Hi Jeannie!
I am looping to second and have purchased several of your centers and am busy putting them together to use next year. This comment doesn't mean to be critical at all, I am wondering if in the future, you could use a different font for the numbers. On this center the tens and hundreds don't line up very well. From a little first graders perspective, that could be hard to add. Thought I would just mention it. Again, I love what you create and am not trying to criticize, just want to offer a suggestion as I believe it will cause some of my students some confusion.gina

I absolutely LOVE these, but I have a question about use? Do you assign what the students read or is the reading self-selected? If it is self-selected, how do the students complete the poetry/drama/etc or even fiction/nonfiction homework if they are reading a different genre?
February 8, 2014 Report inappropriate comment
Jeannie Hunter
Jeannie Hunter  (TpT Seller)
It depends on what we are learning in class. If we are learning about poetry, I will provide something for them at home. Usually, I let them choose their own book. This would also work for centers or a self selected reading time at school. It is completely up to you how you could present these reading logs. I try to make sure that my students have books that would match the standards. Most reading logs could be completed without me providing them with something to read.

Thanks for answering my question. I am having some issues regarding homework. Last year, parents were completing the assignments. I have been given directives to grade the homework and post it in the gradebook. At least 10/34 were struggling readers. I don't know what to do about this situation.
Any suggestions?

Jeannie Hunter  (TpT Seller)
You can always contact the parents to discuss their homework. I had some parents help. As long as they were helping, that was fine with me. I would contact the parent if they were continuing to do the homework.

On Fridays, I take a group picture of all the students that completed their homework assignments. They also receive a little prize; my prize is a token that they save up to buy other things from the school store. I also put the picture on my school website. This seemed to help. Most of my students complete all of their homework.

Again, I don't grade their homework. It helps me see who needs extra support in what area.

Also, the majority of my students were struggling readers. We talked about how important reading was and how to be a better readers.

Every year is different (unless you're looping). Hopefully, this year will be different. Best of luck!

I assess homework for completion. I don't grade their homework. I have sent home the same story depending on what we were studying. I did this a lot with non-fiction. Most of the time they picked out a book for themselves. I look at their homework for completion each morning. If I noticed that someone struggled with a topic, I would make a note of that and add that as a focus during my guided reading time.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions.

I will try. I'm not as familiar with the 1st grade standards. But, I will take a look at them today. Thanks for stopping by! :-)

Have you used this with your students? How do they like it? I usually send home a book report along with a reading log. Many of my parents think I send too much homework home and don't want to overwhelm them. Thanks so much.

I tried this the last month of school. I only used a couple of the pages though. My students did fine with it. Some of them didn't like it because they had to think more about what they read. It was different than what I had given them originally, which was more of a "write a summary" type reading log. I only give homework Monday-Thursday nights. I did not have any parents complain about the reading log. I hope this helps!

Is there a way to make these Monday-Sunday instead of just Monday-Friday?

If you purchased the packet, I would not mind sending you a Monday-Sunday version.

I was wondering if you have any words such as favourite, colour (spelled the american way) that you would be willing to change to the British/Canadian spelling if I purchased the unit? Is there a way to eliminate the American hat from the unit?

I would be willing to send you a version if you purchased the unit. Just let me know what you would like changed and I can do that for you. My email is jhunter0724@gmail.com.

I would not be able to send you an updated version until Saturday because we are out of town for Spring Break. Let me know if that is okay.

Thanks!

Hi jeannie,
I like your blog. Congratulations on your son's first birthday! My boys are 23 and 21! How the time flies. So I want to make sure I am understanding your activity. You cut out the cards and place them in 12 different places around the room. Then the students basically go on a treasure hunt during an independent center time to match the graphic on their journal page to the graphic on the card and record the sight word/spelling word name. Then the cover is placed on top to then allow them to read and use the words for writing activities? Is this correct?

Time sure does fly! It really is hard to believe that he's 1. You are exactly right. There are a variety of ways that teachers use read and write the room activities. I cut the cards out and place them around the room. Students walk around and write down the words. The will match the graphic to the graphic on the cards around the room. My students keep their recording sheets in their writing journals for quick access. I print 2 two a page so there is only 1 sheet they are walking around with. You could also print/front and back. What you want them to do with their recording sheet is completely up to you. Thanks for asking. If you have any other questions please feel free to email me a jhunter0724@gmail.com.
