I am extremely disappointed that after purchasing this unit I have to do so much work to it. There is NOT a student guide and a teacher's guide. The comprehension questions have the answers, as well as the true and false quizzes. I have to rework a lot of this material. I basically paid to not type the questions. For this price, the unit should have been ready to go. It requires too much additional work.

Considering that this is 80 pages of original work, I think that you received much more than "not to type the questions." There is a teacher and student's guide to many things, though not everything.

Overall the unit is solid. I was disappointed that some of the material that I purchased (Essay/Journal topics) was available on the authors site for free!! I was also disappointed that the "jeopardy game" was only written out and not an actual powerpoint that could be utilized without further preparation.

My students were really having a tough time understanding mood and tone. This powerpoint was a bit difficult for them because it is higher level and I teach 6th Grade. There are keys for the quizzes built into the study guide starting on pg 11 and 18. I do not have a typed answer key for the study guide questions but I do have a hand written key that I made when we read the book together as a class. Hi, I just checked the updated version and I did not find the answer key for the conflicts' page, the themes' page and the symbols' page. Is it in a different document? We read it together as a class. There is one part toward the end of the novel (When she is in the hot tub w/ a boy) that I have the students read alone. I do this because I think some students may feel uncomfortable. Other than that we read it together and talked about each "reason". I only had a class set so I'm sure it would be fine to have students read outside of class but they will probably finish the novel more quickly than youwant. The book actually did not take that long to read though. Throughout the reading students kept up with study guide. We would take days off from the novel for minilessons on other things.
I always send out a parent permission slip simply because there are some rather explicit sexual scenes and curse words. I did have one student who wasn't allowed to read it. We do have to talk about sensitive issues esp. suicide. I always preface the reading with a "lecture" telling students that we are all entitled to our own opinions but we need to consider other student's feelings...they may have dealt with things that others have not. We also talk about options Hannah had --suicide is never okay.

Yes-- I have used all the topics. I let the students pick whoever they want but I advise them on the ones that it is hard to find good information on. I usually bring in books that I get from the public library transit...there are sooo many books on unsolved mysterious and many books dedicated to just one USM...this is a lot of work though. Since it is hard to find good internet sources for some of the topics, I have thought about giving the students their topics 2-3 weeks before starting the process so that they have time to find books---they will probably have to turn to public libraries.

I bought the literature guide for 13 reasons why and I love it! I do have a few questions about certain activities. 1. The cryptogram: I don't know where to find the letters to match the numbers. 2. Is there an answer key for the literary elements, themes, symbols and the character chart?

The cryptogram answer is: stop the snowball ..I made on it on the teacher's discovery website and doesn't come with a "key" I think that students are supposed to be able to figure it out without a letter key. I always used it as an extra credit telling them that it went along a theme (and vocabulary word) from the novel.
Sorry, I have not made a key for the other charts, but if there are any you aren't sure on I can email a response quickly. Students never seemed to struggle with them so I never made a key for myself.

Hi Asa, I actually had the novel approved when the department sent a mast list to the the principal. I do not think he read it because later on when it became an issue with one teacher, he permitted me to keep readingit in class but made me send permission slips home. I read it with advanced sophomores. Not sure that I would read the novel with non advanced studets or upper classmen...simply because of the maturity leverl. However, most of my studetns said it was the best book they ever had to read ans some even said that it was one of the best they ever read. Almost all of the students thought it sent it great message and said it made them appriciate things more...hope that helped!

I typically choose different scenes everytime I use that first lesson. Sometimes I even use scenes from Family Guy and talk shows. Nearly every episode of Famly Guy and Simpsons contains satire. Latally, I have turned to Family Guy more often because the examples of satire, I think are much more obvious. I have picked out scenes where Faimily Guy satirzies how some of soceity is against homosexuality, different religions, I have found seens that satarize societies take on war. I wouldn't waste time trying to find the same scenes I used (I don't even know the names of them, sorry) but just watch a couple episodes and get some examples.
