TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I began teaching at an all boys junior high school in Harlem, then taught social studies in a small town in California and wound up at a wealthy community on the North Shore of Long Island. My teaching style was based on Inquiry approaches to Social Studies and English. My role as a teacher was a mentor who assisted students to inquire, identify issues, and explore new approaches at problem solving. In the 1960s, my high school students set up a Freedom School in Mississippi, walked in Harlem rent strikes, held all night discussions on the Vietnam War, and invited Socialists to present their ideas. I taught college for forty-four years and worked with about 12,000 teachers, many of whose ideas are in the books on Inquiry Learning and Humor. I taught classes on Secondary Methods and Elementary School Social Studies methods with the goal of offering -- Practical, Common Sense, Realistic approaches to stimulating student critical and creative thinking.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I obtained a BA from City College of New York. A Masters Degree in History from the University Of Paris, a Masters Degree in History from Columbia University, a Ph.D. in Conflict Resolution from NYU. I taught secondary school for ten years, helped found the New City School in St. Louis which Howard Gardner says is among the few which follow his ideas and helped found a Holocaust Center. I was on the Editorial Board of Social Education, the magazine for Social Studies teachers, and have published several books and numerous articles on topics ranging from humor to the history of crime, to critical and creative thinking. I studied creative thinking under William Gordon, inventor of Synectics, studied future thinking under Ken Craver, the Monsanto Corporation's future thinker, and spent a summer at Yad Vashem studying the Holocaust. I initiated the first program for returning Vietnam war veterans to become teachers--VAULT. I am Professor Emeritus from Webster University in St. Louis, have taught at Brooklyn College, at the University of Missouri and community colleges.
