Jen,
I was wondering if there was a way I could e-mail you personally regarding a question I posed and your response from February. I would prefer not to address it publicly, if that is possible. If not I completely understand. Just so there is no misundestanding, it is all very positive!
Thanks in advance,

I recently purchased your "Common Core Reading: Comprehension Strategy Sheets for K-2 Fiction Standards". While looking for graphic organizers for informational text, I came across your "Hello Common Core Reading BUNDLE: RL & RIT Packs {K-2}". Is there any way to convert the pack I purchased to the bundle and then charge me the additional $12? I didn't realize at the time that you had a bundle...I guess I should have done more research before purchasing. :(

Thank you in advance for your speedy response.

Hi-

I have really enjoyed your products and have purchased quite a few- they have enriched my classroom and saved me a lot of time! Thank you!

I have a question- I just purchased 4 different A-Z books- they look great for our Montessori class. I watched your video of how to assemble the books (great idea to do a video). I was wondering if it is possible to slightly shift your pages so that one could assemble the book a little differently. The way it is designed now, it would take me hours to assemble the books, but if I can run double sided copies and fold one set all together and then staple with a long reach stapler, I could assemble the books very quickly.

If it's not possible, I understand; it might take a lot of work to shift your pages around!

Thanks,
Heidi Reed

Hi Jen! We love your fonts hello dotty and hello architect! :) We downloaded them for free from your blog a while ago and are wondering about if we can use them on our TPT products. We had previously taken a screenshot from your blog where someone had asked this and you responded:

"Yes, absolutely you may use my fonts in your TPT products, for sale or for free…just mention "[font name] font by Jen Jones @helloliteracy.blogspot.com…thanks!"

We are just wanting to clarify - is this not the case anymore? Are you asking people to buy a license now for any fonts of yours that are used on TPT products? We haven't used your fonts on our products yet because we wanted to clarify with you.

Thanks!! :)

Hi Literacy Ladies,
My fonts TOU changed on 10-31-12, when I created the commercial license. So the new terms of use supercedes the old terms of use. And 99% sure that my current terms of use is on the last page of the commercial font license preview but I'm at the gym so I can't check for 100% if it's on the last page of the preview or not. But yes you are correct but if you are going to use hello fonts and DPT products please purchase a commercial license and your good to go!

Hi Jen!
I just purchased this product and printed out the 3-12 posters. On poster #3 PHONICS, there may be 2 tiny errors.

The first is in the first sentence, "Reading and understanding the meaning of words parts". Should it be "word" parts instead?

The second is the last sentence where it says, "silent letters blends"...should it say "silent letter blends" instead?

Forgive me if I'm being too picky or if I am mistaken. Thanks so much!

My best suggestion is to make sure you are using the most current version of Adobe Reader. To make sure you are, Google "download latest version of Adobe Reader" and it should pop up for you. I made a comment on my review asking whether you could maybe add some more fractions to your HelloMath font. I would love if you added some like 1/2, 1/4, 3/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/8. Often when I am making math activities for my students I would love for them to see the fractions with the bar underneath the numerator (the way they are used to writing them), but still have them look cute :).

Jessika S. re: Vocabulary Posters, Word Cards & Student Sheets Aligned toText Talk Lessons
The Utah Text talk lessons seem like a great resource! I'm browsing the titles so that I can also double them as my read aloud (for comprehension strategies/skills). Quick Q, I normally choose 4 vocabulary words in our Tier 2 study for the week and use them throughout the week in journaling, discussions, etc. Is their a "science" to choosing only 3? I'm simply curious, as most basals (which I do not use) have around 5-8 words. Oh my!
July 4, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
Hello Literacy
Hello Literacy  (TpT Seller)
3 is the number chosen by Isabel Beck and Margaret McKeown, authors of Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction. The "text talk" structure of explictly teaching 3 Tier 2 words from a children's literature book using the 8-step process per word is THEIR structure and template. The Utah First teachers were following the text talk lesson template outlined in this book. Reading that book will shed more background light for you on "why 3." With that said, you can certainly have students note and record 6-8 words, or whatever number of Tier 2 words from the story, but explicitly teaching those 3 will take you approximately 20 minutes per title. If you get the book, and the first edition is like a penny on Amazon, and just as good, you can learn the template and follow it for the other words, or not...up to you.
Thanks,
Jen

I used this all last year with my 3rd grade RtII students and loved it. I am wondering if you would consider creating a set with graphics geared toward older students? Our building will go to 6th gr. this year. I would certainly be willing to purchase it as a new set.
For those ladies confused in the comments below, I watched the video a few times myself (thanks for that) then just jumped in and used it with the reading intervention programs we already use. The students were so motivated to color in a square and that was their only reward! We used "special" purple pencils and that motivated them as well.

Love this but wondering if you revise the first line of score 2 so that it reads like the rest: answers questions or tells opinion... Thanks!

Do you have the letters available without the border? I'm looking to use it more as a font.

If you just want the font for personal use, I can email it to you. If you are using it in a product you are selling, I sell a font license in my TpT store. :-)

Buyer re: Webb's Depth of Knowledge Common Core Classroom Posters
This looks like the Bloom's taxonomy signal strength posters I bought last year. Are they different?

Bloom's has 6 levels of cognitive thinking, Webb's has 4. Same design concept and signal strength analogy, but the philosophy of each are different. A school or district would most likely either follow Bloom's Taxonomy or Webb's Depth of Knowledge, but not both.

I am about to start working with a soon to be 4th grader that reads at a 1st grade level. I worked with him as his 3rd grade teacher and finally got him assessed for special ed. However, both his parents and I believe he may suffer from dyslexia. Do you have any tips or strategies that may help him and myself set him up for success?

Yes! If this student is anything like my daughter who is now in 8th grade, but read on the 2/3 reading level in 4th grade and who we had tested and qualified for Spec Ed in 3rd grade, then they know most everything (letters/sounds/sight words/blends, etc.) in isolation. 100% phonics instruction, and especially 1st grade level phonics, will not only hold him back but frustrate him. Spelling, in isolation, and out of context, will also be frustrating for the child. Also, my daughter had high vocabulary and language skills. My best advice is to spend most of your time on comprehension, reading short whole stories and short non-fiction texts with the child, spending most of your time on reading and writing about the ideas and presented, keeping a notebook of vocabulary, sketches and mental images from the text. Read.Read.Read.And.Write.Write.Write. The encoding processes of reading will naturally and automatically help the decoding processes. Don't the cognitive portion of his brain doing all isolated work.
Good luck!

Just wanted to thank you for the awesome fonts!

I had some difficulty downloading; but for MAC users; make sure to download the zip and place in a folder on the desktop, then click each font for it to load. Great work!

Hello, I just downloaded your sample Phonological Awareness story Too Many Toys. I wanted to see what your products look like. They look great and I really like you do them with picture books. I am concerned about this information, "Lessons are ideal for whole-class, small-group, or intervention for any Kindergarten or first grade student deficient in these phonological awareness skills. Research, however, shows that for students in second grade and above, that remediating in phonological awareness may not have the same benefit and may not be an effective intervention, sort of like the “too little too late” line of thinking."
Do you agree with this? I was planning to use these as small group lessons for my struggling readers. Do you think these will be helpful or not? I don't want to purchase from my own pocket mind you if it's "too late".

We did write that and that *is* what the research says. Language development is "ripe" in the brain at certain ages and stages of development and ages 4-7 is that age for phonological awareness since this "awareness" of auditory sound discrimination is a pre-reading skill, the studies conducted on older students past or beyond the pre-reading stages (like 4th graders reading on a K level), have not yielded great results, like the phonological awareness window of opportunity is closed. In addition, time spent intervening with 4th graders reading at a Kindergarten level, should be spend on phonics and fluency intervention and getting those kids reading and reading text that looks and sounds like 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade level text, they are 3-4 years closer to the real world, and you need to carefully decide how every minute of intervention instruction should be used. I would be lying if I said, "it can't hurt" because you would using 10-15 minutes of instruction just to see. In addition, you would also be doing some other interventions like phonics or vocabulary instruction, so IF you did a PA intervention as well, you wouldn't know which instructional variable worked or didn't work. If I were the interventionist, I would not spend my intervention minutes with those children that way, but if you email me, I willl email you a month's worth and you can decide for yourself without paying for a month, that should be enough time to decide if 20 days of PA intervention is yielding reading progress or not.
