Hi Jen,
I love how easy you are making it to align RtII instruction to CCSS. I am interested in this product. My question is about the font used- I know "clean" fonts such as Verdana are often recommended as being easy on the eyes for developing/struggling readers. Did you do any action research or other research about using this font?
Thanks so much.

Jen Jones-Hello Literacy  (TpT Seller)
That is a fascinating question. I personally have not done action research on and what little research that has been done has been with very small test groups...not broad and generalizable to the sample population, struggling readers. BUT, I do know that fonts that are at least 14pts, san serif and easy recognizable are easier to read for dyslexic readers. With that said, most of my "handwritten" fonts fit this criteria. Good luck, and good question! Jen❤

Hi Jen,

I have recently discovered your fonts and resources as a new member of TPT. I have fallen in love with Hello Square Peg and have used it on a couple of resources for my own classroom. I am thinking about becoming a seller on TPT. I see you sell the commercial license for your fonts for $20. I am keen to buy the commercial licence for all the fonts if I do become a seller. I just want to put a couple of resources up first to see if they are in demand before investing in fonts/borders etc on a large scale. For now I was wondering if you would consider a fee for just the use of Hello Square Peg commercially?

Thanks,
Christina

Hi! Sorry for not responding sooner, I had my gallbladder removed yesterday. For third graders reading below grade level, you should pick up the pack for more advanced founational skills (Set 2) and mu fluency passages. All students can benefit from those to manage their own fluency progress. I hope that helps and feel free to contact me via email with additional questions. :-)

Hello! I bought your Rainbow Words sight word system. I spent the evening printing it out on card stock so that I could laminate it and have it ready to go for next year. I just wanted to let you know there is a mistake in the Ivory list when you print it. Instead of the word "boy", which should be at the beginning of the list, the word "put" is there instead, which is already on another list. I also bought your Rainbow Phrases and I'm looking forward to using that next year, too. I LOVE your products!

Hi Jen

I purchased the commercial license for your font bundle and love all the fun designs.
I got the fonts to upload just fine, but when I am using them in MS Publisher, Power Point or Word the letters look fuzzy (or like the lines aren't solid). When I enlarge the font to a 18 or larger, everything shows up normal, but when I try to use a size 10, 12, 14 etc... the letters are fuzzy/choppy.
Do you know what might be causing this, or how I might fix it. As you can imagine, I can't type everything in a size 18+ font :)
Thanks!

That is definitely not the way it should. Something isn't right, but I'm afraid it's on your end and not the fonts. Have you ever downloaded free fonts from www.dafont.com or a site like this? You should try because all font files are the same file types, .ttf files. I have never had anyone say this, and my free fonts on TpT have been downloaded over 100,000 times. Do you own any of Cara Carroll's fonts? any issues? We use the same font making program. How old or new is your version of MS Office? If none of this works, I would "submit a ticket" to TpT. Thanks for your purchase and good luck! Jen

praise1 re: Primary Rubric for Making Text Connections
My colleague and I have enjoyed following your blog and were very interested with your August 2012 entry concerning beginning of year screening. As we begin planning for next school year assessments with DIBELS Next and TRC (aka 3D Reading) , we would like to ask some questions and hopefully obtain some suggestions on how to implement your school’s style of gathering data from assessments.

Our school is K-5 and we have 6 teachers per grade-level with approximately 25-30 children in each class. Per the DIBELS Next trainer and our district personnel, we have allowed our teachers the freedom to perform the benchmarks and progress monitoring checks on their students all year. This nine weeks a team of three resource teachers conducted random fidelity checks. This was an overwhelming process but our principal liked the idea and would like for us to gather ideas on how others gather the 3D Reading data.

How many students did you complete in the two-day process?

Did you break up the assessments and have “stations” or did one teacher complete the whole assessment for each child before moving to the next?

Do your teachers perform their own benchmark assessments?

Thank you for your input. We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi!
First, let me just say that as we, too, move to mClass and DIBELS Next, next year, there will undoubtedly be some changes. Since we opened our school four years ago, we began by all teachers benchmarking their own class, and PM their own that needed it, ones that were getting RTI interventions. Then, as you read on my blog we began using a Benchmark team (over two days) to do the benchmarking for the teachers. (They kept on with PM for their RTI students). We used me, the math coach, the literacy coach, the RTI coach, Title 1 teachers, the AG (gifted) teacher and the ESL teacher...there are usually about 10 of us. The school psych helps if she's there. We get through a class of 25 students in about 15-20 minutes. Teachers bring their entire class to the Media Center, they bring a book to read quietly and we complete all benchmarks on one student and send them back to wait. So for example, for 1st grade, one benchmarker tested a student on PSF, NWF and the three R-CBM passages. I can email the two-day schedule if you want, it runs a lot like Picture Day. However, we think we are going to go back to asking teachers to benchmark their own students now that they "get it" and to have the teachers "own" the benchmark data. Good luck!

Hi: In your sample snapshot, it showed sheets with just cvce word, and sheets with just ccvc words. Then there was a sheet probe #25 for long vowel blends and digraph with a mix of many teams 'ea, oa, ai, ie, ay, ey, oo, aw, ew, oi, old'
Do you have sheets that test these separately, ea, oa, ai, ie, ay, ey, oo, aw, ew, oi, old, or are they always grouped together?
May 28, 2013 Report inappropriate comment
Jen Jones-Hello Literacy
Jen Jones-Hello Literacy  (TpT Seller)
I can make a set of 25 for words with vowel digraphs only. The reason I didn't was because the consonant blend chunks are more foundational than vowel digraphs so should already be a sound spelling pattern the student has shored up. However, if you just want to isolate the vowel digraphs, I would be happy to create them. I will let you know when they are uploaded.

Thanks, Jen. I've read it (http://www.heinemann.com/fountasandpinnell/pdfs/WhitePaperTextGrad.pdf) and I still believe that the rise in expectation is misguided, especially for our ever-expanding immigrant population and our poorest kids. NC has reduced, not expanded, preschool spots. Less than 1/8 of my incoming kinders have had the advantage of preschool. For NC to cut preschool and still demand that kinders attain Level D is preposterous.

Even Fountas and Pinnell say, "The Instructional Level Expectations for Reading chart is intended to provide general guidelines for grade level goals, which should be adjusted based on school/ district requirements and professional teacher judgement." Too bad NC didn't read that disclaimer. Or if they did, they didn't transmit that information to the districts.

It is also interesting to note that the folks at Lexile disagree, as apparently do the Common Core folks (not that I am endorsing the Common Core).

Thanks for the quick response and for the Reading Correlations Chart and other great products!

Anne Patrick re: Reading Levels Correlation Chart {Aligned to Common Core}
Jen,

Do you have any insight as to why we have to push our kinders to level D in NC if the Common Core doesn't suggest that? We are struggling to get our kids (many ESL kids especially) to this level.

Everything I found when researching the stretch bands says that kinders should not be forced to read until they are developmentally ready. Read-alouds, shared reading, etc are critical to aid that development, but when we test the kids we are tasked to show they can read level D texts.

The lexile people say that kinders should be BR level. HELP!

You'll want to read the most recent White Paper written by Fountas and Pinnell. It gives perspective on the D expectation for Kinders now, and in a nutshell, F&P beileve Kinders can reach a D by the end of the year...and I'm just paraphrasing the article. If you can't find it, leave me your email address and I'll mail it to you.

At our school, the K and 2nd grade team use the Beck & McKeown Text Talk lessons to guide their vocabulary instruction. All students have a vocabulary notebook where students track their own vocabulary word & phrase understanding (using a 4 point rubric) and their vocabulary learning growth. Students have to "teach" their parents a new vocabulary word every week. So, to answer your question, receptive vocabulary is assessed through running record comprehension and expressive vocabulary assessment is mainly formative.

Hi :). I was wondering, can this RTI Fluency Packet be used to track regular student fluency data? As in, can I use this to test my students every 20 days or so to see where they stand fluency wise and not rely on one assessment (DRA) to determine that?

Yes, definitely!!! Even students in Tier 1, without interventions, should be checked periodically and given feedback, for sure! 20 days is a great number, that's about once a month. The average rate of improvement (ROI) for fluency in grades 2-5 is about 1 word a week. So if a student is reading 70 wpm at the beginning of any month, they should be at, at least, 74 wpm to make "hit" the next universal screening benchmark target. Good luck! Jen❤

I also purchased your common core fiction packet. I would like to purchase the other half with at the discounted price, if possible. I didn't see these as a package when I purchased them. Please let me know.

ldhsallee re: Classroom Set of Labels: Library & Genre Labels, Word Wall Headers & Number Line
Hi Jen,
I purchased your beautiful labels for my classroom library makeover, and I realize now that the labels are much too big for what I was intending them for. Is there any possibility that they could be made smaller to fit on the end of a magazine file so that I could see each label when the magazine files (book boxes in my world) are all on the bookshelf?
Thanks so much,
Lindsay

I have already purchased your wonderful Common Core Fiction packet for $20.00. I would like to purchase the Nonfiction now that it is available. However, I see that it is available for $20 separately or as part of the bundle for $32. My question, is there a way to purchase the nonfiction packet for $12? TpT suggests I go ahead and purchase it for $20 and then with your permission, they will refund the $8. Would that be OK with you? If so, you would need to let TpT know you are OK with it. Thanks so much for your great products!

Renee Nealon re: Common Core Reading: Comprehension Strategy Sheets for K-2 Fiction Standards
Hi Jen,
I am a huge fan of your work published on Teacherspayteachers. Next year, I will be teaching second grade with common core and am exploring some options for intervention materials geared for the "strategic" learning (not the high or the bottom low.) Most of our students are second language learners. I will need decoding and fluency materials to support our intervention block that is easy to follow. What materials do you sell that might meet this need?

First of all, congratulations on your move! Anything in my store that says RTI could be used for students needing more phonics and fluency practice, used either as practice during the intervention intself or used to progress monitor the phonics or fluency intervention. So, the 60 Fluency Passages, the Foundational Literacy packs ($10 each) and I'm working on a 3rd set now. English language learners also struggle with phonological awareness due to lack of english language exposure so my Two Peas phonological awareness curriculum is just the repeated practice and exposure they need...that is for sale, either by the month or the months are bundled together in a product at www.hellotwopeasinapod.com. You may also want to check out the free resources available at www.fcrr.org under the link Student Center Activities.
Good luck!

The problem is I don't have a way to package one font at a time and Imm not going to create 113 single products. If you would consider paying me through Paypal instead, I could email you the ones you want. If you would consider that, figure out the one you want and let me know via an email to helloliteracy@gmail.com and I'll give you my Paypal email address. The single font commercial license price would be $5.00 per font.
Thanks,
Jen

Hello! I see the "Hello Fonts" commercial download for all of the fonts, but is it possible to get commercial usage of just 1 or 2 of your fonts, or no? I love all of them, by the way....just don't need all! Thanks.

Shouldn't it be "rhymes"?

Jen Jones-Hello Literacy  (TpT Seller)
No. Although rimes do rhyme with other words in the same word family. Monosyllabic words can be split into two parts - the onset and the rime - each of which are smaller than syllables, but larger than phonemes. The onset is the initial consonant sound like p- in pig or sp- in spot, and the rime is the vowel and the rest of the syllanle that follows like -ig and -ot in pig and black.

I noticed a couple of typos when I was using this with my students. Fluency Passage #47, line 82 should read ...they tell you what (to do) in the event of an... and line 96 should read After the plane has (reached) not has reaching. Also, Fluency Passage #38, line 61 should it not read Josh's favorite color is green and (he) loves apple pie? My students automatically keep inserting the word "he". Thank you for such a wonderful product...I love it and so do my RtI students! :)

Sure. The Bloom word font is Wish I Was Taller (www.kevinandamanda.com)

The "Blank Stuff" phrase is Hello Firstie (my font)

And the verbs are Hello Handprint (my font)

My fonts are free for personal and non-commercial use and available for download from my blog. For commercial use, you can purchase a Hello Fonts Commercial License in my TpT store.

Thanks!

You're sweet! When you say "listing" do you mean like a Credits and Acknowledgements Page? Like at the back of your product? Or on your blog? On your credits page, you would just insert that image with a hyperlink to the Hello Fonts Commercial license products page on TpT. Does that help? And thank you! ❤ Jen

Since they are .png images files, they work best in a desktop publishing program like Powerpoint or Publisher, where "layering" graphics works better. Since Word is more of a word processing program, you *can* add these images to a word page, but it's not as user-friendly and can be tricky to place it exactly where you want it.
