I have downloaded many of your free ppt and I have loved them! I decided to take the plunge and buy something from TPT for the first time. I bought the figurative lang. ppt but all I can download is the preview, will I get the whole lesson? How do I get the whole lesson?

Glad you like the Powerpoints! As I look at what I have uploaded, the preview is 11 slides, and the full version (which I just taught from again this week!) is 47 slides. If you're having trouble with downloading it, it's a small enough file that I should be able to email it to you. Let me know if you continue to have problems and I'll send it your way!

I was wondering which you would suggest to teach first? Nonfiction text features or text structure?
January 19, 2012
Emily Kissner

Hello! I like to start with text features, and then go on to text structure. The features are such a great way to get kids into a text to preview and activate their background knowledge. Sometimes the features will even give a clue to the text structure. Hope this helps!

re: Problem and Solution Texts for Teaching Text Structure
Emily,
Do you think the text structure units you developed has articles and activities challenging enough for sixth grades. I just want to know if there is one article on a sixth grade level or more for the units.
January 11, 2012
Emily Kissner
(TpT Seller)
Hello! Several of the articles were written especially for sixth graders. Here are the ones that are best for sixth grade. In chronological order, "Whoopie Wars" and "From Steel to Skyscrapers"; in cause and effect, "Mysterious Milk Sickness", in compare/contrast, "Etiquette at the Chinese Table", and in problem/solution, "The Biotic Index". Each of these has been used either by me when I taught sixth grade, or by sixth grade teachers that I know. Hope this helps!

re: Differentiated Spelling Program
Hi Emily,
I began your differentiated spelling program today, and I have a couple questions.
First, are kids expected to look up definitions for all the words, both spelling and vocabulary?
Second, do you give two different spelling tests? One for spelling group, one for vocab?
I'm a little unclear.
thanks!
Mary
January 4, 2012
Emily Kissner
(TpT Seller)
I don't have kids look up the definitions to words. Usually, I'll say, "Are there any words that you aren't familiar with?" and we'll talk about those words. Students often draw pictures or write notes directly on the spelling sheet.
I do give two tests, but concurrently. The kids learn quickly to listen to the correct list. "Word #1 for spelling is.... Now word #1 for vocabulary is..." If kids have questions or missed a word, I have them save it to the end. Then...the vocabulary group doesn't have as many words, but I take the test out of the same total # of points, so their extra challenge is leveled out. Hope this helps!

Hi Emily,
I'm so excited to have discovered your site. I've even ordered your books off of Amazon! I really appreciate how you break everything down, and it corresponds with my own philosophy and methods of teaching. However, you've done all the hard work in organizing everything, and I so appreciate it!
My question is about spelling. I teach fourth grade and use Words Their Way, a program I love but is soooo much work. I have 3 different spelling groups, 3 lists, 3 different homework packets, and 3 tests. I love your differentiated spelling program and I intend to use it starting in January.
Where do you recommend I begin? I counted 16 weeks worth of lessons. Is that right? Personally, I don't think you can review spelling enough, so I wouldn't mind beginning with vowel spelling patterns. What do you think?
Thanks for your time!
December 21, 2011
Emily Kissner
(TpT Seller)
Hello! I'm glad that you like the differentiated spelling. As for where to begin, if you have kids in Within-Word patterns still, it might be best to start with the long vowel patterns. If all of your kids are past that stage on the Words Their Way developmental inventory, you may be able to pick up with the lessons past the long vowels.
I usually run my spelling Monday-Monday, so that kids have the weekend to study. In the spring, our schedule is so broken up with testing that I like to extend the lessons in partial weeks. We might act out words or review past words in class in extra classes.
Hope this helps! Feel free to write to me at elkissn@yahoo.com if you have more questions. Have a good holiday!

re: The Magic School: Story for Making Inferences
How do you print the pages so that they are in booklet format?
November 5, 2010
Emily Kissner
(TpT Seller)
Hello! This book works on the same principle as the Reading A-Z.com double-sided books. The pages are out of order so that they will be correct front to back. I print the pages single-sided and then take them to the photocopier. You may have to play around with the settings a bit depending on your photocopier. I put them horizontally in the top duplex tray, face up. Then I hit "1-sided to 2-sided" and the copier does the rest. I always do a test run before I make multiple copies!
If you were trying to print them double-sided, make sure to choose "short-edge binding" on the double-sided menu.
I hope this helps!

OMG!!! this is wonderful;!! I love it....can you please explain your " clipboard cruise" method to grade this??
May 26, 2010
Emily Kissner
(TpT Seller)
The "clipboard cruise" is a quick way to give instant feedback to students. While they are reading, I simply go around and score their work. (We do standards-based grading now, so my students can get an E for Exceeding Expectations, M for Meeting, or N for Not Meeting.) Instead of writing comments, I tell the student why they received their score and write it down on my clipboard. I usually do this on Fridays and extend reading time a little so that I can see everyone.
I've posted more on independent reading and reading in general on my blog, http://emilykissner.blogspot.com. Feel free to stop by!

Emily,
I love your materials and will definitely use many of them with my grade 5's. Right now I am working on before, during, and after reading strategies and came across your plan, "The Adventures of Isabel" which fits perfectly, however, where do I find the poem???? Thx, Diane H
Looking forward to hearing from you soon. dianehull@rogers.com

Hello! I'm glad that you're enjoying the materials. "The Adventures of Isabel" is by Ogden Nash. You can find it in book form or online by searching "The Adventures of Isabel Ogden Nash".

Emily, I was trying to create a powerpoint for my students about text structure and I found the ones that you had created. Thank you so much! You created and explained text structure in a way that my students will understand and be able to practice too!

Emily, Thank you so much for posting your materials. I've downloaded them all and am going to buy your books. I'm a teacher at a parochial school, so state testing isn't a concern for me. I do have to get my students ready for private high school entrance exams though. Last year some of my students struggled with inference, so I am going to target inference strategies more this year. Thank you again. Betsy

Betsy, I'm so glad that you are finding the resources helpful. I just wrote about inferences over at my blog, http://emilykissner.blogspot.com/, with a link to a story that I wrote to help students make inferences. Thank you so much--I hope that you have a good start to your school year!

Emily- Just wanted to let you know that I recently bought your 2 books and I'm loving them. They have given me so many ideas to use w/ various kids I'm tutoring this summer who just don't seem "to get it" when it comes to comprehension. You have saved me so much time researching different strategies and techniques to try with these students b/c it's now all laid out nice and neat in your books. Keep writing. We love them. Jen

I don't have a question, but just wanted to tell you how utterly fantastic your lessons and materials are. They are clever, colorful, simple to understand and extremely thorough in their explanations. I am a special education teacher working with students who need these thorough explanations and your lessons provide just that. I am very impressed with your work and downloaded EVERTHING you have posted. Thank you so much for offering them as free resources, I would have gladly paid for these but your generousity is very much appreciated. Thanks

Is "The All-American Slurp" a short story? Where may I find this? Thanks!

"The All-American Slurp" is a short story by Lensey Namioka. You can find it in many reading anthologies. Here is a link to a book on Amazon that has it:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0440202086/lenseynamiokweb
If you're looking for a story that you can use right away, I have a short story that I wrote, with activities, listed under "Using Retelling to Build Comprehension" for free on the Teachers Pay Teachers website. The story is called "The Magic Key" and is a realistic fiction story.
Hope this helps! Good luck with your planning!

Hello Emily,
I am very impressed with your free download on teaching Personal Narratives. Your work is definitely high quality and shows evidence of originality and real "field experience." Because of the quality of your offering, I feel you are the person to whom I should ask this question. I am a teacher with 19 years experience and am interested in writing a book (or books). Can you spare a minute and tell me some things to do to get started? Should I write first, or have a publisher first? Who supported you in your book writing adventures? Did you have colleages as partners, did you create a "pilot" in your classroom, or did you research another classroom or school? I suspect that your ideas came from your excellent teaching practice. In that case, how did you get a publisher to get on board with you? Thank you so much, and thank you for your high quality and obviously authentic plan you submitted for teaching personal narrative. This is the BEST thing I've seen to help kids along in peer conferencing. It is a very difficult thing for them to do and they need lots of modeling. Your scripted scenario between students is such a great idea. Thanks again!

Writing is definitely an adventure! I must admit that I started writing a little out of spite and malice--I started researching to prove someone wrong. And then I realized what amazing stuff was out there! I was lucky with the summarizing book because there was just not much out there on the topic. So, the first piece of advice is to come up with a topic that is different from what's already out there. I suggest that you go ahead and start writing before you get a publisher. Write a strong Table of Contents, the chapter that you think best captures your book, and a proposal outlining what your book is, your target audience, and how it is different from what else is on the market. Then look at publishers of your favorite books and find their submission guidelines. Also, if you can find a link to science in what you teach, the NSTA publications are wonderful to work with and a great way to gain confidence. My writing comes from my classroom; I see something that's going wrong and try to fix it. I hope this helps!
