I do have simple machines lessons and a full unit for sale. The unit is combine with energy and merges the relationship with machines and their mechanical energy a bit. There are a few hands on activities with some of the simple machines. The most fun thing to do would be Rube Goldberg machines, but this can take a lot of effort and needs a lot of supplies. Perhaps students could bring things in if you give done examples. Best of luck, J

Which Apple programs are you referring to? Most of the MS Office programs are Mac versions, but will open on any relatively recent PC versions of MS Office. So unless you have a very old version, this should not be a problem. If you are referring to the .notebook files, you need SMARTboard's Notebook software, as specified in the listing. Go to smarttech.com to download, or express.smarttech.com to use the browser version of Notebook.

For the YouTube issue, I recommend downloading the "Easy YouTube Downloader" plugin for Firefox browser (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/easy-youtube-video-downl-10137/). This will allow you to download YouTube videos so you can watch them without using YouTube.com.

I just purchased and downloaded your unit. There are some errors. I have not had a chance to look at every document yet but this is what I found so far. Your Atmosphere 2 homework assignment is about clouds. Your Clouds 2 activity has no instructions so I really have no idea what the activity is about. I may have more but as I stated I have not had an opportunity to look at every thing yet.

Atmosphere 2 is not about clouds. It is about the atmosphere foldable activity. You must look at the Presentation file for help with the Clouds 2 activity. Perhaps your file did not download properly. But I think you are jumping to conclusions. Plus you just bought an entire unit, rated highly by others, for $12. I think you are being a bit picky.

The reason for question two is because I went to smarttech.com and the software is not free as you state. You can download and use it for 30 days as a trial period but then you have to pay for it. If this is what I need to use your material, after 30 days I wouldn't be able to access it.

1. I am note exactly sure what you are referring to in terms of answer keys. Presentations usually cover the answers to the questions posed. There are no homework or test answer keys, but there are answers in the Jeopardy review, that would cover most of these questions.

What standards do these activities hit? I teach in North Carolina, 6th grade. We follow the NC Essential Standards at this moment for science. I'm trying to figure out how much of my curriculum this would cover. These are the standards I'm trying to hit.

This unit definitely focuses on the overarching concept of energy flow. There are lots of different activities that relate to this aspect. You can see a list of each lesson that is included in the description of the unit. There is also a link to these individual concepts so you can see, in greater detail, what is included.
However, my approach here was more towards the interactions between living things; life interacting with life. I covered photosynthesis in the unit prior to this. It is definitely discussed and reinforced that the sun is the key to all energy flow, but there is not a specific lesson on photosynthesis in this unit.
Additionally, I cover the effects of abiotic factors in the following unit, Biomes & Adaptations/Evolution. 6.L.2.3 would not be covered much here, but would be one of the main focus points of this unit.

The best way is to use Firefox browser and download the Easy YouTube Downloader add-on (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/easy-youtube-video-downl-10137/). After having this, a "Download" button will show up under all YouTube videos. Make sure do select a version that shows a film strip icon next to it.

No, nothing missing! But, not those files don't open. they are the same three Word documents that you have in the zip file, but they have a ._ in the beginning. So basically, there are 6 Word documents in the zip folder... maybe they are ghost files! Everything else is fine--thanks!

You can "quickly" convert if you have a PC and Notebook software downloaded (get it for free at smarttech.com), you Export as PowerPoint. However, when you do this, font formatting does not transfer (so you have to re-size and re-color fonts) and pictures show up 100% transparent (so you have to format to 0% transparency)...seriously annoying. If you have a Mac, there is no such export option (fail). What I normally have to do is copy and paste each text box and picture individually, and I still lose text formatting when doing this! I will try to do this tonight and let you know when the file is ready.

Hi thanks for looking and for the compliment! This really depends on what lessons you need and how quickly you need them. It is not a quick process to convert to PPT. I pretty much have to copy and paste every text box and every photo one by one, and then resize and recolor the text because the formatting doesn't transfer. Give me a list, in order of when you need it and I can try. Are you sure the tech coordinator at your school won't install Notebook if you ask and explain why you'd like it? Best, J.

Nope sorry, but it's pretty straightforward. Just make the band around the person's head, the turkey neck and head, and feathers for the back. Then staple the pieces together. Maybe draw it out on white paper and make photocopies on colored paper if you want young students to cut them out.

As far as the conversion of presentations, I did not mention that on the full unit listings. It is mentioned on the individual lesson listings. It would be quite a lot of work to transfer 16+ lessons because it is a tedious process. If you have the Notebook software, you can open the files and do it yourself. There are a couple options. If you are on a PC, you can click File -> Export -> PowerPoint. However, there are usually issues that occur like pictures showing up 100% transparent (you have to adjust each one to make it display) or text changing size and color. I am on a PC and what I usually do is copy and paste every individual piece of information from Notebook to PPT. Again, you will lose font size and color, and have to re-adjust it. If you copy and paste multiple items at once, or an entire slide, it will copy, but it will put everything in one image and then you can't edit text.
