Cell Theory NGSS MS-LS1-1 Amplify Supplement Metabolism No Microscope Needed

Many middle school life science programs introduce cells, but NGSS Standard MS-LS1-1 requires students to conduct an investigation and provide evidence that living things are made of cells. In many curricula, including Amplify, this standard is not always addressed through a direct investigation. This resource was designed specifically to fill that gap by providing a structured, student self-guided investigation that helps students gather evidence and construct a scientific explanation suppor

Experience

Science Investigation Station was created by a middle school science teacher with a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction who is currently pursuing an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction. After years in the classroom, I began designing investigations and student-led activities that help students think like scientists rather than simply memorize facts. Every resource in this shop is classroom tested and designed to help teachers run engaging investigations with minimal preparation. My materials focus on helping students observe evidence, ask meaningful questions, and construct explanations. These skills are central to NGSS-aligned science instruction and real scientific thinking. These lessons are designed for real classrooms and real teachers who want students actively investigating, analyzing evidence, and discovering how science works.

Teaching style

My teaching style focuses on helping students learn science through investigation, observation, and evidence-based reasoning. Instead of simply memorizing facts, students are guided to ask questions, analyze data, and construct explanations based on what they discover. In middle school, I believe it is especially important for students to build confidence in their ability to think independently. Students are given structured opportunities to analyze information, make decisions about their thinking, and explain their ideas using evidence. These experiences help them develop both scientific understanding and the confidence to take ownership of their learning. In my classroom, students act as scientists. They examine models, analyze observations, discuss ideas, and use evidence to support their thinking. Lessons are designed to be interactive, structured, and accessible so that all students can participate in scientific reasoning. The resources in this shop reflect that same approach. Activities are student-centered, investigation-based, and designed to help students build independence, confidence, and strong scientific thinking skills while still being practical and manageable for teachers to implement in real classrooms.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I began my teaching career in elementary school, teaching all subjects in both fourth and fifth grade classrooms. That experience helped me understand how students develop foundational skills in reading, writing, and critical thinking before transitioning into middle school science. One of the most rewarding parts of teaching middle school science is watching students realize they are capable of thinking like scientists. Some of my favorite moments happen when students who once felt unsure begin confidently explaining their ideas, asking deeper questions, and supporting their thinking with evidence. Over the years I have developed investigations and student led activities that help make those moments possible. Many of the resources in this shop grew directly out of lessons designed for my own classroom. As a teacher with a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction who is currently pursuing an Ed.D., I am passionate about creating science experiences that build both understanding and confidence. My goal is always to help students feel capable, curious, and proud of the thinking they do in science.

My own education history

I earned my master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction, where I focused on how students learn and how teachers can design meaningful learning experiences. I am currently pursuing an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction. My doctoral work focuses on improving science instruction and helping teachers implement practices that support deeper student thinking and engagement. My academic background, combined with years of classroom experience teaching both elementary and middle school students, informs the resources I create. Each lesson is designed to support strong instruction, clear student thinking, and meaningful science learning.

Additional biographical information

I have always enjoyed helping students discover that science is something they can understand and explore, not just memorize. Some of my favorite classroom moments happen when students realize they can figure something out on their own and confidently explain their thinking. Before teaching middle school science, I taught all subjects in fourth and fifth-grade classrooms. That experience helped me understand how important it is to build strong foundational skills that support deeper learning in later grades. Today I continue to refine and create lessons based on what works best with real students. Many of the investigations and activities in this shop were developed in my own classroom and adjusted over time to help students think more independently and engage more deeply with scientific ideas. I enjoy creating resources that make science more approachable, interactive, and meaningful for both students and teachers.
