Buyer re: 150 Art Warm Ups
Jewels, I noticed on the first two slides in the preview you mentioned arbitrary color and asked why the artist might have used it. I was wondering about the use of the word arbitrary because I wasn't sure that the artist used the color arbitrarily... could you help me understand what you mean? And the second slide where you show a Marc Franz picture you asked why Matisse used arbitrary color...

The word arbitrary is in the California State Standards. What I meant by that is that it is an arbitrary (not realistic) color chosen by the artist in lieu of a realistic color. One of the definitions of arbitrary is "subject to individual will or judgement". In the CA standards they define arbitrary as colors selected and used without reference to those found in reality. Hope that helps.

Hello Jewels ~
I am the Northern California middle school rep. for the California Art Education Association. Are you a member? I want to say that today is the first time I have perused the TeachersPayTeachers site and every lesson I click on that I can tell is what I have taught or have designed or that I like is yours! I like your style and I think what you have going is something very special. I also have a strong graphic arts background and I can tell that yours shines through in way your visual lessons are presented.

I also teach middle school visual arts and am the VAPA chair. at Bridges Academy (formerly JWFair) in the Franklin McKinley School District (K-8). My principal lives in Merced and commutes to SJ each day. He is a strong supporter of the arts as well as our Superintendent.

Kudos! I like your work! Keep it coming!
And, I hope you are a CAEA member...and if not, become one and become a presenter at our annual conference!
Please contact me if you'd like. My info is below.

Cheers!

Hi Gini, Believe it or not I just checked my Q&A. My notifications were going to spam. I was a member of CAEA but am not currently. I just took an Associate Principal position at Golden Valley High School. I am still a big proponent of art and graphic arts. I have also done quite a bit of lesson writing for CTE online for their online resources for lesson plans and units in the digital arts field in the last year. If you ever need anything let me know. I am sorry I didn't get your message until now. You can reach me at jrivard@muhsd.org.

No, but most of the questions are open ended...and meant more for discussion. Such as what is the main element of art in a piece...there could be several answers to this depending on how the student justifies their answer.

This is the first time I have used a product from this site and I'm having a little trouble! In the Picasso lesson I purchased, you refer to:Handout – Texture – Middle School Art
Handout – Shape – Middle School Art
Handout – Texture Hand Worksheet and also Input - which appears to be a couple of streaming videos. I'm at a loss as to where to get these elements for the lesson! Sorry to bug you with my inexperience!

Buyer re: Pop Art PowerPoint and Art Project
Would you allow me to put my state standards in place of yours? I don't have Photoshop, we use Mac computers. Any suggestions on how to do the gridding? Does the grading rubric come with this?
February 13, 2011 Report inappropriate comment
Jewels
Jewels  (TpT Seller)
Yes, of course you could put your own standards in it. If you don't have Photoshop, you could just print out the pictures so that their size is 6" x 9" and then have the students grid the picture themselves every 1.5". This would be equivalent to the large picture. Another technique would be to print the grid on transparency paper and just have the student's overlay the grid onto the picture. You could make the grid in Microsoft Word. Also, I have uploaded the lesson that has the grading rubric and also a note-taking form in it if you would like to get that also. If you only need the grading rubric I can email it to you. You can see the lesson at:

Hi Jim,

I have reuploaded previews that include all of the pages for the following items:

Principles of Design
One Point Perspective PowerPoint
Two Point Perspective PowerPoint
Elements of Art - Space PPT (this is an introductory ppt I use before I go into linear perspective)

You should be able to download the free previews to see all of the pages. If you still can't send me your email and I will email the attachments to you. I can do attachments on the TeacherPay website.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jim,

I have uploaded new previews for the perspective PowerPoints, so you should be able to download the previews to see all of the pages.

I use three PowerPoints when I teach perspective. The first one I use is the Elements of Art - Space PPT which is an introductory PPT on how artists show space in their artwork. It talks about atmospheric perspective and linear perspective. I then use the One-Point Perspective PPT and then the Two-Point perspective PPT.

Hope this helps. If you are still unable to see all of the pages let me know and I will email them to you.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

As long as I can remember I have been a creative person. Beginning early on I was always involved in arts and crafts projects at home and in school. At the age of 13 I began more formal training taking varying classes in illustration, commercial art and crafts. At the age of 16 I began on the job training in commercial art. I continued my education at California State University Long Beach receiving a Bachelors Degree in Art. After receiving my Art degree I went to work for an Advertising agency. I began as a graphic designer and worked my way up to an Art Director. After working in an advertising agency for more than 15 years I decided I wanted to do something more worthwhile. I had a teacher who really a positive role model in high school. I began volunteering in her graphic design class working with the students on projects. After volunteering for two years I decided I wanted to go back to school to get my teaching credential. After I received my , I began teaching in middle school. I have taught 6th, 7th and 8th grade Language Arts, Social Studies and Read 180. I have also taught 7th and 8th grade art. After teaching at middle school I moved on to teaching art at the high school level. I teach all levels of art including Art 1, Art 2, Art 3, Art 4, AP, Computer Graphics and Yearbook. I hope to be a good influence and inspiration to my students.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I just went through training in Explicit Direct Instruction and I really like it. I have been using the direct instruction methods plus many more. I am a fairly easy going teacher. I love my students and want them all to feel that I am interested in them. I also have a strict set of rules they must follow with a set of consequences if they misbehave. Because they are treated fairly in my room, when they get in trouble they understand that the consequences.
