I know there's a WWI "Flyboys" movie about Americans who volunteer with the French Lafayette Escadrille, but I didn't know there was a WWII Chi-Chi Jimi flyboys movie. Glad to help. Those in contents without essay writing requirements (and especially administrators) don't have a clue as to how time consuming providing thorough essay feedback is for the APUSH/Dual Credit teacher. But if we don't take time to give that constructive feedback, students won't improve and muddled, ill organized papers take much longer to grade.

Glad you found the file useful. The method is slow initially for students, but once they get the hang of the method they realize they learn more efficiently and effectively long term. I also use color as a memory tool; have students when reviewing their notes to highlight according to PERMS (or SPERM; always gets giggles)--
Political = purple highlighter
Economic = green
Religious = blue
Military = red
Social = yellow or orange
Notes highlighted this way really pay off when students are trying to collect evidence for Free Responses and DBQs.

I just re-read the item listing and realized I didn't mention the clip from "The Wizard of Oz" that I use, from the house landing in Munchkin Land to Dorothy, Scarecrow and Tin Man meeting Lion. I stop the clip as they start dancing down the Yellow Brick Road to Emerald City.

Thanks for the feedback and rating. For over twenty years I've used the sorting activity with every class of every level and students of all ages and once students understand the geography, climate, and topography they "get" the colonial adaptations, regionalism, and sectionalism that evolves.
Even with google earth and global positioning, the longer I teach the more geographically inexperienced my students are; most couldn't fill in a colonial map nor even a fraction of the states on a US map, including the state in which they live! If I take time to fill in that missing content, it aids later learning continuously.
I don't know what age you teach but something else that I've used fifth grade through high school is after map work in which students color New England colonies red for "first Patriot blood spilled," Middle Colonies yellow for "Breadbasket" grain production, and Southern Colonies green for fertile coastal plains, I then encourge them to highlight or underline their notes on each of the colonial regions in the corresponding color. My APUSH students often said how during the May exam they closed their eyes, envisioned the map and instantly recalled the data (facts, events, cause/effect) they needed to answer the question or essay. Consistent use of color is a great memory tool. In fact I just added another download based on highlighting notes according to PERMS (Political, Economic, Religious, Military, and Social) cause/effect. After that, I arrange students in groups of 3, one for each branch eliminated. Each must then summerize to the two other partners the duties of that branch, and why that branch should/could be eliminated. Then together the group predicts what problems would emerge. From there it is easy for students understand that even a branch abdicating its power to another branch can cause great havoc. Then I bring in current events which illustrate a branch enlarging its powers at the expense of the abidicating branch. Right now, there are many (too many) examples of the executive branch expanding its powers b/c of the abdication by Congressional of its powers, all the appointed 40+ czars answerable to no one but the president, for example.

Linsey, a fun learning extension involves pairing students to "invent" or "innovate" a product or service using either horizontal or vertical integration. After determining all the steps necessary, then students create either a computer made flow chart or a poster board flow chart to illustrate those steps and which step "monopoly" is most likely.
