Sara Hoar  (TpT Seller) re: Number the Stars End of the Book Test
Hi, there are some typos/mistakes on the test:
1. The short-answer section should be number 11, 12, and 13; not 10,11,12
2. MC question 2, choice A--- the king KNEW Denmark; not new
3 MC question 9, choice D--- wasn't able to HIDE; not hid

Thanks!

Hi! I haven't used them for non-fiction since they focus on plot features (setting, character, etc.). However, a colleague adapted a few to work with her Current Science Magazine (questioning, vocabulary) and it worked well...you may just need to tweak a couple things to make them fit for you!

would love to introduce literature circles into my 7th and 8th grade classroom, but I have no idea how to even start. My classes are divided up between the high, medium, and low students. I think my each of my groups would benefit from this type of activity. Any suggestions on where to start? My high and medium classes are getting ready to start "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins, while my low group will be reading "Al Capone Does My Shirts". I'd appreciate any advice! Thanks! :)

Hi!
Great book choices! My recommendation would be to start small. When I first introduced lit. circles, I began with everyone having the same job so they could share their perspectives and everyone could learn from each other. It also provided for me a quick assessment of reading strategies for each student. After I felt confident they understood each "job", I assigned them different jobs. For 7th/8th, especially a higher-level group, I would imagine they would be ready to move into the different jobs sooner and may just need an introduction to the jobs themselves. The other element of lit. circles that I did for my higher level groups (and eventually everyone) was move them into “book club” type groups by the end of the year where they didn’t actually have a set job but had to come to their group with something to contribute and could draw from their past experience with the jobs to help them create their contribution.
If you send me your email address, I’d be happy to email you some things that were helpful for me. I think you’re really going to love working with your kids in lit. circles. It’s great to see them grow in their conversations and they like it too!
Thanks!

Does this include the template for the puzzle also...how many pieces if so?

Jenny  (TpT Seller)
There isn't a template because class sizes vary so much...I usually just do a rough sketch of a puzzle on mini poster board and cut it out.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

This is my ninth year teaching, although I don't know where the time has gone! I've taught in both 4th and 5th grade self-contained classrooms in private, Catholic schools, but have worked as a student teacher in public schools, too. In addition, I've worked as a tutor for students ages 5-17 in both language arts and math. I also have taught fifth grade Catholic Faith Formation. I love teaching and can't imagine myself in any other profession!

MY TEACHING STYLE

While I create my lessons around state standards, I always think to myself when forming a lesson, "will the kids enjoy this?" While I'm not naive and realize that learning can't be fun ALL the time, I do aim to create a learning atmosphere that is engaging and interesting for the students to learn by using multiple teaching strategies to reach and teach each learner. I do this with a lot of games to reinforce concepts, humor in the SMART board lessons I create and post-it notes next to my bed when I have a brainstorm at 3am. My students are 10 and 11, so they are more than happy to provide constant and immediate feedback for both lessons they've enjoyed and those that need to go in the Mrs. F. archives of lessons which bombed. I love what I do and try to transfer that energy to my teaching because if I don't enjoy doing what I do, they kids won't enjoy learning what I teach!

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

After volunteering as a teacher at my church for Sunday School when I was a teenager, I fell in love with teaching and went on to earn a BA in Elementary Education from University of Portland. A couple years ago, I earned my Masters in Education Curriculum and Instruction from Seattle University. Concurrently I received my Professional Certification for the state of Washington. While I'm taking a break from degrees right now, it is definitely not the end of the road for me and I enjoy taking at least one online class a year for professional development.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I always think anything I may put here will sound cheesy, but I will try! I'm married to a great guy who patiently accepts my passion for teaching...even when I'm on a break from school. We have no kids of our own yet but I joke that it's due to my dedication to the 31 "kids" I'm already taking care of. My husband is a student himself going back for another bachelor's degree full time and we look forward to a day when life is a little less hectic...I guess that's when when we'll know it's time to start having kids of our own!
