I have 18+ years public school teacher in New York as a first grade, then second grade teacher. I am also the collaborative teacher with much experience in special education. Earlier in my career, I was taught severely handicapped children in Missouri. I have worked on numerous curriculum committees throughout my career which included work writing curriculum and training teachers.
My approach to teaching is to make it FUN in a safe, accepting environment! If students are engaged and comfortable, they want to learn, and learning takes place. Expectations are high and students strive to achieve. With a background teaching severely handicapped (where individualized instruction was a must), differentiation has always been a strength and natural part of my teaching.
My rewards come daily in the form of smiles, notes, comments, and acknowledgement from students, co-teachers, parents, and administrators that I'm doing a great job. The brightest moments and highest honor -- when former students come back to visit or write to tell me the difference that I made in their lives!
