My name is Holly Massman, author of Phono Phonics They Beg For! (also called Phono-Phonics Made Easy) I became a certified Phonics Instructor in 1995 for the Char-L Discover Intensive Phonics for Yourself program, and since then, I have been invited to many schools to teach workshops on how to teach phonics. Many teachers over the years have expressed that they never were taught this kind of material in college, so they felt very thankful to have the opportunity to learn how to teach phonics to their students. With this foundation, I was able to create my own program which came from the need to teach my high-functioning autistic child how to read. I have five children, four of whom understood dictation, marking of vowels, and everything else that goes with explicit (starting with the sound of the letter and building words) phonics instruction. One of my five children could not learn to read this way. Because of his autism, he was very natural at memorizing words, and this method of reading would have come easy to him. As a phonics instructor, I knew better than to allow him to get into the habit of memorizing whole words. What would happen when he came across a new word that he hadn’t seen before? The answer: I needed to create something with my knowledge of phonics that coincided with how my autistic son processed language. Yes, this is how Phono-Phonics They Beg For! was patented. The best thing about it: it worked! I knew I had to make it available for others, and now, eight years later, hundreds of students have experienced success in learning to read. I cannot put into words how fulfilling it is to see a struggling student start to understand how to read. A student I tutored once said to me, “I feel like a light just turned on. I know how Hellen Keller felt when she finally understood the signs for objects.†I will never forget that, and I am thankful to God for giving me the perseverance to create Phono-Phonics They Beg For! and make it available to you. The beauty of Phono is that is takes out anything extraneous in the reading process. It simplifies learning the letter sounds by eliminating pictures and letting the student simply focus on the letter itself. The name and sound of the letter(s) are heard while shown on the screen. The Phono game alone will teach your child/student how to read. In addition to this simplest form of phonics instruction, I have created the Phono Reading and Spelling Book, Phono Game Playing Cards and a printing practice worksheet. All of these products together make a complete phonics and spelling curriculum. I’ve priced it inexpensively enough to also be used as a supplement to what you may already be teaching. Phono has been used in private schools, public schools and home schools. It has also been used successfully for ESL students. Teachers enjoy the ease of this method, and the kids have a blast playing the game. Teachers can press “play†and correct papers while their students are learning their phonics! It doesn’t get easier than this!
