removal of the first person statements and a few other small details are off. For example in slide number 12 the sample shows the phrase "I agree with this statement." ARGGGG- That is the kind of thing I am teaching my students NOT to do! I do however really like slide numbers 16 & 17

A lot of great suggestions on how to capture students' attention and use music to teach self-metaphors, annotation, creating chorus and narrative, rhythm, rhyme, and the list goes on! Teachers can pick and choose the parts of this lesson that are relevant to their curriculum or complete the whole lesson.

I love the idea behind this lesson, but I think it can be explained better in the write-up. The two main parts that could use more detail are the mini-lesson on annotation and the potential mini-lessons on writing: how would you show annotation? Do you have set markings (underline for important things, circles for confusing parts, etc.), would you first do it on a poem you had used before, etc.?
The Do Now seems a little abstract, too. Maybe starting with writing about their mood in general, then the mini-lesson on Simon's metaphors, then re-applying that to their mood would make more sense to students?
Otherwise, brilliant - great aims, excellent use of music in the classroom, a good intro to creative writing processes, and fun. Oh, and I love your rubric. Hope this helps.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
A public school graduate myself, I've spent 6 years teaching high school in NYC, in courses ranging from intensive reading for struggling readers to honors, freshman to seniors. Included in those courses have been a college application preparation component, grammar instruction and arts integration, in addition to the standard literature, vocabulary and writing.
MY TEACHING STYLE
I really enjoy my students and their individuality and try to address that in the way that I plan and teach. I think my teaching style could be classified as progressive with clear structure, but I like to take the best practices and materials of many methods and integrate them into my work.
