Sorry to bother you. I just purchased your compound machine project, it looks great! I am wanting to be able to fill in the blanks and make a few minor changes (us Canadians and our metric system:)) but our school computers work with word. I'm not sure if this is possible but can you email me the word version of this project? Sorry again.

This may be a stupid question, but what do you mean by sort number?

In a lot of spelling/word work program, there are sorts and each sort has a number. Like in Words Their Way, there are different books (depending on level) and the books are divided into sort numbers. I hope this is helpful. :)

Hi Diana - Sorry I have not answered this question sooner. It did not appear in my e-mail. What day did you purchase the unit? I will look back as well. Perhaps I can send it to you via e-mail.

It should be on pages 32/33 of the download. I checked the product and it is showing up on my end. Let me know if you still can't find it.

Jen,

I just bought the owl pellet packet. However, I was hoping to find a bone sorting chart and reference page of bones within the packet. Do you have anything like that?

Thanks,
Melissa

Hi Melissa -
Thanks so much for your purchase. I don't include a bone sorting chart as I used ones that I didn't personally make. However, here is a link to a really good one that I have used before: http://www.nature-watch.com/images/Owl%20Pellet%20Bone%20Sorting%20Chart.pdf I printed this out and put it in the packet for each child.
I hope this is helpful! Let me know if you have any more questions!

Jen,
I have finished reading the unit and am very impresssed. This may be a lot to ask, but do you following a pacing guide for your curriculum, and if so can you share a copy with me? I am a teacher leader cohort in Greenville NC and I am trying to put together a bunch of yunits and lessons for new teachers next year and your stuff is AWESOME! You can email me at bobkat20837@aol.com, I am on facebook as Katharine Norris Stewart or here either way. Again, thanks a bunch! Kat

Hi! So glad you liked my unit. It took many years to compile all of those resources and materials! Definitely worth it, though. If I had a pacing guide for my curriculum, I would have been happy to share it with you. Unfortunately, I don't. :/ I actually do things differently every year so I am afraid that I am not much help. I do teach in units though and could provide you with a list of units that I teach. Let me know if that would be helpful! Thanks so much, again!
Jen :)

This looks great. Do you think it is adaptable for 3rd grade?

Yes! Definitely adaptable - many of the activities could be used on a third grade level! For the Peeling the Poem activity, I would switch out a few of the poems to be more 3rd grade friendly, but I would be happy to suggest substitutions!

This is a great idea! Do you use a word wall in conjunction with this? What I am getting at is where the students get the words to focus on for this. Thanks!

We use the book 240 Words All 5th Graders Need to Know (great book!) for our weekly vocab study. We also have words that are introduced in the content areas. When the students find words that they have learned from these areas, they put those on the Word Nerd templates. You could use this with your vocab program or with content words that you use in other subjects. Here is a blog post I wrote about it that might give you some additional information: http://www.jenmaschari.com/?p=214 I am so glad that you like the idea and hope that you can use it in your classroom. I hope that my response was helpful as well. :)

Thank you so much. As a first year teacher, I am so nervous about hitting the standards the way I should! I have looked at your preview and would definitely purchase if you added a meter page! Thank you so much! :) I appreciate your help and expertise! My colleagues are all as stressed about this as I am, so I will recommend your page to them, too!

I remember my first year fondly! I will have the meter activity added by Monday. Have a great weekend. :)

ETA - I have completed the meter activity and will be adding it to my unit tonight. I would be happy to e-mail you a preview of this page if you would like!

Does this unit include anything about meter? This is in the common core for 4th grade, and I can't find ANYTHING age appropriate! Thanks!

Hi!
Thanks so much for your question. I can understand your frustration - I don't remember truly learning about meter till high school, which I am sure is about the age range you are finding materials for. In this unit, the students learn the definition of meter (established rhythm of a poem, based on sounds and accents) but really are just introduced to it through reading poetry aloud and class discussion. Verse/stanza and rhythm are defined and looked at in the course of poetry mini-lessons. I would be willing to work on an activity this weekend that would teach this more explicitly and add it to the poetry unit by Monday. Even if you decided not to purchase the unit, I am sure that this addition would help other potential buyers looking for meter activities to align with Common Core.

I hope that my answer has been helpful. :) Let me know if you have any further questions.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

This is my 8th year of teaching. Six of these years have been teaching science and language arts. I spent seven years teaching 5th grade (which I loved!) Now, I am the junior high literacy teacher!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I am a very high energy, enthusiastic teacher who tries to incorporate technology and interactive lessons into my plans (and I occasionally dress up like a mad scientist!) I like a lot of hands-on activity and active discussion with my students. I love creating my own materials that are tailored to the standards that I teach.
