Just an fyi . . . we just learned that the Pittsford library doesn't open tomorrow until 10:00am on the nose, so arriving 5 minutes late is actually better for this event than arriving 5 minutes early. We don't want anyone standing out in the cold waiting for the doors to open. :)

By the way, I'm compiling a contact list for everyone to take home. If you'd like your e-mail included, please drop me a note at literarysherri@gmail.com. Otherwise, I've got your store link, blog, and Pinterest page all included.

See you in the morning! :)

I bought your active verb word search puzzle a while back, and I finally got around to using this with my classes today. Unfortunately I realized that the wrong puzzle is included. The answer key is the correct puzzle with the words from the list, but it is different from the actual puzzle. I would love to get the correct puzzle for the active verbs list and wouldn't mind having the word list that goes with the puzzle that is currently included in the package. :-)

I just purchased your "Create a Book for a Younger Reader" project. I'm wondering how to help my kids understand that there needs to be a connection between the five big story ideas. I'm afraid they're going to just talk about five totally unrelated things in their books have no sort of related summary for it all. What suggestions/resources can you offer to make this more meaningful when it comes to quality book writing?

Thanks Megan and great question! I do it this way -- I describe a train on the tracks and have them create a graphic organizer with five boxcars on tracks. Then they add a big picture idea into each boxcar - with caboose at the end -- where all ideas meet up to create one final takeaway at the end. They love the visuals -- and I have products for this -- but you can create the visual to make it work just as well:-)

I am working on a product now with 100 graphic organizers to make these things easier for writers, and to master common core standards. Hope to have it out in next 2 days -- but I've been also preparing for a global leader summit - so am cris-crossing my focus.

Don't hesitate to email me if I can help further -- my email is at bottom of product:-) Best, Ellen

I have a question re our Pinning Party. Compass Publishing, the publisher of my teacher resource, The House of Comprehension, sells his authors' books on TpT http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Compass-Publishing. Both the digital and the print copy of my book are in his store. Could I offer these links for the others to pin, even though they are not from my store? I would dearly love for my book to get pinned...alot!
Thank you so much.

I love that you have started this for secondary teachers-much needed. Also, I love your products as developing critical thinking skills is a top priority in my products. Your products are wonderful role models.

Great question Megan - and I think I will add these specific examples to clarify in my intro - because you asked.

Students love this grammar baseball game because they play their way into learning CCSS required sentence constructs, transitions, parts of speech, word agreement, punctuation, word usage, active and passive verbs, correct grammar use in edits and more. Does that answer?

On a similar note -- there are cool games to learn rhetorical devices at http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Play-Rhetorical-Device-Baseball-Game-Learn-through-Fun-CCSS-Aligned-996332 and additional grammar games listed there too.

I saw examples in the preview for 9-12. Do you have tasks broken down for 6-8?
July 9, 2013 Report inappropriate comment

Ellen Weber  (TpT Seller)
Great question Bonnie -- yes the exact MI Tasks here are very often used at the 6-8 groups - and are very successfully received.

It's true I did not specify the CCSS alignment for middle. Reason? So often the secondary student gets left behind in lectures and misses out on active tasks -- where they can investigate for deeper understanding.

For that reason, I like to align for older students to help them by way of support. I use these at college with much enthusiasm from students also. They are designed to give choices at each level.

These tasks are often used as posters in the middle schools also - and in that way students can see icons to choose different intelligences they want to use in their projects.

There are many charts included to map their way, and they are offered many choices -- but given guidance to see clearly what kinds of tasks fit each intelligence.

They love the choices and sometimes create MI tasks far beyond these suggested lists, once they get used to the posters:-).

What the materials do at middle school is allow learners to see the content from diverse angles and learn to navigate their way with different thinkers.

Imagine Bonnie, the gridlock leaders can sidestep when they learn skills to navigate many ways to see content.

All to say, yes, these materials are designed and ready to use at the middle age -- but specifically aligned to support secondary CCSS classes past lectures and into active explorations.

If I can help you further -- please do not hesitate to email me at eweber1@frontiernet.net. Best, Ellen

We are actually writing a grant to aquire materials for us to use in our elementary classrooms. We will be looking at your materials to see which ones can translate to younger students, or can help us on our quest to learn how to be better teachers for our learners. Have you considered creating materials for younger learners? I would be happy to offer some insights, as I'm sure many TpT collaborators would also, if you should ever be interested. Wow -- Karen -- this is such great news and I will help you to convert any that I can. All the brain facts, prompts and tasks do apply to all ages -- because I use them with my bright little 2-year old grandson:-)

You are so kind Karen, and I value your collegiality!

On the question of developing for young children -- (I love all ages and have taught younger at times)

The only reason I work endlessly for HS and college is because these ages have been so often put out to dry in the learning system. They can and want to learn and we work against their brains daily! We really need brain based at all levels -- we all have a great deal to teach and learn from one another.

MEETING YOU and others in this community restores my faith that we can DO THIS TOGETHER. Let's keep talking. My email is eweber1@frontiernet.net.

Greetings Farrah, Please do know that no items at this site bear label of others -- and I have created and published original whole brain learning and assessment materials for 30 years.

As a university ethics prof :-) I highly respect copyright -- and all my materials are completely original - and all are my own creation.

My Mita Manifesto located at http://www.brainleadersandlearners.com/change/mita-brain-manifesto/ will show my work with teens and adult - and will show its longevity:-)

As the director of an International Brain Center, I work with teens and adults using whole brain materials this win international awards at that level.

My whole brain leader materials use a full brain, integrated approach, found in the Mita Manifesto for Renewal at http://www.brainleadersandlearners.com/change/mita-brain-manifesto/ .

They are not a label -- nor are they anything but my own materials - and I encourage you to check any of these out. Since I have never seen your materials - I trust you will see dynamic differences.

For instance, I also sell Multiple Intelligence materials -- as I develop activities that engage more capabilities across the human brain. Please check my materials carefully to see I have never heard of your WBT materials -- nor do I intend to use others' ideas! We consider ethical matters of deep import here at the brain center.

Hopefully this note will clarify Farrah, and I wish you the very best with your good work! We need many researchers and developers in the field to help mine hidden and unused talents of teens and young adults.

Renee, Please accept my apology that I did not see this question until now. The posters are digital, and so you can copy these at the size that works best for your use. Hope that helps -- but please do not hesitate to contact me at eweber1@frontiernet(dot)net if I can offer further facts. Best, Ellen

Ellen,
I just want to touch base to make sure you were still participating in the Middle School Conference Opportunity! Please take a look at the thread in the forum to get the latest updates. And if you haven't sent your conference fee, please do so as soon as possible!
Thanks,
Michele

Hi Michele, So sorry you did not get my email - it may be in your spam folder. I'd been hoping to travel to the conference to meet up as I had another engagement not far away. That has not happened, I've been sick and am just now recovering (and catching up) so I will not be able to make the group.

All the best -- and it will be fun to catch up at a later date, Best, Ellen

Diana Bailey  (TpT Seller) re: Talent Inventory - Link Learners to Lessons
Hi Ellen, appreciated your comment about the Ottawa lesson plan (one of my freebies). Wonder if you could expand on it a bit? I did write it as informational text for ESL - a slightly different approach to non-ESL classrooms. My experience is mostly there (HS), though years ago I taught middle school as well. Diana.

I'll try Diana, Great stuff - and it gets a solid 4 from me.

Just one wee thought - I like to find cool hooks between the content and the learner where possible. Was thinking that your materials could do that through questions that related the facts to what students care about, do and hope to learn more about. I call these 2 footed questions -- and there are terrific examples about how to link content to students as a way to raise curiosity. Make sense?

I just visited your store and read your profile. Wow! You have quite a resume. I'm impressed. I couldn't find a link to your blog, however. Maybe I just missed it. Could you send me the url?

Thanks!

Many thanks for your kind words, Dianne, and I was so glad to see how much we have in common, and also to see work you do so well. Yet there are differences that would be mutually beneficial in a circle of like minded faculty who see progress in the field and are still open to help it happen:-)

I am still so new at TPT that I have no idea how to attach my other sites to the TPT site - and am still trying to figure out how to add a banner:-)

Here though are my sights:

I blog at http://www.brainleadersandlearners.com/
My web site is http://mitaleadership.com/

Hope to continue to persue this possibility at TPT and in fact just became a member -- even though I am a newbie:-) You?

Great question Judi and your thoughtfulness allowed me to go back to the item and clarify with these opening words. "Here are 10 tasks your students can do to actively engage their brains more in listening for deeper understanding on any topic. In addition you will get 10 brain facts stated in clear language that you and your students will enjoy - to reboot listening skills for tangible benefits."

Thanks Judi - I am so excited to be part of this community. Please do not hesitate to ask if I can clarify further.

Can you tell me your web site address as I cannot find under the search. I want to see what you are posting:-) Good luck with your own work! Best, Ellen
