Hi Gay,
I just purchased and downloaded your resource on The Magic Tree House - Thanksgiving on Thursday. I cannot find the interactive quizzes on your website, bookunitsteacher.com. When I tried the link in the resource, http://bookunitsteacher.com/onlinemagicthanksgiving/thanksgiving on thursday.htm, it went to the username/password page and when I entered the username and password, it said it was not found on the server. Please advise. Thank you.

Unfortunately the website is extremely sensitive. Even if you put a space after the username or password, you can not get in. Because of this I recommend that you type the username and password in place of copying and pasting. Be sure to watch for capital letters as well. I hope this works, but if you still have trouble please e-mail me at teachwithgaymiller@gmail.com.

Hi, Gay! My students and I LOVE your lap books. My students noticed two typing mistakes in the American Revolution lap book. On page 54, you have Molly Pitchers name as Polly and on the information part of Nathan Hale, it says Hal instead of Hale. I told the kids I would pass along the information to you. Thanks for great products!!

Good Morning Gay!

I have been doing your MTH Unit: Hour of the Olympics with my kiddos and we noticed a mistake. On the Chapter 9 page there are no questions to be found in chapters 7, 8 & 9. We found examples of question in Chapters 6 & 10 though. Please feel free to double check us, but if you do find an example would you please email us back so we (I) know where to look in the future.

Thanks so much for such a great unit and for your time in this matter!

I looked at both Chapter 9 vocabulary and Chapter 9 comprehension questions and they go along with the material in Chapter 9. Please send me an e-mail at teachwithgaymiller@gmail.com, so I can figure out what I need to do to make this the best unit possible for you.

Hi Gay,
I have a question about your interactive grammar organizers. I am a German teacher and would love to edit these for use with my students - it's often when learning another language when students realize things they don't know about their native language. If I understand correctly, the files are PDFs and thus can't be edited. Am I correct on this, and if so, could you create an editable version that could be used by world languages teachers like me? Thanks so much!

I am looking for an online resource for chapter quizzes for 3rd-4th grade level novels. I am not in need of the entire unit. I had used your book unit website several years back, and loved it! It had a range of books, both of reading level and topic. Is there anyway to purchase access to just the quizzes? I had used this to keep my unmotivated readers reading. Unlike end of book quizzes like AR or Book Adventure, the chapter quizzes rewarded the students after only several pages. It helped my readers build their stamina when reading to self.

Hi Meri,

I have the Daniel Boone PowerPoint in an area on the website that is not password protected, and the PowerPoint that goes along with the lessons from The Cay unit in the password protected area. The information you need to get to the password protected site is in the unit.

Unfortunately, the website is super sensitive with the password. I recommend that you type it instead of copying and pasting because an extra space after the password will keep you from getting in.

Please e-mail if you have trouble getting to what you need.

I have the Common Core Standard listed on each constructive response question. At the beginning of the paragraph unit section I have a chart listing each standard taught in each lesson. (mostly W. 2 a-f). I have done the same thing in the figurative language section. You will find a chart prior to the lessons listing which standard is taught in each lesson (mostly RL.4) If you need more information send me an e-mail at teachwithgaymiller@gmail.com and I can send you a copy of these charts.

Would you happen to have units for the following:

I purchased your Hatchet Guide and it worked really well for me. Some things I purchased here by other teachers for A Wrinkle in Time were disappointing. I'm hoping you have other guides that aren't listed. I'm a first year teacher and your guide was super-helpful.

Yes, I think this would be a good unit for esl. The unit has comprehension questions to determine if the students are understanding the text. Also, the skills in this unit center around vocabulary including:
o Context Clues
o Prefixes
o Suffixes
o Root Words
o Analogies
o Connotation

The preview for this unit includes everything for Chapters 1-2 including vocabulary practice, comprehension questions, constructive response questions, and the first skill lesson so that you can try it out with your students to make sure it is a good fit before purchasing.

Hi Stefania,

The unit has what I call "Lesson Plans at a Glance." There is a one page table with the vocabulary word(s), reading pages numbers and quiz, constructive response question(s), skill pages, and activities dividing the book up into 9 segments. This unit also has mini posters for the skill lessons (three for each lesson - Common Core Standard, Essential Question, and Lesson Goal).

This is a comprehensive unit. If you complete each activity, you will not need to add anything else.

If you would like to see the "Lesson Plans at a Glance" page drop me an e-mail, and I will send it to you.

I hope this helps.

Hi Kristin,

I just doubled checked and the link is working. The username and password are super sensitive. You must be sure watch for capitals, no extra spaces, etc. Even if you place a space after the password, you will not get in. I tell everyone to type, in place of copying and pasting, the username and password because of this. If these suggestions don't work for you, please e-mail me, and I will send you the quizzes through e-mail. I'm sorry the site is so finicky. Please let me know how it goes.

I just checked the 6 links on generators and careers. Three out of the six are still working. I am removing the ones that are no longer active. Thank you again for making me aware.

Hi Gay,
I recently bought your Hatchet unit, and, I must say, it is of very good quality. Some of the links will not open, however: namely. the vocabulary word webs, and the cause and effect (both from smart notebook). I also found a page on the web made by you that had wilderness survival and plane safety, etc. I am able to open the information, but not the quizzes. Is there any way you would be able to send me new links for the above, or direct me to the proper websites for the survival quizzes?

Thank you,

Hi Kathy,

Here is a link where you can find safety quizzes for a plane emergency, being lost in the woods, lightning, and a tornado: http://www.mce.k12tn.net/survival/hatchet/hatchet.htm
They were created in 2000, so the technology is very simple. They are on a website that I no longer maintain, so I can't update them to a newer version.

The two Smart Notebook links are opening on my computer. I'm not sure if we are using the same version of Smart Notebook. I'm using Version 10. If you would like to e-mail me, I can send you the files. Maybe that would help.

Hi Diana,

I'm sorry you're having trouble. I'm tickled you have a TPT page started. I wish you the best!!

You will need to save your files as pdf files. This is really simple. In Word, click the "File" button at the top left corner of the screen. Then select "Save as." When the box comes up you will see two places across the bottom where you can select options. The first is where you type the name of your file. Directly under this, click the "Save as Type" box. A drop down box with options will appear. In the drop down box select PDF.

When you save a file as a PDF, it looks the same on all computers. Word files change from computer to computer.

Good Luck! Let me know if I can help you some more.

Did you include the answers to the open ended questions for How To Eat Fried Worms? I do not see them in my packet.

Hi Denise,
Answers to the multiple choice questions are on page 119 and answers to the constructive response questions begin on page 120. The short answer questions are the same questions as the multiple choice just in a different format, so I did not include an answer key for them.

Hi there!
I am thrilled to use your Hatchet unit with my fifth graders. We have 1:1 Chromebooks and I bought the unit with the intent of utilizing the interactive online quizzes. However, when I use the login and password provided to access them, I receive an error message. (Not Found

The requested URL /onlinehatchet/h was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.)

I was hoping you could help me out with this! Thanks for a great unit!

Hi,
I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble. I have not used Chromebooks, so I can't answer any questions specific to them. Our sixth graders all have iPads, and I know the quizzes work just find using them.

Have you tried logging onto the quizzes on your computer? The password is super sensitive. Even adding a space afterwards will keep you from getting in.

Also, I just checked with Google Analytics to see if there is a problem with the password on my end. In the last 30 days, 1783 people have logged in successfully.

If you would like to e-mail me at teachwithgaymiller@gmail.com, I can send you the quizzes in a zipped file.

Sorry, I could not be more helpful.

You need four cakes. I usually buy four pound cakes that have been baked in loaf pans. If you bake them yourself, you will need to use two cake mixes to make four cakes. The key is to make sure they are baked in loaf pans so that they are to correct shape. I usually place the four cakes on four different pieces of aluminum foil-covered cardboard, so that I can divide the class into four groups. Each group decorates one cake.

Students icing the cake. They use mini marshmallows for the parapet, M&M's for stones, and fruit roll-ups for windows.

Once all cakes are decorated, the four cakes are placed together to form a square. You can make a drawbridge from any type of rectangle-shaped cookies.

Students are happy without the four towers. If you choose to make them, you will need to pour part of the cake batter into 4 flat bottomed ice cream cones and bake. You can icing them after baking or dip them into melted chocolate.

Take lots of pictures. ;>)

Do you let each child make their own lap book or do you pre-make them? I am very excited about these resources!

My students make their own lap books. I do cut out the organizers for them using a paper cutter. I have found that I can cut out multiple copies at once in just minutes. This saves tons of class instructional time.

The biggest problem I have is students like to use a bunch of glue. You will need to practice how to apply use a dab (Elmers is the way to go.) before you begin working on file folders or notebooks which can be ruined. Teach students how to use glue on something that won't matter if they mess up first.

Good luck! I have found making organizers with students a lot of fun as well as educational.

You are welcome. My students love making interactive organizers. . . . so much better than textbook worksheets. My plans are to continue making them through American history.

I definitely want to know how it goes with your class. You can e-mail me at teachwithgaymiller@gmail.com.

I am loving this product! Great work:) I do have one question though.....can you let me know which explorers of the new world are included in this lap book? I'm looking for something that covers the Vikings, Marco Polo, Columbus, Vespucci, Magellan.... Thanks so much! I've already added your 13 Colonies lap book to my cart as well:)

Hi Colette,
I have one organizer titled, "Who Discovered America?" that speaks of the Vikings and Vespucci. There is a full mini book with 16 pages about Columbus. In this mini book, Marco Polo is mentioned in that his book about his travels created an interest for Columbus to find a route to the Indies. The staggered flip and explorers cards contain information on the following:
Coronado, Cabot, Marquette and Jolliet, Cartier, de Soto, Balboa, Pizarro, Drake, LaSalle, Champlain, Hudson, Verrazano, and Cortez. Sorry, I did not include Magellan.

The 13 colonies is my newest item. I just put it on TPT yesterday.

I just purchased your Grammar Unit and am not seeing the pages that would be glued onto the folders. For example, on the Pronouns intro page, which shows the layout of the section, there is a pronoun sheet that gives an overview of the part of speech. Each part of speech shows this on the into page; however, they are not included in the unit that I downloaded. Can you let me know if I'm missing something? That's the main reason that I purchased the unit. The pages I'm describing almost look as though they are flow charts and you had used a bright color to highlight around the boxes. Thanks!

The pages which are on the top of each folder which look like flow charts with the highlighting, I am calling Parts of Speech Posters, are included twice, once with blank spaces in which students fill in answers and once with the answers completed. You will find these on pages 9-24 of the unit. I just downloaded the product from TPT to make sure I uploaded the correct version, and the product looks fine. You can e-mail me at teachwithgaymiller@gmail.com if you are still having trouble.
