Hi Allen! I instruct my students to write one to three sentences using every word in the concept circles. Any student answer would be acceptable, as long as they use the words in a correct manner. An example of a correct answer for the first word circle is: "Organisms maintain a steady body temperature through shivering, goosebumps, panting, and sweating." An example for the second circle is: "The body maintains a steady level of glucose in the blood through a negative feedback loop. This doesn't work in people with diabetes because they don't produce or respond to insulin." An example for the third circle is: "The kidneys and the nervous system work together to maintain homeostasis by regulating osmolarity." I hope the lesson works well for you!

Grace,

I really like your Biology unit, however as I preview the text and ppts there seem to be instructions missing. For example, there are no instructions in the pkg on how to work the vocabulary origami. There are several other instances where you have provided materials but I can't find the explanation.

Thanks

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I'm sorry you've had difficulty with my product! As for your question regarding the vocabulary origami, it works like the fortune tellers middle schoolers make to distract themselves in class. I have detailed instructions that I include with purchase of the vocabulary origami alone- I didn't realize that I neglected to include them with purchase of the entire unit. If you email me at my personal email - gpokela@gmail.com - I would be more than happy to send you the instructions and any other explanations or materials you need. Happy Teaching! -Ms. Pokela

Hi Monica-
You can use absolutely any items, but I always make sure I use fire (because kids often think it's alive, and it's not) and seeds (because kids often think it's not alive, and it is.) Other things that I have used are plants, wind-up toys, a hamster, an insect, a stuffed animal, moldy bread, a remote-control car, a rock, a piece of wood, a plastic plant, other toys.

Another question: Is there anyway you can post the names of the labs you provide in this lab package? There are only 3 labs posted for your name, so I am interested in what topics your labs cover. Thanks.

Sure! TPT isn't letting me download the file, so this is what I believe is there. If you decide to purchase the zip file, and anything is missing, just let me know. I'll re-upload it and press the "revised" button so you can download it again.

The labs are:
Lab 1- Safety Cartoon (about lab safety)
Lab 2-Measuring and making graphs
Lab 3- Making connections (This is a NYS required lab that I modified)
Lab 4- Making connections part 2 (ibid)
Lab 5- Letter "e" lab (microscope practice, this is a lab you can find a number of places online. I modified it to fit my lab format)
Lab 6- Cheek Cell Investigation
Lab 7- Food nutrient tests
Lab 8- Properties of catalase
Lab 9- How does temperature affect diffusion
Lab 10-Rate of photosynthesis (I never finished modifying this lab, because my elodea died! But it's a good template.)
Lab 11-Osmosis in onion cells (A NYS required lab that I modified)
Lab 12- Diffusion through a membrane (ibid)
Lab 13- Earthworm and frog dissection pre-lab
Lab 14- Earthworm dissection
Lab 15- Bullfrog dissection
Lab 16- DNA extraction
Lab 17- Relationships and biodiversity (Another NYS lab that I modified.)
Lab 18- Beaks of finches lab (ibid)
(19 was Regent's practice)
Lab 20- Owl pellet dissection

Other labs included-
The Chesterton's baby- a blood-typing lab
Who Burgled the Bibermans? A forensic science lab involving testing fake urine
Pineapple Enzymes experiment
Penny Genetics (This is a PDF available for free online- I didn't alter it)
and
Fetal Pig Dissection.

It also includes a powerpoint to assist you in doing the Relationships and biodiversity lab if you choose not to use materials for this lab.

=)

They're all word documents. A couple of PDFs that I got for free online and did not write or alter are also included.

Dear Grace,

My name is Jack Dennison. I am the Editor-in-Chief of www.FunnelBrain.com, an educational website. I am writing to you because the quality of the work you have posted to PTP distinguishes you as a talented author. I am looking for teacher-authors to create custom study review materials for FunnelBrain (on a paid basis, of course).

These study materials would take the form of online flashcards, quizzes, and study guides for high school and college level courses, as well as for certain standardized exams such as the GMAT, the SAT or the GRE. We are also interested in lesson plans built around activities that can take place on www.FunnelBrain.com.

If you are interested in a paid writing assignment, please email me at jack@funnelbrain.com, and I will respond with details on the available assignments. In the meantime, please feel free to browse FunnelBrain.com.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,
Jack Dennison
