jlbeasley417 re: Homework Packet for First Grade: Write & Share (Common Core aligned)
Hi! I downloaded your packet, and love it! However some of my pages printed out with big black boxes covering part of them. :/ It is not showing these boxes on the PDF file on my computers, but it happens when I print them. Any advice?

Wow, I don't know what to tell you. No one has reported having any problems with printing this file. Did you try downloading it again? Maybe the first download got corrupted. I could email it to you if redownloading it doesn't work. Please let me know. Thanks

Do you have this for 2nd grade? I love this idea! I hated traditional "sharing" (who has the most expensive toys?)! I work in a low-income school.

As of right now we don't but we have been talking about possibly expanding it. This product came about for the very reason you stated. Kylene worked at a low- income school and saw a need for this. Thank you so much for your interest.

Thank you thank you sooooo much! We are loving what you did with Little Red Hen. Could you add a white apron to the one where she is standing with both wings spread open? We would so appreciate it! Thanks for being willing to take on this task. This is how the Little Red Hen should look..just like she did in the books we grew up with! Thanks again! We are excited to create our singable using this set. We already have the tune and lyrics written...we were just waiting for the right little "chick" to come alive and now she has! Thanks again! Thanks for being so friendly, Kylene. You rock. Is there no way to have a simple conversation on TPT without writing on a question page? Should I just write you on your website? Sorry, clumsy newbie here! btw My better half is a sound engineer/speaker designer person. He'd be glad to assist you with any MP3 questions you ever have--just email us. He's a wiz at all that.

Hi there! We're newbies at TPT and have been looking for other teachers who use music with students. We love to sing too! Just wanted to say hello -- what you do seems very wonderful. Also wondering if there's a place here where all music teachers say hello on a thread? Can't seem to find one. Seems like it might be a friendly thing to do...Maybe create a music teacher's TPT pinterest page we can share? Or are we just over-eager newbies haha with too many ideas? Either way, hello there! Love your philosophy.

Hello,
Fantastic to meet another song writer. Love your store.
Yes, we do need to do something to gather us together. What is the question?
You have some great ideas about where to begin.
We are trying to learn how to get Mp3 Audio Files up at TPT. This is our winter goal.
Your songs are very inspiring as well as your mission.
Take care,
Kylene

Can you tell me what common core standards are covered in this file?

Since it is primarily focused on Writing & Speaking, the CCS are mostly in Writing & Listening and Speaking areas:
Examples:
W1.2 Write information/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.
W1.5 With guidance and support from adults, focus on a topic, respond to questions and suggestions from peers.
W1.8 With guidance and support from adults, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

SL1.1 Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
*Follow agreed-upon rules for discussion (e.g listening to others with care, speaking one at a time aout the topics and texts under discussion)
*Build on others’ talk in conversations by responding to the comments of others through multiple exchanges
*ask questions to clear up any confusion about the topics and texts under discussion
SL 1.3 Ask and answer questions about what a speaker says in order to gather additional information or clarify something that is not understood.

Hope that answers your question! :)

Hi!
This is such an interesting question. Jackie and I will talk about it. Right now our current and future products are geared for the primary grades. This certainly gives us something to think about since shared reading is important at that grade level, too.
Thank you for your question.

spepps re: Reading Strategies Chart for School & Home
Can you add a poster that says: cover up an ending and look for the word????
I've started you cards already, and realized that strategy was missing.

Hi
I thought about your question a lot. I use the strategy of "chunk it out" to teach my students to "cover up the ending" since I teach them that "ing, ed, est" etc. are "chunks" they know....I don't like to have too many stategies to refer to so that is how I approach it. 6 is a good number to teach. We sing the Dr. Jean song "Tools of Good Readers" and the ones we made the free chart and cards for are those same ones. Hope that clears up why we did what we did! Jackie :)

I'm very interested in this product. Out of curiosity, what other homework activities do you supplement it with? I'm looking for ideas, as copies in our school are incredibly limited this year.

I usually send home my week's homework packet on Friday. Along with asking parents to read with their child each day, I send home a weekly book bag with a sheet on outside where I list the name of books and their numbers. I numbered all my readers that I use for this. Easy & quick when one gets them back to switch out for new ones! You can give higher numbers to more difficult little readers. Then just exchange between same level until a child needs a harder level. But I always pick books that they will be successful with at home since this is practice. Sometimes inside the baggie that holds the books I put a paper (1/2 sheet). They would be asked to do something to extend one book. ex. Draw favorite part. Later, I will add more writing extensions/questions. On this half sheet --on the other side I have general questions for a parent to ask after reading a book. I explain that not all books need all these questions. As the year progresses I change out those discussion questions to other skill related questions.) Also, I send home a math practice worksheet. If you are short on paper maybe the math could go on the back side of the Write & Share. Later, I send a file folder game boards home. They are open-ended so that I can rotate the file folder games. I provide the list of words and/or math facts that the parents will use with the game. We have a free Halloween game posted now. It has the directions for the game. I use different looking kinds of file folder game boards but really all are played same way. (You know, if the CLIPART is different well...the children think that it is a different game --even if it is played the same identical way!!! Once the games are made in the file folders & laminated, they last for years.
I hope these ideas help you. It is hard writing all the details. Please do
write back if I can be of further help. Thank you for your questions. Also, thank you for buying Write & Share.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

WE LOVE to sing! We create SINGABLES that connect Early Literacy learning with singable text. ALL our singables are sung to familar tunes like "Ity Bitsy Spider", "Mary Had a Little Lamb", Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" etc.. Our students remember more and enjoy learning through music. Jackie has been teaching for 36 years and still LOVES it! She has been a Special Education teacher, taught Grades 1, 3 & 4 and is now in Kindergarten- her favorite grade! She was a mentor teacher and an Early Literacy coach. Kylene has taught for 33 years and was a Early Childhood teacher, Reading Specialist, a multi-age and 1st grade teacher before becoming an elementary principal. She was also an Early Literacy coach. Their collaboration started as first grade teachers when they discovered they both loved creating children's songs and curriculum activities for literacy and math! Together they have taught at the university level for Teacher extension classes in Early Literacy. They have presented many times at Reading and Kindergarten conferences and workshops.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Student-based learning with a focus on balanced literacy and hand-on math with a smile and a SONG! Lively activities incorporate all learning styles & get our little ones learning. We love to involve parents in supporting their children so we get them into our classrooms!

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Both have been Teachers of the Year at their schools. Both have been involved in leadership in their district and helped win the California Distinquished School Award for each of their school sites!

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

Jackie graduated with her B.A. from Western Michigan University & Master's degrees in Special Education from Oakland University (MI) before heading out to California to continue her teaching career. Kylene graduated with her B.A. from Humboldt State and her M.A. from Chapman University. Both have taken numerous workshops that have helped build their deep understanding of balanced literacy!

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Both Jackie and Kylene share a love of family and animals! Jackie has 2 spoiled mini Schnauzers, Gracie and Noddi! Kylene has a dog named Breia, lots of cats, and a pasture full of llamas....oh, and a hard-working hubbie named George! Both love to read while Jackie is an avid quilter and Kylene loves to garden!
