Hi Belinda,

I can't give you an editable copy because of the copyright restrictions on clip art, but I can update it to include metrics. Rather than posting it as part of the product, I'd rather just send it to you via email.

Thanks,
Jena

I am getting ready to use the cootie catchers and I noticed that 7 of the pages are missing the 4. It was not problem as I simply used a marker and then copied. I used a different color paper for each different catcher. Students will list the color of their catcher so they know which one they used and can pick a different one next time.

For my gifted students I used it as an excite activity before beginning genetics. Students are handed a bracelet as they walk in the door, then must locate their "specimen" based on the number bracelet they picked up. Then working together, they must determine which color bead on their bracelet corresponds to which trait on their "specimen." My students quickly figure out that the order of the beads must be the same for each of the bugs and then begin to problem solve which color corresponds to a specific characteristic. It took my gifted 8th graders 2-3 70min. periods to complete. When they thought they figured it out, they could check with me. The first person to "Crack the Code" wins a Nobel Peace Prize for their work. Then as students learn more, I refer back to it. But, you could use it when reinforcing the relationship with DNA and traits. This is really an extension activity since it is not a product to specifically teach the technical side genetics such as how to make Punnett squares or what phenotype and genotype are. After completing this, we studied Crick and Watson and began the technical side of learning about DNA. This summer I will also be adding to this unit paper copies of the "Code" so that teachers won't need to make beaded bracelets. I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any further questions.

I am having the same conflict as krobinson5. Forms such as 32.99 x 10^7 or 0.009 x 10^2 are the very problem types given in our text as non-examples of scientific notation. While I understand the benefit of students being asked to change these to correct SN form, I don't feel that works well in the puzzle format. I would very much like the file as a document. I am just starting my teaching career. I am interested in making some of my own items for my class. I am wondering about the graphics you use to make these items. Are they a software or something from a book. Is there a program to help learn how to make items/lessons/activities that I can make more specific to my State standards or district requirements. I have purchased some of your items and I love them-but being new to teaching with little income I need to be able to make some of my own things. Any help you can offer is very appreciated. Mary

Hi Mary!
My favorite graphic purchases have been made from kpm doodles and scrappin' doodles. There should be a link on every product I create using their work. Most downloads for graphics are between $3-$7 depending on how many graphics are in a set. Once you purchase the graphics they will send you a folder with the graphics and you just grab and drop them into your creations. I make my items in the Apple product Pages using a blank page. This gives me more freedom to add new pages where ever I choose. As far as the specifics, I know there is a section in TpT for help topics where you can ask questions to everyone. That may be helpful for you. Good Luck!!

Many who use CCSS are required to post objectives in the classroom in kid language. (Marzano is what our school district uses for teacher evals) And, many focus on academic vocabulary so the cards are from the objectives for word walls.

krobinson5 re: Math Fun Using Scientific Notation
While I really like the activities included in the packet and feel they would be useful in stations, I have always told my students that the coefficient (# before the power of ten) in scientific notation should be between 1 and 10. So, the fact that many of the numbers written in scientific notation (on the Cootie Catchers and Puzzles) include numbers less than one, this is bugging me, and I feel like I cannot give these problems to my students either at all or without some sort of explanation. Is this something that be changed? Or how are other teachers handling this? I did not notice it before I purchased it, otherwise I would have not spent the money.

Thank you for the suggestion, and I would be more than happy to send you the file as a document. When I have used this activity with my students in the past, students are to the stage where they must not only solve the scientific notation, but also put it in proper form. Please let me know where to send to document if that is what you are looking for.

Okay, so a player has 5 cards in his hand and draws one from the deck. Does he get to choose which of the 4 problems/answers on that card he gets to try to find a match to?
August 26, 2012 Report inappropriate comment
n/a
Jena Phillips  (TpT Seller)
Yes. As each player takes a turn, those waiting are studying what has been played and calculating whether or not they have a match or will need to draw. A draw counts as a turn. A player will only pick up a card if they have nothing to play. Sometimes a player will get rid of the cards without ever needing to draw, and he or she is declared the winner. Once the deck is depleted, however, it's a matter of who can get rid of their cards first. It can be played with 2 players, but in my experience it's better with 4.***New download is ready with answer key and 3 new puzzle games!!***
