Hi
This is Lisa from a previous question (see below). I bought the student personal dictionaries twice.

I would love for you to send me (as an "exchange") the Anecdotal Record for Informal Reading Assessment {Common Core Aligned} 1st Grade. I think that they are the same price.

thanks so much for your help! You have been awesome to work with!

HI there-

I was looking at the items that I purchased from you and realized that I bought the same thing twice (I bought the alphabet set and also the personal word dictionaries) without realizing that that the dictionaries are already in the alphabet set.

Do you ever offer exchanges?
If not, I understand. It's just a bummer and teaches me to look at what's included in the sets before I purchase. :)

thanks for great products! I love your knowledge and style.

I do. Because they aren't really reading sentences or connected text like paragraphs or passages, I think it would give them good practice in phrase reading and make them feel they were "doing it" like everybody else.

He is in 2nd grade and an ELL student. He is reading on a DRA D. We are working on short sounds and short patterns and single sounds, because some days he gets it and others not. We are also doing them as nonsense so that he will learn to apply what he is segmenting and apply it when reading unknown words. He is also having to transfer this into his writing as well. He has a reading disorder, but I am being asked to collect even more data with the private psych.

Ok. My RTI: Progress Monitoring pack, Set 1 has a Short Vowel CVC set of 25 probes in it. My Set 2 pack would also work for you too because there are CVCC and CCVC probes with short V. You may also consider my Phonics Sentences, there are sentences for fluency with all short vowels words in there if you saw him moving beyond reading words and wanted to move to sentences but not passages.

Hi Jen!! My group is on probe #13 of the CVC Fluency set. There is a discrepancy with line 4 between the teacher and student versions. Hi There!
I am currently subbing in a Long term position for 4th grade. I am trying to get back into a routine with the kids and I will be starting reading groups. I have been working with the other 4th grade teachers and they mentioned that at this point in the year 4th grade should mostly be focusing on reading informational texts from now until the end of school (aside from their DEAR time choices which are mostly fiction). I have grouped them by their Running Record levels and I am printing Informational Texts off of Reading A-Z to use with the groups. The site only comes with a couple comprehension pages and I want the students to get more out of reading it and improve comprehending these types of texts. Of course I need to follow the common core as we all do! So do you recommend any types of generic comprehension/graphic organizer pages I can use while reading with my groups? Thanks so much!
March 27, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
Hello Literacy
Hello Literacy  (TpT Seller)
Hi Jackie,
I have a set of Informational and Fiction graphic organizers to match each common core standard, but I would not recommend only providing instruction on nonfiction only from now to the end of the year. The 50/50 split expectation of the common core is intended to be across their day in all subject areas, not just reading time. When you say all students are reading mostly fiction in their independent reading baskets, and teachers are not providing guided reading instruction on fiction anymore, that tells me that all the students have mastered all the RL standards for the grade level already, is that true? If not, then guided instruction in the fiction standards as well, should not be overlooked. In real life and on end of grade tests, there will be a mix of both types of text.

Here is a link to my graphic organizers per common core standard:

Hi enjoy your approach and organization for Numeracy RTI - Do you have one for grades 4, 5 or 6?

I have ESL middle school students who need place value, rounding, comapring and ordering, fractions (model approach), etc... They are greatly lacking in the basics - but get insulted when I give them examples that look too "childish" (for lack of a better term).
Even though they need these numeracy skills. Thanks

Just purchased your Hashtag#fluency set. Looks like a wonderful, modern, highly engaging way to practice fluency. Great idea! I was wondering, though . . . what is the you expect your students to reach in order to record on the graphs? Do they record the # of words read correctly, or the # read in a given amount of time? Thanks so much.

Hi Ruthanne! My kids kept track of how many hashtags they knew in a set while learning the set. 1st column is a baseline, then a few days later after some practice, then once more before learning all 20. I expected them to set 20 as their goal. The bars would get increasingly higher with more exposure to each set of words in that set. When they reached 20, and they could read all the hashtags in that set, I would give them a certificate, my a C next to their name on the Class List sheet (for that set) and issue them the next set of words. Hope that helps! Jen

Hi! I just purchased the planet earth fluency cards and love them. My students did notice a couple typos-

On task card #13, mean should be means
On card #16, there should be a comma after ground water
On card # 18 there should be a comma after nature

#2 on the artifact sheet should be of instead of off
#11 has a comma that isn't needed
#13 on the sheet repeats the word study
#9 on the sheet last should be least

I bought and downloaded your borders bundle. But after extracting them only the scalloped will open it shows only 2 borders. What should I do? I really want to use some of them for a project I am doing for my students.
Thanks!

Hi! I can help you if you tell me which bundle you purchased (I could look it up on my Transaction Detail report if I knew your TpT username, but you only show as "Buyer"). I you email me both of those pieces of information, I can help you get this straightened out. No problem.
Thanks!

Hi Jen,
The pack looks fabulous. I realize that most of the printables will be self-explanatory, but I was wondering if there are short directions for how to use each organizer?

Hi Kathy...there are not. They are meant to compliment any reading skill and/or strategy instruction you are already providing. I do include ideas of content that lends well to certain standards and many of them could also be used to create an anchor chart. I am devoting my next 10 blog posts to each RIT standard, so following along there might help give you more direction.
Thanks,

Thank you for responding to my question. I purchased the number probes about 2 weeks ago and found several errors on probes 1-10 under ordering numbers 1-10 as well as the comparing numbers.

Thanks for looking into it. I like the probes and would like to continue using them.

Ok. I just looked through both Ordering Number 0-10 and Comparing Numbers 0-10. I did not find any errors in the Ordering Numbers set...there's only two numbers per box and the student has to pick the larger number, so I'm not sure how there could be any errors in that set unless I only put one number in the box or put two of the same number in the box.

Then for the Comparing Numbers 0-10 set, I found one error on Probe 6, so I fixed it.

I'm about to reupload the file. If you can be more specific about which probe the "errors" are on, I can fix them, but I looked at all 25 probes for each set and did not find more than one error.

Thanks,
Jen

Hello, I love your products! Please keep up the great work. My question is would you sell Picture A Day for grades K-2 only? I teach kdg and grade 1 only. Now that the PARCC test is around the corner, I want to get a jump start with the kiddos. Thanks!

Definitely!! Picture of the Day is ideal for K-2, as well as 2-6, 7, 8...the way it's done in Kindergarten at Lake Myra is whole group as part of Morning Meeting. The teacher puts the image up on the Smartboard and the teacher asks them guided questions like, "What do you see?" (observations....indisputable) and, "What do you think?" (inferences) like "What season do you think this is?" "What do you think happened right before this picture was taken?" "Why do think this ___ is sitting here?"...students discuss and say why they think what they think with evidence from the picture.

But, I will have you know that I am working on Picture of the Day Center right now, that will include 38 photos (one per week) WITH the observations and inferences already included that students must determine and sort. That should be out in a couple of weeks.

Thanks,
Jen

I just bought your Bloom's Posters and accidentally bought the UK set instead of the US set? Is there anything that can be done so I don't have to spend another $5? My mistake! :(

Buyer re: Vocabulary Posters, Word Cards & Student Sheets Aligned toText Talk Lessons
I took a look at the Utah text talk lessons, and love the idea of using them. I'm not very familiar with text talk lessons, so I hope you don't mind answering some questions for me. Do you do one text talk lesson a week? Do you only spend that one day/lesson discussing and working with the specific vocabulary words from the chosen book, or do students work with these words through out the week?

"Text talk lessons" is actually a term given by Isabel Beck and Margaret McKeown in their book, Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction. In their book, they outline the structure and protocols of delivering a text talk lesson. Personally, I do one text talk lesson (the reading of the book and the teaching of the words) all in one 30-45 minute sitting. But I've seen teachers break it into two, but I do not think this is ideal. Once you teach students the three target words from the book, they are to begin trying to work them into their oral vocabulary. We also have a silent signal in our room that if you recognize when someone else uses the word when speaking, you can wiggle your ear to let me know you heard one of our words being spoken. Long term effects also increase reading comprehension because the next time they come across that word in their reading, they will know what it means and be better able to understand both the word in context, and the meaning of the story.

Buyer re: Shades of Meaning: A Cooperative Vocabulary & Language Center {Common Core}
I would love to use this for my vocabulary center, but at my school, we are expected to use vocabulary words from our reading selection of the week at centers. How do you handle this in your classroom? Do you teach vocabulary words from stories/passages you use in the classroom on top of using these vocabulary words at your vocab station? I would love some ideas on how to incorporate this activity in the classroom while having to teach a separate list of vocabulary words from the text we are working with for the week. Thanks!

First of all, I must say, as a literacy specialist, your school's expectation of only teaching vocabulary words from your reading selection of the week, breaks my literacy heart.

Here's why. Vocabulary instruction is two fold. There are two kinds of vocabulary development: receptive vocabulary and expressive vocabulary. Receptive vocabulary is learning words from print and understanding their meaning when we read them/receive them...into our brain (words are coming in). Expressive vocabulary is being able to retrieve the right word from our brain to express our ideas when speaking, so that other people can understand our verbal messages...(the words are going out). Your school's expectation for vocabulary instruction is only focusing on receptive vocabulary, half of vocabulary instruction. Also, if you are only to use words on the book's page (or passage or whatever), you are also limiting a student's vocabulary development (or opportunity for vocabulary development) because author's are known for NOT using words to tell, but words to show, where readers must infer words that are not there based on a character's actions and feelings. In addition, one book usually limits that word from the book to a meaning of that word contextualized to that book. For example, if the book was about Jackie Robinson and baseball, and you were teaching them the term "fly ball" or "fly"...and you had to limit your instruction to just vocabulary words and phrases in that book, you would excluding the other 9 meanings of the word fly, that don't have anything to do with baseball.

In addition to exposing students to new words, synonyms for words, antonyms for words, shades of meaning of a word, figurative language, parts of speech and word morphology (prefixes, suffixes, and greek and latin roots), the Shades of Meaning Vocabulary Center, gives students another opportunity to increase their expressive vocabulary in addition to practicing higher level thinking like evaluating, debating, critiquing, and sorting, students also have the opportunity to use critical thinking skills around academic conversations following agreed upon Rules of Discussion. That's how it's done in my classroom, and every classroom at Lake Myra Elementary. In the Shades of Meaning packet, it explains how to incorporate this activity into your classroom, including a YouTube link to my students doing it.

I hope that helps!
Thanks,
Jen

I recently purchased your RTI: Fluency Sentences for Progress Monitoring Phonics Intervention probes and think they're fabulous! When I was using them today, I noticed that a student was making unusual errors on the R-controlled vowels probe #1, and realized that there are a number of inconsistencies between the student and teacher sentences. Would these be possible to correct when you have a moment? Thanks! :)

Yes. Definitely!...Awesome. :-)

TpT accepts POs for more than $20, I believe, and the pop-up comes at check-out when you select to purchase multiple licenses. OR you can tell me how many licenses you want and pay me directly through Paypal. OR I can send you an invoice, become a vendor in your district and then you can issue me a check and mail it to me...whatever is easiest for you and your principal.

Thank you...very much!
