I loved the idea of the cycles and having read aloud, partner and silent reading each day. I did have to redo some of the vocab because it didn't follow a pattern and confused some students. Also the 2nd cycle test had sentences for the vocab section that did not apply to tge words. Overall a pretty good product and worth the purchase!

It would have been more helpful to know which chapters to read to go along with each "cycle". I liked the responses, though difficult for my students to follow. The pages to be read for each day didn't match up with the chapters in our book.

Yes, different printings will have different page numbers... then I have a few kids who want to read on the Nook, so I have to write on the board every day not just page/chapter numbers (depending on the book we are reading), but also what beginning and ending sentence to search for! :-) If I have it I could send you the Word file, so that you can change the pages if you'd like. The published version on the cover is the only one that I have, though, so I'm not sure what the differences are myself!

Really disappointed! The questions are mostly factual recall. I would of thought that there would be more higher level questions. Also, there is not an answer sheet. I don't feel it is worth $5.

I'm sorry that you are disappointed, but I completely disagree with your comments. Although I used simplistic language in the questions throughout each cycle, they absolutely reach the highest level of Bloom's Taxonomy. Students who do not have background knowledge of the 19th century do need some discourse that involves summarizing and recall of events in the text, as this is how they will develop an understanding of the importance of Charlotte's actions throughout the story. As for an answer key, these are open ended questions and I have always felt that a teacher who reads the novel along with his/her students will sway their discussions and written responses with their own outcome in mind, better to leave the rubric and exemplars to the individual. If you need a key for the vocabulary, I'd be happy to send that to you, and if you'd like a refund TpT does have a process that you can follow.

The sentences on the Cycle 2 Test seem to make no sense with the words that we focused on. I even asked another teacher and she agreed that none of them fit. Are they the wrong ones?

Sorry to be asking so many questions, I just really like your product and I want to use it to its full potential. I also wondered how you took grades? I was thinking of just taking a grade on the Tests, but since you had already implemented all of this I was wondering what worked for you. It seems a lot to grade each day. Right now I have them writing their responses in their journals.
On days 1 and 3 for team discussion questions, am I understanding correctly that after they silent read they meet with a small group and talk about the quastions and then each student writes up a response? Or does each group write up on response? Then how do you pick which group shares since you said "then we share & critique one each day at the end of class?"
Again sorry so many questions...I just really like it! You should add a page that has all of this info on it and charge another dollar. It would totally be worth it!

Well, my reading class is an hour long, and here's my breakdown (would be nice if I could follow it to the minute, of course... here's my INTENDED breakdown!):
5 Minutes - Daily Reading Goal and Big Question introduction, preview of the day's questions with class
5 Minutes - Vocabulary introduction/review - good time for students to mention where they saw words in the text the day before (we mark with sticky notes)
20 Minutes - Reading: adjust who reads what pages based on your students, with more fluent readers I read less
25 Minutes - Days 1 & 3: Team Discussion and Vocabulary - they write up a response together as they discuss, then we share & critique one each day at the end of class. Days 2 & 4: Open Response & Vocabulary - done independently, often needs to be finished at home. *The day after we take our Cycle Test, each student chooses their best open response (from Day 2 or 4) and we do peer editing and scoring for that entire hour.*
5 Minutes - Reflection/Wrap Up - Never enough time, so anything we don't want to forget to discuss tomorrow we put on a sticky note and leave on the board.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Currently in my 10th year of teaching sixth grade in Lawrence, Massachusetts. My weekly teaching schedule includes science, reading, math, life skills (Advisory) and several after-school programs (one for higher achieving students, one for basic skills support).
MY TEACHING STYLE
I set high expectations for my students, and I spend a great deal of time trying to teach them the importance of setting personal goals in their effort and work. I also try to inject a lot of humor into my lessons, which keeps my students on their toes!
