Good morning! I am a first grade teacher, formerly PK teacher. I just finished my masters in May (yea!) with a degree in Mind, Brain and Education – a subfield of education. The first program was started at Harvard by Howard Gardner and Kurt Fisher (if you haven’t read any of Kurt Fisher’s work on Skill Theory and you are interested in the cognitive processes involved in learning, you must read his work!)
Cut to the chase. When I moved up from PK to 1st I was shocked by my students’ lack of number sense. I spent an entire year and all last summer trying to figure out what was missing. In Nov I attended a workshop that on number sense. When I heard the presentation I recognized all the “big” names of the research I had been investigating. The workshop was a training session for an iPad app (Native Numbers). It seemed like a valid, robust app, but I am a skeptic and had to know: would this really work.
I am here to tell you that with the first skill set I saw every cognitive model of learning embedded in this app. I also realized that this app is more than a learning tool; it has built in formative and summative assessment as it is adaptive and levels up and down based on student performance and leads to mastery.
Now I am on a “mission” – everything we read tells us our students are lacking number sense. I believe this app is a fabulous tool to remediate those deficits. I have no vested interest in this app except that I am one of those people that has to solve problems and when I think I have found possible answers, I have to share that with others. Our kids are too important not to share---which is why I love reading blogs! I am asking for teachers to simply read the research and then try out the app and give me feedback---or give the feedback yourself to the developers. I am that convinced. I am not a salesman and I feel quite strange in this new role I have taken upon myself…but I have nothing to lose, or gain, except knowing that maybe we can have an enormous impact on our students!

You will need five bags for each student. Then, fold each bag in half, and stack the five bags on top of each other and staple twice on the left side. Hope this helps! :) Sorry for the late response. The pages are only offered in black and white in the unit. I used colored ink to show what it would look like after the students color in the pages. You can also use colored paper as well. That is what I chose to do with our books this year. It turned out great!

Hope, some of your photos show color ink for the last page, but my download is only black and white, except for the cover. Is there any chance of getting the color option for the last page ( 3rd grade at last) ? I thought it would look nicer to have the front and back covers both in color. I'm preparing the books now and look forward to doing this project.

Great idea. I showed the example using color ink because I didn't want to take the time to color it. When we created our books, I just let the students color everything in. I know a lot of people are struggling with the amount of ink everything uses and low ink in their schools, so I made it b/w for easier printing. I will try to add that into the unit. Sorry for the confusion! :)

The only thing that can be edited in the unit will be the student's names. Is that what you are having trouble with?

I bought my paper bags from the Dollar Tree. Then, I folded the paper bags in half. After that, I stacked five paper bags on top of one another and stapled on the left side. Hope this helps! If not, let me know! :)

This looks like a great set of projects for the end of school. I teach sixth grade language arts and social studies. I notice you have this rated for students up to fifth grade. Do you think I could adapt it to sixth grade? There was a page that seemed to be grade specific. I am wondering if that could be changed to sixth grade? I think it was a memory book page. In my experience there isn't a whole lot of difference between fifth and sixth graders so I think I can make it work. What do you think?

Hi! I absolutely love this!! I purchased it during the sale and I am slowly having parent volunteers assemble the bags and pages for me so it is ready for the last couple weeks of school. I purchased generic, standard sized lunch bags from Walmart and all of the pages in your pack are too big!!!! :( We are finding we have to trim them all down so they will fit in the "pockets" and so they won't hang over the edges when we glue them on the cover and pages. I don't think Walmart's brand of bags are any smaller than a brand name because I held them up when I was at the store. Sorry to bug you, but I am wondering if anyone else will run into this problem? We are totally going to make it work this year because they will be so darn cute when they are done!!! Thanks, Jaime

I purchased my bags from Dollar Tree and thought the same thing about all standard lunch bags being the same size. Our pages fit perfectly onto those bags. Again, I am very sorry. I will definitely compare to other size bags and give/add more specific details about bags in the unit! Thanks for being so sweet about your feedback!

I was busy as it downloaded and I gave the feed back so I could get it downloaded and printed right away. The problem: its 122 pages and only pages 1 and 2 work...the others are blank. :( Help!!! Thanks much :)

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
During my short teaching career, I have never stayed in one place too long! :) I've been teaching for six years - 4 years in 1st grade,1 year in 2nd, and have now moved on to 3rd grade just this year. Looping has presented many challenges, but I have enjoyed all of the wonderful experiences that this model of teaching can offer. I adore my job and am always looking for ways to improve my instruction in the classroom. I have quickly learned that when you make learning magical, that is when it truly sticks for the "long haul". I enjoy creating resources that bring learning to life in my classroom, and I am so excited to be able to offer a little piece of that to you here on TPT. Happy Teaching! :)
